Cotter pins and magnetic hooks.
I set up a nearly identical arrangement of hooks about 1½ years earlier, just dropping hints in the tags without explaining what I did. Since magnetism is the theme this time around, I used a large washer, placed behind a sheet of matte board held at an angle, to secure the upper hook magnetically. Cotter pins were chosen to be unique; their low profile is a bonus.

I have a jar full of these safety pins and used them when I sandwiched my quilts together before sewing!
Valentine's Day is over, time to get back to work. But not without taking a little extra bling along for those glamorous moments in life :-)
A 2" C-clamp (size of the frame please see below) with a Swarovski lead glass stone "fastened" in its "mouth" (without any aids such as glue or modelling clay). The light was tricky, in order to get that sparkle, I needed, of course, to spotlight the stone (from left-side and right-behind), but then everything else was way too bright. I experimented with different metering modes, and it turned out that SH (Spot metering - shadow control) did the trick for me.
Size of the frame: 6,5 x 4,5 cm / 2,5 x 2,1 inches

Der Valentinstag ist vorüber, aber man kann ja trotzdem ein bisschen Geglitzer für die glamourösen Momente am Tag mitnehmen ;-)
Eine 2-Zoll-Schraubzwinge mit Swarovski-Kristall "im Mund" (ohne irgendwelche Hilfsmittel wie Knete oder Uhu befestigt). Der Knackpunkt war das Licht, um den Stein zum Glitzern zu bringen, musste ich ihn ja anstrahlen (von seitlich-vorne links und hinten rechts), dann war aber alles andere ziemlich überstrahlt. Also habe ich mit der Belichtungsmessung (und Blende) experimentiert und die Einstellung "SH - Spot Schatten" brachte das gewünschte Ergebnis.

A fastener from a disused railroad bridge dating back to 1880 just north of Willshire Ohio. I would guess that this fastener was added much later as part of a repair.

Fasteners come in various shapes, sizes, and materials—typically metal, plastic, or fabric—depending on their application. Their main function is to hold parts in place, allow for easy assembly or disassembly, and provide structural integrity to a product or structure.
Common types of fasteners:
Screws, Nails, Bolts and nuts, Clips, Zippers, Buttons, Velcro
So, for example:
In construction, a fastener might be a screw or bolt.
In clothing, a fastener could be a button, zipper, or snap.
In mechanics, it might be a pin, clamp, or rivet.

Isn't it amazing that what looks like an ever so (s)light connection in close-up can ruin a woolen scarf, pullover, you name it... for good? Velcro. Invented in 1941 by Swiss engineer Georges de Mestral (patented in 1951), who often had to remove burrs of burdock from his clothes and his dogs' fur after taking long walks with them in the Alps. He took a closer look at the the burrs under the microscope and saw the tiny hooks which would catch on anything with a loop. This gave him the idea for the hook and loop fastener. The term "velcro" is a composite made up of the French words *vel*ours and *cro*chet: velvet and hook.

Schon erstaunlich, dass das, was nach einer superleichten Verbindung in der Nahaufnahme ausschaut, ein beliebiges Teil aus Wolle binnen Sekunden ruinieren kann: Klettband. Erfunden vom schweizerischen Ingenieur Georges de Mestral im Jahr 1941 (patentiert im Jahr 1951): Mestral musste nach langen Spaziergängen mit seinen Hunden in den Alpen immer wieder Kletten aus dem Fell seiner Hunde und seiner Kleidung entfernen. So kam er auf die Idee, sich die Kletten mal unter dem Mikroskop anzuschauen und entdeckte die winzigen Häkchen. Die Idee für den Klettverschluss war geboren. In anderen Ländern ist Klettband unter dem Namen "Velcro" bekannt, einer Zusammensetzung aus den französischen Wörtern *vel*ours und *cro*chet: Samt und Haken.

This is my photo for the Macro Mondays challenge. The theme this week is "fasteners". This is a gate latch which fastens the gate to the fence post.
It is also my photo for the 52 in 2018 Challenge - #38 - Something with rust.

While it can also be used for school projects at home under adult supervision, I'm not certain students are still allowed to bring their own staplers of any size to school anymore.
