The new addition to the Ft. Sam Theatre will seat 600 people and features:

Designed and outfitted with the latest equipment and features based on a design by RKJ, Inc. subcontractor construction team. Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon and Williams Theater Consultants, the same company that designed the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, contributed design concepts as well. Husband-and-wife theatre veterans Steve Smith and Nicole Coppinger brought their thespian background and insight to the project. The team proposed the theatre as the new home of the Army Soldier, and it will also play host to Operation Rising Star, USA Express, and concerts from touring music and entertainment stars.
Smith, technical director for the Army Soldier Show, has 20 years' experience in professional theatre and got his start working in Army Entertainment at Ft. Gordon. Coppinger, set designer for the Soldier Show, received her bachelor's degree in fine arts and has worked on Broadway in New York City. They worked with RKJ Construction, Inc., IMCOM Force Management Division and the Army Corps of Engineers to ensure that the new theatre would meet the standards necessary for a comprehensive training venue for budding artists and a Broadway-caliber theatre.
At the same time, all parties took great care to ensure that the front part of the original theatre, which contains the stage, main lobby, ticket box, original entrance and facade and VIP seating were restored to their authentic 1927 look. The carpet, paint, furniture, wood etching and silk banners hanging from the ceiling will all be restored or replicated as closely to the original as possible.
The project, which cost $18 million, started in early 2009 and will be completed in September 2011.

The C. Fred Edwards Conservatory opened in 1996 and is West Virginia's only plant conservatory. It features tropical and subtropical plants. The plants in our collection fall into four general categories: Orchids, Agriculturally Important, Fragrant, and Unusual.
OrchidOur Orchid collection contains 400 varieties, which include hybrids and species. They are housed year-round in our greenhouse and brought to the conservatory to be viewed when blooming. Information about orchids can be obtained from the American Orchid Society (AOS).
The Agriculturally Important plant category includes those that are important to most people usually because we eat them or use their products in some way. Examples include cashew, chocolate, banana, papaya, sugarcane, and coffee. Other useful plants include the balsawood tree and carnauba wax palm.
The presence of fragrant plants adds another dimension to the Conservatory. Plants such as the orange jessamine, white ginger, and stephanotus add a pleasing aroma to the air. In addition to these plants, many of the orchids have a delightful fragrance.
Pest ControlPlants in the Unusual category include the pitcher plant, designed to trap insects, the turtle plant, which produces a structure to help it survive droughts, and the sensitive plant, which responds to touch by folding its leaflets.
Predatory insects and mites are used in conjunction with oil and soap sprays to control plant pests such as mealy bugs and aphids. Larger insect pests are controlled by free-range frogs and Tokay geckos. This allows the Conservatory to function as a mini-ecosystem where plants and animals live together to the benefit of one another. The mutually beneficial relationship is apparent in two of our three fish ponds, which function without filtration. Due to the presence of a sculpture, the koi pond does contain a filtration system.
There are two sculptures in the conservatory. One is a site-specific glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly called The Huntington Museum of Art Tower; the other is a more traditional bronze sculpture by Harriet Whitney Frishmuth.
The plants and sculptures in the conservatory can be viewed at any time during regular museum hours. The museum is a member of the American Orchid Society (AOS), the American Public Garden Association (APGA) and the OFA -- An Association of Floricutlure Professionals.

Significant buildings:
There are no individual significant buildings as such in Finn Slough. The importance of the built form in this area stems from the cluster arrangement of the structures, their history as a group, and their development over time. There are no exact dates available for the construction of the individual homes, only that the majority of them were built between the first settlement of the area and approximately 1940. New additions have continued the pattern of incremental development and have retained the overall vernacular character of the buildings.
Overall built form:
The site has a linear boardwalk spine on Whitworth Island, with houses on either side connected to the boardwalk by gangplanks. The buildings can be accessed by boat from the river or on foot by a wooden footbridge from the dyke to the boardwalk. Buildings on the north side are accessed from Dyke Road. The majority of the buildings are one or two storey wood frame dwellings and fishery-related buildings with fairly steep pitched gable roofs. Many of them are on stilts. They have evolved from the early “scow houses” which were rectangular structures on floating barges, and used as dwellings by local fishermen.
Aesthetic qualities:
Although the structures at Finn Slough are rough and vernacular in nature, they still demonstrate a degree of aesthetic quality through a consistent massing and scale of buildings, their clustering along the slough and along a central corridor, and through a rhythm of rooflines, dock structures, and hydro poles. As well, there is a consistency in building materials, and in the muted natural colours of the buildings and the landscape which makes the area particularly attractive.

Lot F Gallery is pleased to present, Its Virtue is Immense: a Pre-Vinylite Society Tribute to Script Lettering, this March. Curated by Meredith Kasabian of Boston’s, Best Dressed Signs, the exhibit features script alphabet focused pieces of art by 20 artists from all over. Meredith explains the idea behind the show:
“This show presents examples of script lettering from some of the best sign painters from around the world and showcases the aesthetic qualities of beautiful hand lettering. But its message runs much deeper than aesthetics alone. “Its Virtue is Immense: a Pre-Vinylite Society Tribute to Script Lettering” explores questions of privilege, access, and the role of the human hand in an increasingly digital world.
Script lettering conveys elegance, grace, sophistication, and class. In centuries past, a “good hand” was viewed as a sign of virtue and breeding, while a “bad hand” (never mind a total inability to write in cursive) was deemed uncivilized. Script lettering featured on a shop sign can communicate that the goods or services provided are high quality. But hand lettered cursive—whether painted on signs or scribbled in personal diaries—is becoming endangered as more and more schools are forgoing its instruction in favor of more practical skills like typing. In our current technological age of immediacy, cursive writing, like sign painting, is considered aesthetically pleasing but non-essential. “Its Virtue is Immense: a Pre-Vinylite Society Tribute to Script Lettering” is a response to the current debate about the future of cursive handwriting and a rally for continued appreciation of hand painted signs.
As the debate rages, advocates and opponents stake their claims on cursive’s relation to the value of aesthetics, its role in brain development and learning, and its usefulness in the face of perpetual advancements in technology. At the heart of the arguments, however, is a question of history and posterity: what will we lose if cursive is abandoned? Typing is faster, more legible, and more accessible than handwriting. In a similar vein, vinyl signs are faster, cheaper, and more interchangeable than a hand painted sign. If cursive handwriting is no longer taught in schools, only people who have the initiative and access will be able to learn it. If cheaply made, poorly designed signs are allowed to pervade our cities and towns, how will anyone know what a quality sign looks like?”
Its Virtue Is Immense invites the viewer to experience the qualities of the artists’ clean brushwork first hand, with an opening on Friday March 14th 2014, from 7 to 11 pm. This picture features asclepias or commonly known as milkweed. It was taken on September 28th at a retention pond near my house. Milkweed plants can be found in meadows or garden patches around North America. Monarch butterflies lay their eggs only on this native species and the caterpillars only eat milkweed plants. The amount of milkweed plants has been decreasing the past years due to the increase use of widespread pesticides which then results in a decrease in monarch butterflies. This is an example of a density dependent factor because the population of the monarch butterflies decreases due to the decrease in milkweed plants which are the butterfly’s (caterpillar) main and only source of food. Monarch butterflies and milkweed plants occupy the same geography and reciprocally affect each other which is an example of coevolution. The milkweed provides a place for the monarch butterflies to lay their eggs and the milkweed plants produce a toxic chemical that keeps pests away from the monarch’s eggs. The monarchs help pollinate the milkweed plants since they have developed a resistance to this toxic chemical.

George Mahan, Jr. designed this lovely courthouse, erected in 1925. The structure features a distinctive copper dome with a cupola clock. It is a contributing property to the Somerville Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
Fayette County is located directly to the east of Memphis in the southwest of the state.
My good friend and EA church expert and all round good bloke, Simon K, www.flickr.com/photos/norfolkodyssey/, provided me a list of fine churches to visit in the Dedham Vale which I should visit if the planned trip to Suffolk ever came off.
I left Dover early on the Thursday morning, and mixed it with the rush hour traffic at Dartfod before turning up the A12 and away from the craziness. And into the driving craziness that is Essex. But that's another story.
I turned off just after crossing the border into Suffolk at Stratford St Mary, and then got lost. I was trying to get to Stoke by Nayland, but I found no signs for it, and had to pull the sat nav out to find my way.
In preparing the list, I noted the name of Boxted, as it was nearly the same name as my first employer, Buxted, so when I saw a sign for Boxted, I followed it.
I thought I was in Suffolk still, but somewhere along the line I must have crossed back into Essex, as there are villages in both counties, very near each other, called Boxted.
Boxted village has two netres, the new part down in the valley, and the old part around the church up the hill. The church took some finding, but along and up Church Hill (always a giveaway), there it was.
I couple were preparing to do some pruning of the brambles growing out of the wall near the gate, and they gave me a disdainful look, but were pleasant enough when I left as I remarked what a wonderful church it is.
In fact, this might be one of my favourite churches I have visited, maybe even the favourite. I was surprised that Simon says so little about it, I found it a delight. The gallery so steeply raked the church felt like a theatre, and I am sure services here are special.

There are two settlements in the parish, a large village a mile away down in the valley, and this smaller, older hamlet around the church.
While I was photographing the exterior, a rather brusque, rude woman asked me to move my bike so she could reverse up to the church because she was 'doing the flowers'. She then parked directly in front of the porch. She must have known her car would spoil my photographs. She got out and took - I kid you not - a single leafy branch from the back of her car and went into the church. I took as long as I could before joining her, by which time she was just leaving, thankfully. She had the grace to say goodbye.
This is a nice interior, full of light, curious pointed arcades punched through thick Norman walls, and a large west gallery raked so steeply that one has the impression of being in a cinema or theatre. An 18th Century memorial has an angel and a skeleton arm-wrestling over a corpse. I liked this one a lot, despite the rude woman.

In the early years of the 11th century a Saxon lord named Edwin built a church at Boxted, on the southern slopes of the Dedham Vale. The site chosen by Edwin for his church is rumoured to have been occupied by the ruins of a Roman villa destroyed by Queen Boudicca in her rebellion against the Romans in 61AD. Certainly the Saxon church was built using Roman bricks, mixed with local rubble.
Early historical studies of Boxted church suggest that Edwin's church used septaria stones, of the sort used to build the town walls of Colchester a few miles to the south.
In the late 11th century Edwin's church was replaced with a grand new building in stone. The builders were Robert de Horkesley and his wife Beatrice. The building was begun sometime around 1090 and completed by 1130. The church was dedicated to St Mary, and that dedication held true until sometime around the Reformation - perhaps when nearby Little Horkesley Priory was dissolved, at which point the church was rededicated to St Peter. The first priest was a monk from Little Horkesley Priory named Roberto. The material was a mix of puddingstone, rubble, and Roman brick, but the upper part of the tower was rebuilt in the 16th century with brick, and brick buttresses added. At the same time a timber porch was added.
he church was always kept in good repair; following the Reformation the locals complained that the chancel was in such poor condition that the vicar refused to hold services there. The church was heavily repaired in 1870 by AW Blomfield, one of the most active Victorian church architects. During a subsequent restoration in 1930 medieval wall paintings were uncovered, then just as quickly painted over again.
Historical Highlights
Interior features include a series of 17th century floor slabs to members of the Maidstone family, and to two servants of the Earl of Oxford. A painted and gilded royal coat of arms to George III are hung on the north wall of the nave. There is a 17th centuiry oak chest and several 12th century windows set high above the north arcade. The simple chancel arch is also 12th century. The nave roof is an intriguing crown-post design. On the wall is an attractive early 17th century memorial to Nathaniel Bacon.
Summming up Boxted church
I'd call St Peters an attractive church, not blessed with an enormous number of historic features, but a church with an ancient and interesting history nonetheless. Rather than making a special trip to see it I'd suggest seeing St Peters as part of a longer outing visiting several of the fascinating historic churches in Dedham Vale, like those at Little Horkesley, Wormingford, and Langham. To the best of my knowledge the church is normally open daylight hours.
Outdoor Garden Water Feature Fountain - Features / Fountains
Garden fountains are beautiful outdoor water accents. Outdoor fountains are used in public parks, gardens, yards, patios and decks. The most traditional design is a tiered waterfall with multiple levels where the water cascades down many levels of stone. A garden fountain is very dramatic and has a high degree of water noise and motion due to the water becoming airborne and crashing into the lower level pool below. The water finds it's way into the pool at the bottom and is taken back to the top again by a powerful water pump to begin it's journey anew. Some famous artists and sculptors have created garden water features which add life and elegance to their sculptures. Today craftsmen and increased knowledge have made available garden fountains for private residences.
Donegall Place in Belfast features a number of interesting lighting masts and over the years I have tried to photograph them but I have always been disappointed by the resulting images.
Each mast celebrates Northern Ireland’s industrial maritime heritage and commemorates one of the great White Star Line ships built in Belfast by Harland and Wolff. Names of the vessels are as follows on order of their position from City Hall:

• Nomadic
• Traffic
These copper clad masts are 16.2 metres in height and are illuminated daily from dusk to dawn to correspond with calendar events and activities. Also, they can be dressed with a banner.
I received a few messages asking why I am writing Donegall rather than Donegal. In Belfast they have Donegall Pass, Donegall Road, Donegal Place and Donegall Streets [to name but a few]. The popular explanation was that when Arthur Chichester, the founder of Belfast, was made the Earl Of Donegal a clerical error resulted in the family becoming the Earls Of Donnegall.

The Perth Amboy Veterans' Memorial features six, 12-foot, black granite silhouette statues sculpted by Blaise Batko, each representing a branch of the military. The logos for the Air Force, Army, National Guard, Navy, Marines, and Merchant Marines are mounted below, on the center granite panel.
The center panel features a plaque honoring Joseph Sadowski, Perth Amboy resident and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who died trying to save the live of another soldier in France in 1944.
In total, over 9,000 names are inscribed on the Perth Amboy Wall of Honor.

Photo taken features a member of the 12 Regiment Royal Artillery on top of his Stormer vehicle outside Blackpool tower. The Stormer took part in a flag raising event as part of Armed Forces Week and helped escort an Armed Forces Week flag to the Blackpool town hall.
Yesterday as part of Armed Forces Week Blackpool played host to a rather special Armed Forces Day flag which had been escorted from the Falkland Islands all the way to the Blackpool town hall via all three services.
The flag started out the day on board the American made Huey 509 helicopter flown by Phil Connolly. The Huey made numerous passes over the Blackpool shoreline, before hovering above an oncoming Royal National Lifeboat Institution craft piloted by Shaun Wright. Once the flag made it onto the RNLI craft, they then proceeded to beaching the boat and passing the flag onto it’s final leg of the journey where it was picked up by members of the 12 Regiment Royal Artillery who after stepping onto their Stormer vehicle, drove to the Blackpool town hall where the town Mayor raised the flag for all to see.
The event was all in aid of Armed Forces Week, seven days dedicated to raising awareness of our armed services. By the end of the event hundreds of Blackpool residents were watching in awe as the flag delicately made it’s way on shore.
