A choker in logging is a steel cable with a fastener on it; when fastened it will act similar to a slipknot on a rope that will tighten on the log as the cable is pulled.
My nephew works for the forestry. Each year he competes in logging competitions at Fort Bragg, California. There are four logs as the one in the picture, the competition begins with the competitors standing on the first log (the starting log), they race toward the end jumping over the logs and pick up the choker cable at the end, then carrying the choker cable, they race back jumping over the logs back to the starting log, they throw the end of the cable over the log and drag the end of it back under the log, set the end in the choke, then touch the second log to end the race.
In this picture my nephew Madison had just picked up the choker cable off the ground and is racing back to jump over the logs again to the starting log to set the choke.
