The building features floor-to-ceiling glazing and a column-free interior.
The building is 7 storeys to the level of the St. Katharine Docks quayside and is further topped by elevator towers which in turn are surpassed in height by a slender spire to the north.
All adjacent floors are connected by steel and glass walkways which span the central atrium and are illuminated from below.
The building features high performance glass façades and aluminium louvres on the east and south sides which result in a reduction in energy consumption.
The building is located directly to the east of the Tower of London, on the edge of the City of London and directly to the northeast of Tower Bridge.
The glass frontage on the west side is expressed as a large 'window' with views into the atrium and clear views out west to the Tower of London.

The New Merwede River: protection through depolderization
The Netherlands has long been associated with polders, ever since its engineers became renowned for developing techniques to drain wetlands or reclaim land from the sea and make them usable for agriculture and other development. This is well illustrated by the English saying: “God created the world but the Dutch created Holland.” In an unusual project, one of the famous Dutch polders is being handed back to nature. To reduce the risk of flooding on the New Merwede River, water has to flow faster when its level rises. A large-scale ‘depoldering’ project was embarked upon.
Taking place between 2011 and 2015, this project involves creating a floodplain at the ‘Noordwaard’. This is an area covering approximately 4,450 hectares — approximately 6,000 soccer pitches — in the province of Noord Brabant. Part of the Noordwaard will be ‘depolderized’, restructured and transformed into an intertidal area, through which large amounts of river water will flow to the sea.
Work includes the construction of creeks, dikes, mounds, bridges, pumping stations, roads and channels and a range of soil remediation operations. Sustainable solutions are characteristic features of the approach. Cooperation with local residents, businesses and stakeholders has been crucial to the success of this project.
The number of areas with dike protection in the Noordwaard was reduced and a new ‘Green Wave reducing dike’ was built. To spare the local residents from having to look out onto a higher newly-built dike, a 100 meter-wide willow forest was planted on the river side of the dike. Every other year the willows will be pruned back so that the stumps produce shoots which will catch a large part of the wash. By regularly replacing the willows they are expected to be able to absorb up to 80 per cent of the waves’ energy. Farmers and local residents were given the option of staying in the ‘depolderized’ Noordwaard by relocating their houses and some buildings to the tops of mounds to protect them.
The new landscape will be a resting place for birds throughout the year and the combination of the river discharge and the tides will create opportunities for major nature developments that are unique in Western Europe.
The robin features prominently in British folklore and that of northwestern France, but much less so in other parts of Europe. It was held to be a storm-cloud bird and sacred to Thor, the god of thunder, in Norse mythology. But this one was quietly waiting for me in the Jardins de Bagatelle.
The windmills are the quintessential features of Mykonos landscape. There are plenty of them that have become a part and parcel of Mykonos. Visitors to Mykonos can see the windmills irrespective of the locale. From a distance, one can easily figure out the windmills, courtesy of their silhouette. They are primarily concentrated in the neighborhood of Chora and some are also located in and around Alevkantra. These innovative wheels were primarily used for crushing agricultural yields. In all, there were 16 such windmills in operation.
They are conspicuous by their snow-white color, spherical shape with the customary pointed roof made of the finest variety of wood. In the good old days, they were wind operated as Mykonos is renowned for their gusty wind, which continues to blow even today. The Windmills of Chora and the ones at Ano Mera were a great boon to the people of those localities and they were primarily used for grinding the agricultural products that were meant to be transported to places outside Mykonos.
As of now, with the advent of modernity, the windmills are no longer operational. But they continue to be a symbol of Mykonos rich virile past. Being hundreds of years old, most of the windmills have been thoroughly renovated and some have even been converted into museums, the most famous being the Bonis Windmill.
Mykonos windmills are a living testimony of the island's use of innovation when it came to tapping the enormous power of the wind to grind Mykonos agricultural produces.

Ha Long Bay features over 1,600 limestone karsts and islets rising dramatically from emerald-green waters. These formations, shaped by 500 million years of geological evolution, are dotted with caves, grottoes, and secluded beaches.
The name “Ha Long” translates to “Descending Dragon”, derived from a local legend. According to the tale, a dragon descended from the heavens to protect Vietnam from invaders, creating the bay’s rocky islands by thrashing its tail.
On the roof of the boat you may notice three animated drone operators who are ecstatic over a perfect sunrise. One of the sunrises I will never forget.

Europe, Spain, Valencia, Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe, Saurus skeleton
Let’s return to delightful Valencia and the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias.
As you probably know, the architecture of Santiago Calatrava is based on biomorphic shapes, skeletal structures are his thing. Whereas the Estação de Oriente is based on a whale, the ‘Turning torso’ in Malmö (Sweden) on a man, the morphology of the Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe seems to be based on creatures of the Jurassic era.
The Museo is a wonderful science, biology and environment museum. Full interactivity is one of its features, the motto of which is “Forbidden not to touch, not to feel, not to think”.
And indeed, visiting is an engaging delight. It’s located in "The City of Arts and Sciences (Valencian: Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències. Spanish: Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, a cultural and architectural quarter which formed one of the reason why we at last visited Valencia (the other reason was the spectacular ‘Fallas’). It's near the old riverbed of the river Turia, which was drained and rerouted after a catastrophic flood in 1957, and turned into a lovely park. The Ciutat’ is also designed by Santiago Calatrava (and Félix Candela) and opened in April, 1998.
True to the legacy of the star architect/engineer, it costed nearly three times the initially expected cost of €300 million and almost bankrupted the region.
Inside the Museo is the skeleton of a family member of the dinosaur and the relation between it keleton and Calatrava’s architecture is probably immediately obvious.
This is number 278 of Museum.

A picturesque tall white-harled house on the north side of the junction between Back Causeway and The Cross in Culross (W FIfe), The Study dates from c.1610. This is said to be where Bishop Leighton of Dunblane (1611-84), who lived nearby in Bishop Leighton's House, composed his sermons. Built as a merchant's house, next to Culross Palace one of the finest in Culross, the building was acquired by the National Trust for Scotland in the 1930s. It was renovated by Ian G. Lindsay and Partners in 1959, winning a Civic Trust Award in 1962. The Study is now A-listed and is open to the public for guided tours.
The building is L-plan and comprises a three-storey main block, with a tower facing the street which rises higher. This contains a turnpike stair, with the upper stage corbelled out and containing the actual study. The orange pantiled roofs feature crow-stepped gables and catslide dormers. The windows to the front feature lattice leadwork and wooden shutters below, allowing the windows to open. Inside there are original fireplaces and timber panelling, while the beamed ceiling of the first-floor room is a reconstruction of the 1960s, brightly painted with fruit and flowers in homage to its 17th century forerunner.
Features of Tyneside around Newcastle Castle. The Castle Keep, offering superb views across the city, down to the River Tyne and across Gateshead, also providing a grandstand view of the railway and the station.

Excerpt from conservationhamilton.ca:
Phoenix Creek Sink: We can see the water sinking underground here. Scientists have tested the water and know that this is the same stream we saw spring up at Pottruff Spring.
It is difficult to guess the course the water took to get from here to there because it travels underground and we cannot see it flow. But, we can look at the evidences of water on the surface and make hypotheses.
One way scientists can tell if water has flown underground is by checking the water’s temperature. In the summer, the spring water will be colder than water from a surface stream because the sun will not warm it up as it flows underground. In the winter, the spring water will be warmer because the cold air will not have chilled it, as it did the surface water.
Tram 28 Lisbon. Classic yellow trams retaining original 1930s features like brass dials & polished wood interiors
The number 28 tram in Lisbon connects Martim Moniz with Campo Ourique, and passes through the popular tourist districts of Graca, Alfama, Baixa and Estrela.
For visitors, this is the classic Lisbon tram journey, riding in a quaint yellow tram as it rattles and screeches through the narrow streets of the city.
Along the E28 route, delightful Remodelado trams trundle, and these retain many of their original 1930s features, including polished wood interiors, brass dials and cheery yellow paintwork. In any other city, these trams would be housed in a museum, but in Lisbon, they are an integral part of the public transport network.
These historic trams are still in use, as the number 28 tram route is completely unsuitable for modern trams, due to its numerous tight turns, narrow streets and steep gradients. The E28 tram follows a very scenic route, passing through many of Lisbon’s historic districts, and provides one of the best tours of the city.
The ride on the number 28 tram is one of the highlights of Lisbon, but its popularity means it frequently suffers from over-tourism. There are some very simple tips to get the most from the experience.
• Ride the tram early (or late) in the day, to avoid the mid-day crowds.
• Board the tram at Martim Moniz (or Campo Ourique), as there is a better chance of getting a seat.
• Always be wary of pickpockets
• Purchase the 24-hour public transport ticket from any metro station. This removes the hassle of buying a ticket on board and is exceptional value for money
• Ride the entire route, as there is so much to see.
• If standing, hold on tight, as the brakes are very sharp!
7400' of double stacked, 53 foot domestics assigned to train Q CHISTO6 04L trade Chicago's bustling metropolis for the rural farmlands, wind turbines and grain elevators that dot the many miles of this bucolic Illinois landscape, seen here sprinting through small-town Ransom, milepost 79 of the Chillicothe Sub, still within the infant stages of their long, westward journey across the old Santa Fe Transcontinental to California. The front runner on this Sunday edition Chicago-Corwith to Stockton intermodal Q is C44-9W #987, which wears the short lived Heritage 1 livery from BNSF's original corporate image, conjured up following a September 1995 merger between both the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe and Burlington Northern railroads. This sharp looking H1 scheme features a large orange band running the length of each locomotive marked with company initials and flanked both above and below by thin yellow stripes and dark green paint, brought all together by BNSF's round "Wagon Wheel" logo adorned on the nose. Formerly relegated to trailing service only, the entire fleet of these 900, 1000, and 1100 series General Electric Dash 9's were all recently upgraded with the necessary PTC electrical equipment to become lead qualified out on the mainlines; Today's pictured 987 reaping such benefits.
Peter Arnold Photo • Doug Harrop Collection • June 1, 1974
By June of 1974, the service life of Southern Pacific's Fairbanks-Morse H-24-66 "Train Master" locomotives was winding down. In this fine roster shot, 3021 is missing a few parts when photographed in SP's San Jose, California yard.
SP rostered 16 of the beasts, and two of them were demonstrators. Dressed in "Black Widow" paint and delivered in 1953, the Fairbanks-Morse H-24-66, dubbed the "Train Master", was known for its substantial car body. At 2,400 hp, it was the highest-horsepower road switcher on the market when introduced.
While initially praised for its high power output, the complex opposed-piston engine and other design features led to maintenance challenges, ultimately impacting its overall acceptance and the eventual departure of FM from the locomotive industry.
Southern Pacific utilized them for heavy freight and passenger service. In their final years, they could be found pulling commuter rail trains up and down the peninsula between San Francisco and San Jose, California.
For Macro Mondays' #sharp theme
This image features the finer of my two cheese graters. It's approx 2 inches across. We all know that feeling of accidentally grating your knuckles instead of the cheese...ouch....
My original idea used a far bolder, rainbow-coloured background. But given the nature of this important day, I created a slightly more sombre, regal background. Purple has long been associated with royalty, as it was originally a very expensive colour to produce. There are also hints of gold and silver in there.
I also wanted to try that technique of producing shaped bokeh, using a template "key-hole" at the front of the lens. (I've been wanting to try it for aaaggges....) My template was intended to be crown-shaped, fitting with the day. It may not look fully crown-like, but the sharp, pointy-ness seemed to fit
the theme regardless.
I can't call this a tribute to HRH Queen Elizabeth II, but it has elements to reflect that this is such a special day in the history of the UK. Whether you are a royalist or not, I hope no-one would deny the dedication and self-sacrifice she demonstrated throughout her extraordinary life. May she rest in peace.
The Castle of Guimarães, located in northern Portugal, is a medieval fortress of immense historical significance. Built-in the 10th century to protect the local monastery, towers and central keep dominate the surrounding landscape. Its distinctive square layout features eight towers connected by thick walls, enclosing a courtyard. The castle played a crucial role in the country's formation and is often called the "Cradle of Portugal." Today, it is a national monument, offering visitors a glimpse into Portugal's rich history and architectural heritage. The castle's well-preserved structure continues to captivate tourists and history enthusiasts alike.
Number five in this series features Stuart, a small Iowa town in Adair County with around 1,800 residents. The old downtown area in Stuart has some lovely historic buildings, with trendy retail shops and varied dining options. For example, Doe A Deer is a home goods store offering kitchenware, specialty foods and other gifts. Next door, the Maven Blush Boutique offers chic and stylish women's apparel and accessories.
Developed with Darktable 4.8.0.
About the series: Life in a small Midwestern town often means a slower pace of life, close-knit communities, and a strong connection to the land and agriculture. Residents typically have a strong sense of pride in their hometown and a friendly, neighborly attitude. Small towns usually have limited employment and entertainment options, but the tradeoff is typically a lower cost of living and a quieter, more peaceful environment. Presented in black and white at night, I hope to capture the essence of a few small Iowa towns in this series. Series Album: flic.kr/s/aHBqjBWTai

looking for symmetry here, I didn't want that, I wanted to capture the many design levels, the absolute abundance of visual stimuli in the opulent choir gallery, which in case of doubt has no symmetry at all ... ;-) ...

It is one of the most lavish churches in the Occident.
Saint Anthony continued the work of Francis of Assisi.
The Basilica of Saint Anthony (Italian: Basilica di Sant’Antonio, regionally often just Basilica del Santo or simply Santo) in Padua is one of the most famous and most visited shrines in Italy, says my friend Wiki...
It is one of the eight international shrines in the world.
It is a papal basilica and a minor basilica. It is the first large church building with a vault in the terraferma and was built between 1232 and around 1310 with Romanesque and Gothic style elements to accommodate the tomb of Saint Anthony of Padua (died 1231 in Arcella, now a district of Padua).
The basilica is 118 m long and 32.5 m wide, the short transept is 55 m wide. The greatest interior height is 38.5 m.
The church has a three-aisled nave, a polygonal choir, ambulatory and a ring of chapels in the east.
The nave and wide transept are in the typical architectural style of Italian mendicant churches.
The ambulatory choir, the ring of chapels (similar to San Francesco in Bologna) and the intermediate bay inserted into the transept are of French origin.
The 37 m high and 28 m wide facade, the oldest part of the church building, combines Venetian-Byzantine, Lombard-Romanesque and Gothic elements.
The eight domes similar to the 5-dome system of St. Mark's Basilica in nearby Venice, the two slender, hexagonal and 68 m high bell towers and two minaret-like turrets are typical features of the Byzantine architectural style. The angel on the conical dome above the crossing sits enthroned at a height of 72 m. Two more rose windows on the sides of the high altar illuminate the interior of the church.
I have rarely seen such confusing complexity before. The building ensemble alone has three cloisters and chapels with famous frescoes such as a choir with art by Donatello.
Padua (Italian: Padova, Latin: Patavium) is an Italian municipality and capital of the province of Padua of the same name. It lies on the edge of the Po Valley, 30 km west of Venice, on the Bacchiglione River and has 206,651 inhabitants.
With the botanical garden and several 14th-century fresco cycles spread across the old town, Padua has two entries on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city is also home to the University of Padua (founded in 1222), one of the oldest European universities and the third oldest in Italy after Bologna (founded in 1088) and Modena (founded in 1175).

Hard to ignore this rocky natural leading line to the lighthouse!
The history of Cape Palliser Lighthouse:
Cape Palliser features prominently in Maori history and the legends of Kupe. The area also featured in the colonisation of New Zealand.
The rugged coast and notorious Cook Strait gales contributed to many early shipwrecks. Six months before the light was lit in 1897, a ship was wrecked within 4 miles of the new tower and 12 of the 21 crew drowned. While a light on Cape Palliser reduced the number of shipwrecks, the area still remained hazardous for the unwary.
The tower at Cape Palliser has been painted with red and white stripes to make it stand out from the hills behind it. There are only two other lighthouses in New Zealand with stripes, rather than the standard plain white. Dog Island Lighthouse and Cape Campbell Lighthouse have black and white stripes.
Operation of the Cape Palliser light:
Cape Palliser lighthouse is still fitted with the original Fresnel lens, which was installed in 1897.
In 1954 the light was converted from oil to diesel-generated electricity. In 1967 it was connected to mains electricity. A diesel-electric generator provides standby emergency power.
The lighthouse was automated and the keepers were withdrawn in 1986.
The light is monitored remotely from Maritime New Zealand’s Wellington office.
Life at Cape Palliser light station:
Owing to its isolation in the early days, life at Cape Palliser created its own unique problems for the keepers and their families.
The original access to the lighthouse was a dirt track up a 58 metre-high cliff. This was a dangerous walk for the keepers, especially in stormy weather.
In 1912 a set of 258 steps were built up to the tower, which provided the keepers with much safer access, although still a physically demanding walk.
Stores were delivered to the station every 3 months. If the seas were too rough, the stores could be landed at the more sheltered Kawakawa Bay, some 6 kilometres away. The Cape Palliser letter book is filled with countless tales of stores being lost during the unloading process.
With the storage buildings and keepers’ homes at sea level, the unloading was easier than at many other stations where goods had to be hauled up cliffs using a trolley on rails. The keepers still had to haul the light supplies (oil and kerosene) up the cliff face to the light station. They did this on a railway, using a hand winch.
When the lighthouse was eventually connected to the nearby settlements by road, keepers would collect their mail and supplies once a week from Pirinoa. (Courtesy www.maritimenz.govt.nz)

Beinn Alligin (Scottish Gaelic: Beinn Àilleagan) is one of the classic mountains of the Torridon region of Scotland, lying to the north of Loch Torridon, in the Highlands. The name Beinn Alligin is from the Scottish Gaelic, meaning Jewelled Hill. The mountain has two peaks of Munro status: Tom na Gruagaich (922 metres (3,025 ft)) to the south, and Sgùrr Mhòr at 986 metres (3,235 ft) to the north.
One of the most prominent features of Beinn Alligin is a great cleft known as Eag Dhubh na h-Eigheachd (black gash of the wailing) or Leum na Caillich, which cuts into the ridge south of the summit. It is the scar of the most spectacular rockslide or rock avalanche in Britain, which runs out into the corrie of Toll a' Mhadaidh Mor. It occurred around 3750 years ago and is around 3.5 million cubic metres in volume.According to local folklore shepherds on the mountain would hear cries from the gash; those who investigated the source of these cries would inevitably fall to their deaths.
Beinn Alligin lies on the National Trust for Scotland's Torridon Estate, which has been owned by the charity since 1967,[6] and forms part of both a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

This image features the Green Ibis (Mesembrinibis cayennensis), captured in Restrepo, Meta, Colombia. Known for its iridescent green and purple feathers, the ibis stands out beautifully against the vibrant backdrop of the lush Colombian environment. The bird was perched delicately on a tree branch, where its sleek silhouette contrasted against the soft light filtering through the canopy. The calm, tranquil atmosphere of the scene was a perfect match for capturing the bird’s elegant form and reflective plumage.
In terms of technique, I used a Canon R5 with a 800mm f/11 lens and a 1.4x extender to maintain the required reach while preserving image clarity. The f/16 aperture ensured that both the bird and its environment were in focus, while the ISO 1600 helped balance the low light of the forest. The resulting sharpness and depth allow the vibrant plumage and the bird’s intricate textures to come through vividly. Capturing such a shot in the wild, with the ibis being perfectly positioned, required patience, but the payoff was worth it.

The Outer Garden

thegaien.blogspot.com/2024/04/to-find-solace-in-moonopen-...
The motif of the new garden is the Noh play "Hagoromo."
Noh is one of Japan’s traditional types of theater with more than 600 years of history.
In the story, a fisherman named Hakuryō finds a celestial robe (hagoromo) on the shore. He intends to keep it as a family heirloom, but the celestial maiden laments her inability to return to the celestial realm without her robe. Moved by her sorrow, Hakuryō sympathizes and agrees to return the robe in exchange for witnessing her celestial dance. Although the celestial maiden initially hesitates, fearing Hakuryō's doubt, she eventually returns to the heavens after performing her graceful dance, leaving behind blessings upon the land.
The garden's design draws inspiration from traditional Japanese paintings, aiming to represent two-dimensional elements in a three-dimensional space. It features representations of white clouds and waves, symbolizing the celestial realm and the waterside, respectively.
As I repeatedly reconstruct the garden to align with my vision, I sometimes doubt whether it truly conveys the warmth I intend. In moments of uncertainty, I find solace in the unwavering support and trust of AKI69, whose presence has been instrumental in the realization of this project. The beauty of the architecture, plants, and creatures within the garden constantly inspires and encourages me.
May this new garden become a testament to beauty, enriching your soul with its presence.
Looking forward to the enchanting presence of celestial beings in this garden where the worlds of the sea and sky intertwine without doubt.
