If you are driving up the Alaska Highway this summer - you will find yourself passing by our favorite restaurant in Tok. (Pronounced: "Toke".) Yes - it's the famous "Fast Eddys" that I have mentioned so many times in my photostream. Great rooms and cabins, as well as good food. What more could you possibly want after a few days on the road? See you there . . . 😉
in Tok Alaska. That's pronounced 'Toke.'
I didn't expect to see much or any old neon in Tok, so was pleasantly surprised by this sign. It appears to be a hybrid with newer above and an older sign probably salvaged from elsewhere making up the bottom.
If you're headed south on the Alaska Highway and hungry, you might want to grab something in Tok, it could be many miles before you get another chance. Same with gas.
To celebrate the start of the 2008 Great Lakes shipping season. A trio of "Tomcats" performing a Hi-Speed Flyby of "Fast Eddy" in Lorain, OH. Only in our dreams though since the F-14's have been officially retired by the Navy and this is a photo of the Ryerson coming to Lorain in December.
I am so glad to be able to travel again. Doc and I made a small getaway to our favorite restaurant for their halibut and chips. The halibut was perfectly fried and tasted like it was just pulled from the icy seas that surround our beautiful state. Be sure and try it, if you ever find yourself in Alaska.
This joint is between 20 and 25 miles (32 to 40 kilometers) from St. Louis, Missouri, just across the Mississippi River.
The Hustler (1961) Movie
The Hustler is a 1961 American drama film directed by Robert Rossen from the 1959 novel of the same name he and Sidney Carroll adapted for the screen. It tells the story of small-time pool hustler "Fast Eddie" Felson and his desire to break into the "major league" professional hustling, and high stakes wagering by high-rollers that follows it. He throws his raw talent and ambition up against the best player in the country; seeking to best the legendary pool player "Minnesota Fats." After initially losing to Fats and getting involved with unscrupulous manager Bert Gordon, Eddie returns to beat Fats, but only after paying a terrible personal price.
The film was shot on location in New York City. It stars Paul Newman as Eddie Felson, Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats, Piper Laurie as Sarah, and George C. Scott as Bert.
The Hustler was a major critical and popular success, gaining a reputation as a modern classic. Its exploration of winning, losing, and character garnered a number of major awards; it is also credited with helping to spark a resurgence in the popularity of pool. Real-life pool player Rudolf Wanderone, known at the time as "New York Fats" and "Chicago Fats", claimed to be the real life inspiration for Gleason's character, Minnesota Fats, and adopted the name as his own.
Quotes
[Fast Eddie is bothered because Bert called him a born loser]
Fast Eddie: Cause, ya see, twice, Sarah... once at Ames with Minnesota Fats and then again at Arthur's, in that cheap, crummy pool room, now why'd I do it, Sarah? Why'd I do it? I coulda beat that guy, coulda beat 'im cold, he never woulda known. But I just hadda show 'im. Just hadda show those creeps and those punks what the game is like when it's great, when it's REALLY great. You know, like anything can be great, anything can be great. I don't care, BRICKLAYING can be great, if a guy knows. If he knows what he's doing and why and if he can make it come off. When I'm goin', I mean, when I'm REALLY goin' I feel like a... like a jockey must feel. He's sittin' on his horse, he's got all that speed and that power underneath him... he's comin' into the stretch, the pressure's on 'im, and he KNOWS... just feels... when to let it go and how much. Cause he's got everything workin' for 'im: timing, touch. It's a great feeling, boy, it's a real great feeling when you're right and you KNOW you're right. It's like all of a sudden I got oil in my arm. The pool cue's part of me. You know, it's uh - pool cue, it's got nerves in it. It's a piece of wood, it's got nerves in it. Feel the roll of those balls, you don't have to look, you just KNOW. You make shots that nobody's ever made before. I can play that game the way... NOBODY'S ever played it before.
Sarah Packard: You're not a loser, Eddie, you're a winner. Some men never get to feel that way about anything.
Tok is the first town anyone driving to Alaska encounters, and the last Alaska town for all those leaving Alaska. If you pass up "Fast Eddy's" on the way in or out, you are missing a great meal. Also the rooms are neat and clean, and you will not be sorry if you spring for a cabin for the night. Three Bears is a great store to replenish your supplies in and it is located right next to the Chevron gas station. Of course souvenirs are available at various locations in town. .

really, those girls said they wanted a stripper to dub, so he all went and was starting to strip for thier friend! true story!
Went to Fast Eddie's Bon Air on Sunday night with Ron, Pam and Chrissy. Was a first time for the three of them (not for me). Ron was a little surprised to see the massive crowd of people when we first walked in. This place is freakin' huge, and then last year they added an enclosed patio to trump the Illinois smoking ban, basically adding double the occupancy to an already super crowded place.
This place is a legendary roadhouse bar and grill, famous for a menu with less than 10 menu items. They have 1/2 pound burgers (Fat Eddie Burger) for just 99 cents, the Big Elwood Steak on a Stick for $2.99. You really have to see this place in action to believe it.
Not to mention they have the coldest beer in town (not just a boast), and some rockin' live entertainment. This place is always packed, and it sort of a legend in its own.
Originally owned by the Busch family, it had to be sold since state law prohibited brewers from owning any bar. It has been around since the 1920's in Alton, Illinois, and the rich history of Alton is livened up by this place.
This little lady captured my attention inside here. She had a natural beauty, a sincere look of happiness on her face, and an innocence I would kill to have again. Wondered if the BL on the bottle didn't stand for Beautiful Lady!
