"Early one morning the sun was shining
I was laying in bed
Wondering if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red
Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like mama's homemade dress
Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough
And I was standing on the side of the road
Rain falling on my shoes
Heading out for the East Coast
Lord knows I've paid some dues
Getting through
Tangled up in blue.
She was married when we first met
Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam I guess
But I used a little too much force
We drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out West
Split up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best
She turned around to look at me
As I was walking away
I heard her say over my shoulder
"We'll meet again someday
on the avenue"
Tangled up in blue.
I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the ax just fell
So I drifted down to New Orleans
so I lucky was to be employed
Working for a while on a fishing boat
Right outside of Delacroix
But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind
And I just grew
Tangled up in blue.
She was working in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer
I just kept looking at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear
And later on when the crowd thinned out
I was just about to do the same
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me, "Don't I know your name?"
I muttered something underneath my breath
She studied the lines on my face
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces
Of my shoe
Tangled up in blue.
She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe
"I thought you'd never say hello," she said,
"You look like the silent type."
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burning coal
Pouring off of every page
Like it was written in my soul
From me to you
Tangled up in blue
I lived with them on Montague street
In a basement down the stairs
There was music in the cafés at night
And revolution in the air
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside
And when it finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keeping on
Like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue.
So now I'm going back again
I got to get to her somehow
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter's wives
Don't know how it all got started
I don't know what they do with their lives
But me I'm still on the road
A-heading for another joint
We always did feel the same
We just saw it from a different point
Of view
Tangled up in blue...."

"Oh, what a night
Late December, back in '63
What a very special time for me
As I remember, what a night
Oh, what a night
You know, I didn't even know her name
But I was never gonna be the same
What a lady, what a night
(Oh, what a night)
Hypnotizing, mesmerizin' me
She was everything I dreamed she'd be
Sweet surrender, what a night
And I felt a rush
Like a rolling bolt of thunder
Spinning my head around
And takin' my body under
(Oh, what a night)
Oh, I got a funny feeling
When she walked in the room
And my, as I recall
It ended much too soon
(Oh, what a night)
Why'd it take so long to see the light?
Seemed so wrong, but now it seems so right
What a lady, what a night...."

I'm giving it all in a moment or two
I'm giving it all in a moment for you

The Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) is a very rare subspecies of tiger. The Siberian tiger is also known as the Amur tiger, Korean tiger, Manchurian tiger, North China tiger, or Ussuri tiger, depending on its location. Research has shown that the Siberian tiger is genetically almost identical to the Caspian tiger, which became extinct in 1970. It is the largest of the felines. (Wikipedia)

I love hearing the stories that they tell
They've seen places beyond my land and they've found new horizons
They speak strangely but I understand
And I dream I'm an eagle
And I dream I can spread my wings
Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly
Over mountains and forests and seas
And to go anywhere that I please..."

"One day you'll look to see I've gone
For tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun
Some day you'll know I was the one
But tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun
And now the time has come
And so my love I must go
And though I lose a friend
In the end you will know, oooh
One day you'll find that I have gone
But tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun
Yea, tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun

Craftsmanship, at its core, is the demonstrated ability to manipulate materials and techniques to achieve a specific artistic vision. This manipulation is not arbitrary; it is determined by a deep understanding of materials science, physics, and the inherent limitations and possibilities within a given medium.
The earliest artifacts in which prehistoric humans may have been able to express themselves artistically and that are generally accepted as art date back to the Upper Paleolithic. This includes the famous cave paintings of Grotte Chauvet, Altamira, Pech Merle, Nerja, and the Lascaux Caves (Wikipedia).
A drawing of an (unknown to me) woman in colored pencil by my father Desiré Vermeulen (1935-2022), the local artist of Werchter.

"And I think of you now
As a dream that I had long ago
In a kingdom lost in time
In a forest of evening
The archer is bending a bow
And I see you bring him bread and wine
Down the legions of years
The invaders have taken this land
And bent you to their will
And the memories fade of the ancients
And all that they had
Though the magic lingers round you still
Oh, who would walk the stony roads
of Merlin's time?
And keep the watch along the borderline
And who would hear the legends passed
in song and rhyme?
Upon the shepherd pipes of Merlin's time...."

Avalon, in this saga, is a place "hidden in the mists," accessible only to those who can summon the magical boat and find the island. According to the saga, this is the island where King Arthur rests after his wound by Mordred at the Battle of Camlann, having been brought there by his half-sister Morgan le Fay or three other priestesses. According to some legends, he rests there until he awakens again to save England. According to the same legend, Avalon is the island where Excalibur was once forged. (wikipedia)

A shieldmaiden was an independent, usually unmarried woman "who belongs to herself" and who has chosen to live as a warrior. They are frequently mentioned in Scandinavian mythology, in sagas such as the Hervarar saga and the Gesta Danorum.
According to the Nordisk familjebok, shieldmaidens also appear in the stories of other Germanic peoples: the Goths, the Cimbri, and the Marcomanni.
Examples of shieldmaidens from the sagas include Brünnhilde in the Volsunga saga, Hervor in the Hervarar saga, Brünnhilde from the Bósa saga and Herrauds, the Swedish princess Thornbjörg in Hrólfs saga Gautrekssonar, and Hed, Visna, and Veborg in the Gesta Danorum. (Wikipedia)

"You're not a ship to carry my life
You are nailed to my love in many lonely nights
I've strayed from the cottages and found myself here
For I need your love your love protects my fears
And I wonder sometimes and I know I'm unkind
But I need you to turn to when I act so blind
And I need you to turn to when I lose control
You're my guardian angel who keeps out the cold
Did you paint your smile on, well I said I knew
That my reason for living was for loving you
We're related in feeling but you're high above
You're pure and you're gentle with the grace of a dove..."

"Last night, a little dancer a-came dancin' to my door
Last night, a little angel came pumpin' on my floor
She said, "A-come, baby, you got a license for love
And if it expires, pray help from above"
Because
She don't like slavery, she won't sit and beg
But when I'm tired and lonely, she sees me to bed
A-what set you free and brought you to me, babe?
What set you free? I need you here by me
Because
In the midnight hour, she cried more, more, more
With a rebel yell, she cried more, more, more, wow
In the midnight hour, babe, more, more, more
With a rebel yell, more, more, more
A-he lives in a-his own heaven
Collects it to go from the 7-Eleven
Well, he's out all night to collect a fare
A-just so long, just so long it don't mess up his hair
Whoa, ah
I walked the world for you, babe
A thousand miles with you
I dried your tears of pain, babe
A million times for you
I'd sell my soul for you, babe
For money to burn for you
I'd give you all and have none, babe
Just to, just to, just to, a-just to, to have you here by me
Because
In the midnight hour, she cried more, more, more
With a rebel yell, she cried more, more, more, wow
In the midnight hour, babe, more, more, more

Saw a young gun slinger with something to prove
And i came looking... Like anybody else
I came searching...Like anybody else
Looking for that golden calf
And i came shooting for the stars, like any young blood
I found a fat cat city and crooked judge
I killed anything standing in my path
I killed anything till i laid my hands

This is the last dance for this kind of man

BLUE MOVES was Elton John's first studio album that I bought in 1976 in a record store in Mechelen. All songs on this double album have been a source of inspiration for later drawings and so on over the years, such as this...
IF THERE'S A GOD IN HEAVEN (WHAT'S HE WAITING FOR)
“Torn from their families
Mothers go hungry
To feed their children
But children go hungry
There's so many big men
They're out making millions
When poverty's profits
Just blame the children
If there's a God in heaven
What's he waiting for
If He can't hear the children
Then he must see the war
But it seems to me
That he leads his lambs
To the slaughter house
And not the promised land
Dying for causes
They don't understand
We've been taking their futures
Right out of their hands
They need the handouts
To hold back the tears
There's so much crying
But so few that hear
If there's a God in heaven
Well, what's he waiting for
If there's a God in heaven
What's he waiting for? for..."

"Did I see you down
In a young girl's town
With your mother in so much pain?
I was almost there
At the top of the stairs
With her screaming in the rain
Did she wake you up to tell you that
It was only a change of plan?
Dream up, dream up
Let me fill your cup
With the promise of a man
Did I see you walking with the boys?
Though it was not hand-in-hand
And was some black face in a lonely place
When you could understand?
Did she wake you up to tell you that
It was only a change of plan?
Dream up, dream up
Let me fill your cup
With the promise of a man
Will I see you give more than I can take?
Will I only harvest some?
As the days fly past
Will we lose our grasp
Or fuse it in the sun?
Did she wake you up to tell you that
It was only a change of plan?
Dream up, dream up
Let me fill your cup
With the promise of a man..."

Sparks fly from her fingertips
Echoed voices in the night
She's a restless spirit on an endless flight
Woo hoo witchy woman,
See how high she flies
Woo hoo witchy woman
She got the moon in her eye
She held me spellbound in the night
Dancing shadows and firelight
Crazy laughter in another room
And she drove herself to madness with a silver spoon
Woo hoo witchy woman
See how high she flies
Woo hoo witchy woman
She got the moon in her eye
Well, I know you want a lover,
Let me tell you, brother,
She's been sleeping in the Devil's bed.
And there's some rumors going round
Someone's underground
She can rock you in the nighttime
'Til your skin turns red

Lay my soul to rest
Where my life was free and easy

Take me back to Chicago
Where music was all I had
I tried to be good as I could
And sometimes that made me sad
Take me back to Chicago

Why don't you take me back?
Take me back, take me back
To Chicago
I still dream of the lake of peacefulness
The warm summer breeze
'Cause my life was so much simpler then

Take me back to Chicago
'Cause hustling's not my style

I wish I could be a child

About the things sent to make you move
You can't help it, there's no one in the world

"Remember Belgium and the Brussels Museum
Where we piled on the front steps like stray cavaliers
Our code of living meant little to others
The few francs we saved bought some cheap souvenirs
But the red lights where the catfights make it just like Belgium
See us face down on the floor of another cheap barroom
Streetwalkers sweet talk you out of your spare change
And your sweet madam makes it seem just like Belgium
Just like a hustler when they look attractive

"The flea sits on the eagle
The lion is on the floor
And over there
There's the bear
Ready and a willing for a kicking in the door
Welcome to the universe
Take your partner for the biggest show in town
Welcome to the universe
Better hurry 'cause there isn't too much time
Before the stars fall down
Welcome to the universe
Welcome to the universe
Take your partner for the biggest show in town
Welcome to the universe
Better hurry 'cause there isn't too much time
To see the stars fall down
And the sun going out
And the world catch fire
And the mountains shaking all about
Welcome - everyone
Welcome - watch the fun
Welcome to the universe...."

Inspired by reading the compelling book "A Flame of Tasmanian Tigers" by Belgian author Charlotte Van den Broeck. How do you track down what's disappearing before our very eyes?

"...
I see you standing on the other side
I don't know how the river got so wide
I loved you baby, way back when
And all the bridges are burning that we might have crossed
But I feel so close to everything that we lost
We'll never, we'll never have to lose it again
Now I bid you farewell, I don't know when I'll be back
They're moving us tomorrow to that tower down the track
But you'll be hearing from me baby, long after I'm gone
I'll be speaking to you sweetly from a window
In the Tower of Song..."

"I see you tempt the night
I see you take a bite
You can tell me you were home
But the camera never lies
You walk out in disguise
To pull the wool over my eyes
You play me for a fool
To believe your alibis
And you can count on being safe as houses
Underestimate my eyes
But you can't argue with the image
The camera never lies
There's no distance put between us
Safe enough for you to hide
I'm watching all of your secrets
The camera never lies
I recommend first prize
For acting so surprised
For acting like you love me
The camera never lies
I'll take my wounded pride
I'll take it on the chin
Your profile fills the frame
How good you look on film
Smoke screens and sweet deceiving
Replace the face of trust
The shutter falls each time you meet him
A negative becomes my plus..."

"I was sitting in the classroom
Trying to look intelligent
In case the teacher looked at me
She was long and she was lean
She's a middle-aged dream
And that lady means the whole world to me
It's a natural achievement
Conquering my homework
With her image pounding in my brain
She's an inspiration
For my graduation
And she helps to keep the classroom sane
Oh teacher I need you like a little child
You got something in you to drive a schoolboy wild
You give me education in the lovesick blues
Help me get straight come out and say
Teacher I, teacher I, teacher I, Teacher I need you..."
