I've always loved the beginning BW segment of the Wizard of Oz film. In particular the scenes where Dorothy meets Professor Marvel just before the storm brews up. The sepia tones, the dusty landscape, the dark clouds, the shadows, it's all part of classic visual storytelling. It sets the mood and atmosphere before even a word of dialog is spoken. I think, like most of us, scenes from that film are hard wired into my mind because we first viewed it at such a young age, and probably multiple times. All these years later, I still react to environments that remind me of the film. I'm insipred to attempt to recreate them photographically.

Pain froze you, for years — and fear — leaving scars.
But now, as though miraculously, it seems, here you are
walking easily across the ground, and into town
as though you were floating on air, which in part you are,
or riding a wave of what feels like the world's good will —
though helped along by something foreign and older than you are
and yet much younger too, inside you, and so palpable
an X-ray, you're sure, would show it, within the body you are,
not all that far beneath the skin, and even in
some bones. Making you wonder: Are you what you are —
with all that isn't actually you having flowed
through and settled in you, and made you what you are?
The pain was never replaced, nor was it quite erased.
It's memory now — so you know just how lucky you are.
You didn't always. Were you then? And where's the fear?
Inside your words, like an engine? The car you are?!
Face it, friend, you most exist when you're driven
away, or on — by forms and forces greater than you are.

My word for 2014. To fear·less, to face my fears, to push through them and come out okay (and hopefully in a better place).

an interesting wing inside the abandoned and badly decaying Odd Fellows Retirement Home in Liberty,MO.The best I can tell, the home closed in the '70s.A local winery now owns the complex, and has made the old orphanage into a winery and reception destination. In fact, the day we were there,a wedding reception was going on.It was a little weird looking out the windows of the decaying home and seeing couples in elegant dress walking around....
The old complex is purported to be haunted, and the Ghost Adventures team recently investigated and had several "experiences"...
Some info on the winery and the history of the Odd Fellows Home and Complex here....
“It is fear which leads us to war, ... It is fear which leads us to believe that we must kill or be killed. Fear which leads us to attack those who have not attacked us. Fear which leads us to ring our nation in the very heavens with weapons of mass destruction.”
~Dennis Kucinich
Beibei has an inexplicable fear of the kitchen tap! He was on the countertop being given a brushing down but when I turned the tap on, he jumped onto the floor and could only stare at the shiny metallic object.

We'd had a day when it was too misty for landscape shots, so I'd been playing with waves on a remote headland watching a small flock of Purple Sandpiper. They were also having to keep moving as breaking waves kept moving them on. I nearly got washed away with giant waves .
It was exhilarating, but later that afternoon the sky cleared and the sea became a millpond. It was hard to believe it was the same day. Fear of Drowning is by British Sea Power.
Serene ! Tranquil ! Heaven on earth ! This is Kashmir ! Across the river you can find the ruins of famed Sharada Peeth , temple of Saraswati ! Kashmir was known as Sharada desh and Sharada was Kashmira Puravashini ! You cannot go across ! Sharada Peeth is on the other side of border. You are "watched by enemy" , you are within their " range"..... you cannot deny fact but there are certain things which gives your mind wings and takes you beyond fear, makes you free !
Come to Gurez ; there is no fear !

Just a simple glider I made for Hobgoblin in my series. Sorry for the poor angle shot but you get the gist. :P
Fear keeps us focused on the past or worried about the future. If we can acknowledge our fear, we can realize that right now we are okay. Right now, today, we are still alive, and our bodies are working marvelously. Our eyes can still see the beautiful sky. Our ears can still hear the voices of our loved ones.
