"I was sitting in the classroom

Trying to look intelligent

In case the teacher looked at me

She was long and she was lean

She's a middle-aged dream

And that lady means the whole world to me

It's a natural achievement

Conquering my homework

With her image pounding in my brain

She's an inspiration

For my graduation

And she helps to keep the classroom sane

Oh teacher I need you like a little child

You got something in you to drive a schoolboy wild

You give me education in the lovesick blues

Help me get straight come out and say

Teacher I, teacher I, teacher I, Teacher I need you..."

"I'm coming back to Tombstone with the sun behind my back

I'm tired of people talking of things that I lack

Ever since a year ago, the day she passed away

I've been taking too much notice of the things they've had to say

And all they say is you ain't half the woman she used to be

She had strength and she worked all her life to feed her family

Oh it's hard and I can't see what they want me to do Lord,

They seem to think I should step into mother's shoes..."

"I've pulled down my lace and the chintz

Oh, do you know you have the face of a genius?

I'll send your love to Zeus

Oh, by the time you read this, I'll be well in touch

You and me on the bobbing knee

Didn't we cry at that old mythology he'd read?

I will come home again, but not until

The sun and the moon meet on yon hill

I'm giving it all in a moment or two

I'm giving it all in a moment for you

I'm giving it all, giving it, giving it, giving it

This kicking here inside makes me leave you behind

No more under the quilt to keep you warm

Your sister, I was born

You must lose me like an arrow shot into the killer storm

I've pulled down my lace and the chintz

Oh, do you know you have the face of a genius?

I'll send your love to Zeus

Oh, by the time you read this..."

The women of the Crusades are the women who excelled in their roles during the Crusades. The role of women in the Crusades is often considered limited to domestic or illicit activities. While this is true to a certain extent, they also played an important role in activities such as armed combat in battles in the Holy Land and participated in the fighting.

Hadvide, daughter of Arnold I of Chiny, accompanied her husband Dodo de Cons, a confidant of Geoffrey of Bouillon. Both Hadvide and Dodo returned from the Crusade unharmed. (wikipedia)

"Now that she's back in the atmosphere

With drops of Jupiter in her hair

Hey, hey, hey

She acts like summer and walks like rain

Reminds me that there's a time to change

Hey, hey, hey, hey

Since the return of her stay on the moon

She listens like spring and she talks like June

Hey, hey, hey, hey

Hey, hey, hey, hey

But tell me, did you sail across the sun?

Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded

And that heaven is overrated?

Tell me, did you fall for a shooting star–

One without a permanent scar?

And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there?

Now that she's back from that soul vacation

Tracing her way through the constellation

Hey, hey, hey (mm)

She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo

Reminds me that there's room to grow

Hey, hey, hey (yeah)

Now that she's back in the atmosphere

I'm afraid that she might think of me as plain ol' Jane

Told a story about a man who was too afraid to fly so he never did land

But tell me, did the wind sweep you off your feet?

Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day

And head back to the Milky Way?

And tell me, did Venus blow your mind?

Was it everything you wanted to find?

And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there?

Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken

Your best friend always sticking up for you even when I know you're wrong?

Can you imagine no first dance, freeze-dried romance, five-hour phone conversation

The best soy latte that you ever had and me?

But tell me, did the wind sweep you off your feet?

Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day

And head back toward the Milky Way?

And tell me, did you sail across the sun?

Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded

And that heaven is overrated?

And tell me, did you fall for a shooting star

One without a permanent scar?

And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself?

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na

And did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day?

Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na

And did you fall for a shooting star, fall for a shooting star?

Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na

And now you're lonely looking for yourself out there..."

Legio IX Hispana aka "9th Hispanian Legion" was a legion of the Imperial Roman army that existed from the 1st century BC until at least AD 120. The legion fought in various provinces of the late Roman Republic and early Roman Empire. The nickname "Hispana" was gained when it was stationed in Hispania (Spain) under Emperor Augustus. It was stationed in Britain following the Roman invasion in AD 43. The legion disappears from surviving Roman records after c.AD 120 and there is no specific account of what happened to it.

The unknown fate of the legion has been the subject of considerable research and speculation. One theory was that the legion was wiped out in action in northern Britain soon after AD 108, the date of the latest datable inscription of the Ninth found in Britain, perhaps during a rising of northern tribes against Roman rule. This view was popularized by the 1954 novel The Eagle of the Ninth in which the legion is said to have marched into Caledonia (modern-day Scotland), after which it was "never heard of again.

The few survivors of this great surprise attack probably mingled with or intermarried with the native population... (wikipedia)

A mix of watercolours, ecoline ink and coloured pencils on Steinbach paper.

Caledonia is a Latin name for women. It means "of Scotland," the Latin name the Romans gave to an area in modern-day Scotland north of their province of Britannia. This, therefore, lay beyond the borders of the Roman Empire. It is unlikely that the borders were fixed until the construction of Hadrian's Wall. Today, the name is primarily used as a romantic or poetic name for Scotland as a whole. (wikipedia)

"I don't know if you can see

The changes that have come over me

In these last few days I've been afraid

That I might drift away

I've been telling old stories, singing songs

That makes me think about where I've come from

That's the reason why I seem

So far away today

Let me tell you that I love you

That I think about you all the time

Caledonia, you're calling me, now I'm going home

But if I should become a stranger

Know that it would make me more than sad

Caledonia's been everything I've ever had...."

"Where were you when I was burned and broken?

While the days slipped by from my window watching

And where were you when I was hurt and I was helpless?

Because the things you say and the things you do surround me

While you were hanging yourself on someone else's words

Dying to believe in what you heard

I was staring straight into the shining sun

Lost in thought and lost in time

While the seeds of life and the seeds of change were planted

Outside, the rain fell dark and slow

While I pondered on this dangerous but irresistible pastime

I took a heavenly ride through our silence

I knew the moment had arrived

For killing the past and coming back to life

I took a heavenly ride through our silence

I knew the waiting had begun

And headed straight... into the shining sun..."

"On waves of love my heart is breaking

And stranger still, my self control I can't rely on anymore

New tide, surprise, my world is changing

Within this frame an ocean swells behind the smile, I know it well

Beneath a lover's moon I'm waiting

I am the pilot of the storm, adrift in pleasure I may drown

I built this ship, it is my making

And furthermore, my self control I can't rely on anymore

I know why

I know why

Crazy on a ship of fools

Crazy on a ship of fools

Turn this boat around, back to my loving ground...."

"He always found it hard to take her

She wouldn't listen to advice

And though he never tried to make her

She often thought it would be nice

Oh, and now she's heading out to California

It's been a long time coming

But she's feeling like a woman tonight

And she left a little letter

Said she's gonna make a stop in Nevada

Goodbye. Goodbye

She tried for years to be a good wife

It never quite got off the ground

And all those stories of the good life

Convinced her not to hang around

Oh, and now she's heading out to California

And she doesn't know what's coming

But she sure knows what she's leaving behind

And she left a little letter

Said she's gonna make a stop in Nevada

Goodbye. Goodbye

And though she finds it hard to leave him

She knows it would be worse to stay

He wouldn't understand the reasons

That make a woman run away

Oh, and now she's heading out to California

With some money in her pocket

She's a rocket on the Fourth of July

And she left a little letter

Said she's gonna make a stop in Nevada

Goodbye. Goodbye..."

"Every day in the morning on her way to the office

You can see as she catches a train

Just a face among a million faces

Just another woman with no name

Not the girl you'd remember but she's still something special

If you knew her I am sure you'd agree

'Cause I know she's got a little secret

Friday evening she turns out to be...

Nina, pretty ballerina

Now she is the queen of the dancing floor

This is the moment she's waited for

Just like Cinderella

(just like Cinderella)

Nina, pretty ballerina

Who would ever think she could be this way

This is the part that she likes to play

But she knows the fun would go away

If she would play it every day

So she's back every morning to her work at the office

And another week to live in a dream

And another row of early mornings

In an almost never-ending stream

Doesn't talk very often, kind of shy and uncertain

Everybody seems to think she's a bore

But they wouldn't know her little secret

What her Friday night would have in store..."

"Oh I've hurt enough

For the both of us

Since we said our goodbyes

And I've cried and cried

Until I've cried

The blue right out of my eyes

If you hear a beat

Look down at your feet

For that's where my heart lies

I should run and hide

Because I've cried

The blue right out of my eyes

Now my eyes are gray

The blues are washed away

From tears I've cried for you

I need you desperately

Baby honestly

I love you, you know that I do

Come on back again

Don't say it's the end

Or don't you realize

Since you've left my side

Darlin' I've cried

The blue right out of my eyes..."

She stood next to me and said

What do you think of this painting?

I looked at her, this was suspicious

I never expected this question

There was Picasso, Mondriaan and Vermeer

Expensive things, intense atmosphere

Striking colours, immense splendor

Her shuffling was suspicious

What is art?

What is art?

That look in her eyes, that is art

What is art?

What is art?

The robbery of the century is so close

Police on your heels, look at me!

I am the hero of half the country

This boy has burned boring art

The most expensive collection of the century

The guide tells me again and again and I yawn

Next to me is a beautiful statue

A prize is for the thief who steals her

"WAT IS KUNST (WHAT IS ART)" - Noordkaap, 1993 (translated)

"...she's still blonde

but a sad twitch about her mouth

proved that she had endured much suffering

she hadn't applied any makeup

as if it no longer made sense

now that you had gone out of her life..."

SHOOT DOWN THE MOON

Oh no I don't want it

You can take it all

I'll put my money where my mouth is

Put your suitcase in the hall

Oh you robbed me blind

Or what little hope remains

You put a gun to my head

A bullet through my brain

You can't shoot down the moon

Some things never change

We can build a bridge between us

But the empty space remains

Just as long as you're around

We live on borrowed time

I'll put my money where my mouth is

You're guilty at the scene of the crime

I never say more than I need

The mystery runs deep

The dangers buried below

The secrets that you keep...

I'm a light world away

From the people who make me stay

Sitting on the bad side of the moon

There ain't no need for watchdogs here

To justify our ways

We live our life in manacles

Exiled here from other worlds

When she dealt the cards, I bet my heart.

Now I just found a game that I can't play,

And this is where the cowboy rides away.

And my heart is sinking like the setting sun,

Setting on the things I wish I'd done.

It's time to say goodbye to yesterday.

This is where the cowboy rides away.

We've been in and out of love and in-between.

And now we play the final showdown scene.

Get yourself out go along with the crowd

You're all dressed-up got nowhere to go

You feel left out 'cause nobody showed

Listen babe

When you think you're the only one

Who can't find love in this world

Tell yourself there's another one

Who's waiting for you, somewhere

Somebody special is thinking of you

Somebody special is dreaming of you

Somebody special is longing for you

Somebody special, special

Magazine dreams are easy stuff

But heaven knows they ain't good enough

Picture yourself from reel to reel

And get your hands on that driving wheel

And you know what

When it's hard to satisfy

A simple simple fantasy

Somebody somewhere is on your side

Waiting for you, crying

Maybe your heart's tormenting you

Why should it have any reason to

Wipe off that negativity

Put on some positivity

When I was feelin' near as faded as my jeans

Bobby thumbed a diesel down, just before it rained

That rode us all the way in to New Orleans

I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana

I was playin' soft while Bobby sang the blues, yeah

Windshield wipers slappin' time, I was holdin' Bobby's hand in mine

We sang every song that driver knew

Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose

Nothin', don't mean nothin', honey, if it ain't free, no no

Yeah, feelin' good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues

You know feelin' good was good enough for me

Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee

From the Kentucky coal mine to the California sun

Yeah, Bobby shared the secrets of my soul

Through all kinds of weather, through everything we done

Yeah, Bobby baby kept me from the cold

One day up near Salinas, Lord, I let him slip away

He's lookin' for that home, and I hope he finds it

But I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday

To be holdin' Bobby's body next to mine

Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose

Nothin', and that's all that Bobby left me

Well feelin' good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues

When Christopher Columbus reached the American continent in 1492, he thought he had reached India. When he saw the natives of the region and met with them, he thought he was meeting with people of India, who were called Indians.

So he decided to call the Native Americans as Indians. He soon realized his mistake and found out that he wasn’t in India but on a new continent. However, the name ‘Indians’ stuck and it has been used to refer to the Native Americans to this day. (wikipedia)

"Well you should see Polythene Pam

She's so good-looking but she looks like a man

Well you should see her in drag dressed in her polythene bag

Yes you should see Polythene Pam

Yeah yeah yeah

Get a dose of her in jackboots and kilt

She's killer-diller when she's dressed to the hilt

She's the kind of a girl that makes the "News of the World"

Yes you could say she was attractively built

Yeah yeah yeah..."

"The words I have to say

May well be simple but they're true

Until you give your love

There's nothing more that we can do

Love is the opening door

Love is what we came here for

No one could offer you more

Do you know what I mean

Have your eyes really seen..."

And my heart's gonna lead me through so many ways,

And if you're join me I'll be your guide,

Baby, 'never say never', be my 'runaway bride' ..."

"Listen to my song,

And if you wanna sing along,

It's about where I belong:

Texas.

Sometimes far into the night,

And until the morning light,

I pray with all my might,

To be in Texas.

It's where I wanna be.

The only place for me.

Where my spirit can be free:

Texas..."

"In a little village near the Spanish border

Lives Maria, the girl I left behind

She is just that kind of woman

That in dreams I'd always keep in mind

She looks pretty and I won't forget her

I'm sure there's no-one else for me to find

Long black hair with eyes like burning fire in the

night

I remember how we danced under the silvery moon

While the Spanish guitars play that night our lover's

tune

I remember how we kissed under the silvery moon

Girl, I never realized how I would miss her soon

In a little Spanish town down by the border

Lives a Spanish rose I always keep in mind..."

"... Are you unhappy, perhaps you're in pain?

Then think about the sun and sing this song

Oh, let the sun into your heart

She shines for everyone, after all

Enjoy life

For it lasts for just one moment

Oh, let the sun into your heart

She shines for everyone, after all

Enjoy life

For it lasts for just one moment...."

"I sit and wait

Does an angel contemplate my fate?

And do they know the places where we go

When we're grey and old?

'Cause I've been told

That salvation lets their wings unfold

So when I'm lying in my bed

Thoughts running through my head

And I feel that love is dead

I'm lovin' angels instead

And through it all

She offers me protection

A lot of love and affection

Whether I'm right or wrong

And down the waterfall

Wherever it may take me

I know that life won't break me

When I come to call

She won't forsake me

I'm lovin' angels instead..."

The umpteenth +2 in the 'Just Like Belgium' series...

Waffles are eaten a lot at fairs in Belgium, especially the Liège waffles. These are eaten warm.

Popular in tearooms are the Brussels waffles, with a generous dollop of whipped cream, or with jam or sugar (possibly with butter). It is customary to drink a hot drink with them, especially chocolate milk or coffee. There are also softer waffles, which can be eaten warm or cold.

"Remember Belgium and the Brussels Museum

Where we piled on the front steps like stray cavaliers

Our code of living meant little to others

The few francs we saved bought some cheap souvenirs

But the red lights where the catfights make it just like Belgium

See us face down on the floor of another cheap barroom

Streetwalkers sweet talk you out of your spare change

And your sweet madam makes it seem just like Belgium

Just like a hustler when they look attractive

It's nothing more than a slap on the back

The price tag of being just a little bit different

The first rule to learn is to keep your own distance..."

In 1981, traveling in Thailand, I met this girl on the train to Myanmar (Burma). We talked for a while and she said she was traveling to her family in Kanchanaburi at the River Kwai. I never saw her again.
