Banksia oblongifolia

Fern-leaved Banksia

Taken while bushwalking along the Rainforest Walk at Depot Beach. This short walk meanders into precious remnants of littoral and temperate rainforest. It is a window into a world that existed 50 million years ago when rainforest covered much of eastern Australia. Littoral rainforests are usually contained in sheltered gullies such as the creek-line at Depot Beach. Few stands of littoral rainforest remain today; for this reason this type of rainforest is listed as an endangered ecological community in NSW.

I don't have much to say about this photo... it's just an arrangement of fern fronds... nothing more... nothing less.

Fern fronds turning rusty coloured with the start of autumn.

photo ID #9953- Shenandoah June 2016

A small part of the edge of the forest that hosts the Terblans Nature Walk was destroyed in last year's fire.

But fortunately indigenous forests don't burn very easily, since they're usually too wet to burn. There is almost no dry tinder lying around on the forest floor... everything is always damp and decomposing.

I realise that every time I look for somewhere to sit down and rest for a few minutes while I'm walking one of these trails. I usually can't find a single log or rock that is dry enough to sit on without getting my bum wet. And nobody likes a wet bum! :)

So here the fire only managed to penetrate the forest for about 10-20 metres before going out. It still did considerable damage though, not a single large tree in that 10-20 metre strip along the forest edge is still alive. :(

But that doesn't mean that it can't be revived. I was amazed to see how high the grasses, legumes and fynbos have grown after just one year... and I was very relieved to notice the return of several species of ferns.

Fern leaves are mostly shades of green. The leaves of this species (I don't know which species) sometimes (I don't know why) turn a lovely orangey-shade-of-red.

Brightly coloured and backlit like this... they always tend to catch my eye. :)

Have a lekker weekend everyone!

These ferns are growing high on a maple tree trunk, naturally backlit by the sun. I underexposed quite a bit so the background would be dark.
