SYNESTHESIA – Synesthesia is a neurological condition that results in a combination of sensory perceptions. Synesthesia is an extreme sensitivity of the body, as a result of which all the senses merge.
To underscore the hypersensitivity of the body, and to visualize this entanglement of sensory perceptions Van Herpen secured shiny metal foil on specially treated leather that generated a confusing visual effect without a steady fixation point. You can see colors when hearing music or experience taste. People who have this 'abnormality' are actually living in a constant natural trip. In this collection Iris has approached the body as a manipulative, sensitive and fragile object by enlarging body parts through transparency, movement and extreme repetition so as to emphasize extremely refined craftsmanship. She confused the eyes and gives clothing an extra dimension by combining movement with liveliness. "I wonder if in the future clothing will support some of our senses or even take over."

RADIATION INVASION - Radiation Invasion translates Iris van Herpen’s question of what we could do with our daily (over)dose of electromagnetic waves and digital information streams if we could see them.
In these designs the wearer seems to be surrounded by a whimsical complex of wavy rays, flickering patterns, vibrating particles, and reflecting pleats. The collection is about all the invisible rays (particularly electronics) with which we are constantly surrounded and immersed. ][Something which is both scary and interesting. Iris thinks that in the future other ways will be found to detect radiation, where, apart from the body, a new dimension will develop. This collection is her representation of how it would look if we could detect radiation in the future and if we could control the radiation waves, if we, as a magnet, could attract and repel. 'Being beautiful" gets a whole new and more comprehensive form.
You don't need a magic genie lamp to make your wishes come true. You have the power to make it happen if you believe and at least try. It's in your hands.
Self portrait. Dress was made by my daughter who is studying costume/fashion designing in college.
On a side note, I burned my fingers while holding a smoke bomb in my hand. VERY stupid thing to do on my part. Thanks to fellow flickr buddy Ben Zank, he pointed out to me I was using the wrong kind of smoke bomb. He told me to use canister type smoke bombs which you can hold. Thank you Ben! I will definitely use the other kind next time. I'm sharing this so others won't make the same mistake.

MICRO – Inspired by the pictures that science photographer Steve Gschmeissner took using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) technology, Micro zooms in on the world of microorganisms that is completely hidden from our sight.
The pictures show specimens that are dead, dried, and chemically fixated to preserve and stabilize their structures. Van Herpen remains interested in the living organism. Her designs allude to armature, tentacles, cell structures, and plasma. Some seem moist others glow and move while being worn, coming to live on the body.

MUMMIFICATION – Van Herpen became captivated with the macabre beauty of ancient Egyptian mummification and the intense devotion that surrounds the process.
With techniques to swaddle, wrap and cover the body along with the typical geometric and graphic patterns of Egyptian mummies, she elaborates on the practice of the ancient Egyptians to create a new reality for their dead. She considers the 'reality' that they created for their dead as the reality, while they considered daily life an illusion. ][She understood this as follows: take everything that seems obvious at face value, but create your own reality. Iris realized this chain of thoughts by combining their ancient techniques with modern materials and thus creating her own new reality. The wrapping and binding of the body and the emphasize of certain parts of the body such as the Egyptians did (as the head) are central in the collection. The collection is handmade from (ECCO) leather, which has been treated with different techniques and lace, tens of thousands of eyelets, ball chain, motorcycle chain and thousands of metal balls.

CAPRIOLE - Iris van Herpen made her debut in Paris as member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture with this collection. Besides being a compilation of highlights from previous collections, this new collection also presented five striking outfits that evoke the feeling just before and during a free-fall parachute jump.
A ‘leap in the air’ (the meaning of the French word Capriole) that Van Herpen once in a while takes to reset her body and mind. The five outfits are a reflection of the extreme feelings experienced during that jump. For instance, the dress consisting of serpentine forms made of black acrylic sheets, nicknamed the ‘snake dress’, evokes the mental state at the moment before the jump when, as Van Herpen explains, “all my energy is in my head and I feel as though my mind is snaking through thousands of bends”.

VOLTAGE - For her fourth collection presented in Paris as a guest member of the Chambre syndicale de la Haute Couture, Iris van Herpen explores the electricity of the body.
Experimenting with its use in the field of creation, this collection seeks to portray its tangible movement and power. This ability of light and electricity to change states and bodies is reproduced using the most innovative technologies. Described as an alchemist approach to fashion, Van Herpen’s designs perpetually embrace new collaborations with artists, architects and researchers. As part of the show she collaborated with new Zealand artist Carlos Van Camp, echoing his notion of controlling high voltage electricity and its interaction with the human body. Van Camp experiments with three million volts running through bodies. Van Herpen shares Canadian architect Philip Beesley’s fascination with materials and structures. They focus specifically on how the reaction of chemistry and electricity causes structures to respond to their environment and react as living beings.
Iris van Herpen is also know for being today's leading fashion designer in the use of 3d printing. Drawing on the idea of movement, the flexible 3D printed dresses are a revolution, a result of collaborations with Neri Oxman of the MIT Media Lab as well as Keren Oxman and Prof. Craig Carter of MIT with Stratasys, and architect Julia Koerner with Materialise.

REFINERY SMOKE – The ambiguous character of refinery smoke, both beautiful and poisonous, inspired this collection. Van Herpen translated the elusiveness of industrial smoke into specially woven metal gauze. She turned metal threads into an extremely soft and pliable material.
The metal kept its characteristic of oxidation and Van Herpen considers this inherent chemical process as (visually) reflecting the dual aspect of industrial smoke. The organic, liquid, up-creeping smoke looks smooth and dynamic, yet at the same time is frightening, sinister and dangerous. Iris wants to give the viewer this mixed feeling about the collection by manipulating the unpleasant industrial material metal mesh into something soft and lively. The smoke seems to be alive, is tragic but also soft like something you would want to wear. "Will there be a time when clothing is unnecessary and that something as intangible as smoke could be 'worn' on the body?

ESCAPISM - Escaping from everyday reality through addictive digital entertainment incites in Iris van Herpen not only feelings of emptiness but also associations with the grotesque, the extreme and the fantastic.
This collection aims to capture both the exaltation of these addictions, like the disproportionate attention for celebrities (the ‘new heroes’) and its dark flipside, the never fulfilled hunger that is inherent to it. Another important source of inspiration were the exuberant baroque sculptures of the American artist Kris Kuksi. Dramatic bulging spherical shapes alternate with lace- and skeleton-like 3D-prints, and silver-grey fabrics that seem to reflect their own surface.

HYBRID HOLISM – The project Hylozoic Ground by the Canadian architect and artist Philip Beesley provided the inspiration for this collection. Hylozoic refers to Hylozoism, the ancient belief that all matter is in some sense alive.
Beesley created a responsive architectural system that uses hylozoism in a quite specific way, that is, “we are working with subtle materials, electricity and chemistry, weaving together interactions that at first create an architecture that simulates life but increasingly these interactions are starting to act like life, like some of the ingredients of life”. His environment breathes, shifts and moves in relationship to people walking through it, touching it, and sensing it. Microprocessors invest that environment with a primitive or insect-like intelligence like a coral reef or a great swarm.Iris van Herpen is intrigued by these kinds of possibilities for a future of fashion that might take on quite unimaginable shapes. Fashion that might be partly alive and growing, and, therefore, existing partly independent from us, which in turn allows for a new treatment by humans: instead of discarding the fashion after use, we cherish, value, and maintain it in its abilities to change constantly. Van Herpen’s translated this future vision in a collection that is highly complex and incredibly diverse in terms of shape, structure, and material. For one design, the ‘cathedral dress’ Van Herpen introduced a technique referred to as mammoth stereolithography which refers to a 3D printing method. This 3D printed process is built slice by slice from bottom to top, in a vessel of polymer that hardens when struck by a laser beam.

WILDERNESS EMBODIED - Nature is wild. Generated by powerful forces. Its proliferates by creating startling beauty.
Through her collaboration with artist Jolan van der Wiel, who has spent several years pondering the possibilities of magnetism, they have created dresses whose very forms are generated by the phenomenon of attraction and repulsion. Iris van Herpen draws equally upon the life force that pulses through the sculptures of David Altmejd. His wild organic forms derived from the regenerative processes of nature have inspired Wilderness Embodied. The human spirit is forged of this same vital energy, coursing and erupting through the limits of the body in such resplendent displays of extreme tradition or technology as piercings, scarification or surgery. This wild(er)ness of the human body, as unchecked as it is intimate, is one that the designer has sought to reveal the collection. With architect Isaie Bloch and Materialise she continues to develop 3D-printed dresses, which she was the first to present in both static and flexible forms. Her partnership with United Nude's Rem D. Koolhaas and Stratasys has led to shoes like tangled webs of tree-roots around the foot.

Meet Astua
"... And you think I am interesting?" was Astua's initial reaction to my request for a stranger portrait. I assured her that she indeed was.Tall and confident with great skin tone, stylish wavy hair and strong eyes - Astua was a potential subject from the very get-go. I confessed that I had actually noticed her a little earlier and had had actually followed them for a few hundred hoping to interrupt at the right time. She teased me "a stalker" but after a few quick few seconds she agreed to be a part of the project. Her companion Kyle patiently stood by as we snapped a few clicks based on the light - occasionally even clicking pics of the random shoot.
Astua with her rather unique look and poise is half Senegalese - half Ethiopian (have photographed quite a few Ethiopians on this project). She is new to the area, having lived in Florida. She mentioned she has lived in 5 countries (her family is in Canada). South Italy and Carribean are her favorite locations she has visited. She is a fashion designer - just having finished her studies. She also works at a organization that works with immigrants to teach them English. She likes reading especially books related to fashion designing. Her favorite memory was when her entire family (both sides) met for a get-together - was indeed a special memory she reminisced.
Thanks a lot Astua (hope I got the spelling right) being a part of the project (and your friend for the support). It was great photographing you and hope you like your pictures. Wishing you all the very best for your future.

MAGNETIC MOTION - For Magnetic Motion, Iris van Herpen explores the interplay of magnetic forces. By thoroughly examining the representation of dynamic forces of attraction and repulsion, the designer fuses nature and technology.
Earlier this year, van Herpen visited CERN the Large Hadron Collider, whose magnetic field exceeding that of earth’s by 20,000 times, provided inspiration for “Magnetic Motion”.
“I find beauty in the continual shaping of Chaos which clearly embodies the primordial power of nature’s performance,” says Van Herpen describing the essence of the collection.
Van Herpen stayed true to her spirit of bridging fashion and other disciplines by collaborating with the Canadian architect Philip Beesley, and the Dutch artist Jolan van der Wiel.
Beesley is a pioneer in responsive ‘living’ sculpture whose poetic works combine advanced computation, synthetic biology, and mechatronics engineering. Van der Wiel is an artist and craftsman whose work with magnetic tension has resulted in dynamic sculptures and installations that bring to mind the power of volcanic eruptions. Both artists strive to erase the boundaries between nature and technology in their work, which coincides with the direction of van Herpen’s creative aim.
The designer worked with techniques like injection molding and laser cutting on maze like structures, 3-D printing and intricate architectural handwork on dresses, jackets, trousers, skirts and blouses giving them dynamic shapes and surfaces that echo the body’s movement. The three dimensional nature and the layering of the garments give them volume.
Emphasizing light and shadow play, the minimalist color palette of black, white, midnight blue, and nude allows the designer to concentrate on the garments’ structure. Micro webs of lace veil and reveal the luminescent glow of crystal forms, while triacetate feathers punctuate the soft drapes and volumes. The controlled structure of the clothes is offset by the chaotic structure of the accessories, where, due to the nature of magnetic growth, no two items are alike. The shoes, belts, necklaces and clutches were “grown” using magnetic fields.

BIOPIRACY - In the recent past, patents on our genes have been purchased. Are we still the sole proprietor of our bodies? From this question arises a sense of arrested freedom in one's most intimate, solitary state. A mix of ready-to-wear and couture pieces is presented with artist Lawrence Malstaf -who specializes in the interaction between biology and physicality.
Models float in the air, embryonic, seemingly weightless and in a meditative suspended animation.
Metamorphosis is suggested through intricate enmeshing of materials. Imprisoned fire opal beads gleam through lacerated weaves, artificial fibers compose voluminous, architectural structures, the organic ripple of light on water.
A 3D printing collaboration with Julia Koerner fuses the artisanal with the technical to create a kinetic dress which dances as it amplifies bodily movement. Molded boots in collaboration with United Nude accelerate and reconfigure the silhouette.
Alternate version of Astua who I photographed few days back on the streets of Bethesda as a random stranger encounter.

Lily Elsie (8 April 1886 – 16 December 1962) was a popular English actress and singer during the Edwardian era, best known for her starring role in the hit London premiere of Franz Lehár's operetta The Merry Widow. She became one of the most photographed women of Edwardian era, due to her popularity and most obviously, her beauty.
She was born Elsie Hodder in Yorkshire and began acting as a child. Her mother was a dressmaker but her father was a theater worker. As she grew, she specialized in impersonating children on stage, and pantomime. This might be since she was painfully shy.
She was launched into stardom by the spectacular review of her performance in the Merry Widow (which also started a fad of huge hats with feathers). "[The famous designer] Lucile designed the costumes for Elsie in The Merry Widow (including the plumed hats that became an extraordinary fad) and thereafter used Elsie to promote her fashions, designing her personal clothes and costumes for several of her other shows. Lucile wrote, "That season was a very brilliant one, perhaps the most brilliant of the series which brought the social life of pre-war London to its peak. And just when it was at its zenith a new play was launched with a new actress, who set the whole town raving over her beauty..." (1)
Despite her beauty and fame, Lily despised the "male character" and showed no interest in them. She believed that men only treated women "tolerably when women behaved coldly toward them" (she was probably onto something!). Whatever men thought, women seemed not to envy her and were her most devoted admirers.
Lily married Major John Ian Bullough (1885–1936), the son of a wealthy textile manufacturer but it was not a success. She agreed with her husband's wish for her to leave the stage, but only for a few years.
She was often ill, was anemic and had several operations. She returned to theatre, touring and then at the Prince of Wales's Theatre in London in 1927 as Eileen Mayne in The Blue Train,
In 1930, Elsie's marriage ended in divorce as her health deteriorated further and she had fits of anger. She became a hypochondriac and spent much time in nursing homes and Swiss sanatoria*. She was diagnosed with serious psychological ailments and underwent brain surgery that reportedly improved her health. Her last years were spent at St. Andrew's Hospital in London.
Elsie died at St. Andrew's Hospital (demolished in 1973), Cricklewood, London, aged 76
* Sanatoria (pl. Sanatorium) were hotel-like convalescent centers, often in the high mountains or near mineral springs, geared toward those with tuberculosis, but with other ailments as well. The upscale ones were run like hotels or resorts, where people stayed, formed friendships and romances.
The sign in the window reads: Sonie's Creations "Fashion Designing House" and then underneath "SC Personal Computers are built in Canada with the customer in mind".
I have a lot to say here, so please read slowly, while you enjoy your morning cup of whatever ( and i owe you Day 306, but I didn't want to post this to the roulette group too late).

So, if you are keeping up with my stream, you know I asked for questions to be sent to me. See Day 300.
I love to play dress up, for fun of course, but also to disguise things about myself I don't like or things I wish I could change or things I am sick of seeing.
I was born into a family and raised by eclectic, hippie fashion designing parents who see suits and ties as much of a costume as wigs and pearls.
I live in a city where it is generally all about what is below the neck and not what is above it. Here, I have small tits and an enormous ass compared to your typical Los Angeles woman ( no offense to any LA size O woman). I don't even get noticed. Trust me on this.
As a child, kids would make fun of my red hair.
As a preteen, kids made fun of me for having boobs ( later, they learned to appreciate them, but I was the girl who freaked out when she had to wear a bra and would try and tape them down).
As a teenager, the boys always thought of me as their best bud. They would come to me to ask me how to go about getting one of my friends.
As an adult, I have learned that I don't have the physical traits I had always hoped for
...
but I am learning to love what I have and work on things I can change, in a natural and healthy way, while I can.
I don't have the type of job/career where I can dress or look the way I would want to.
I am pretty convinced that in my past life, I was a tatted up burlesque dancer.
So, with that being said, for the flickr roulette group, I bring you a list ( that some of you might have read, or not, on my profile, about me.
i tend to crave bagel dogs way too often.
i like to give gifts when they are least expected.
i used to do the LA weekly crossword puzzle every Sunday ( even though it comes out on Thursdays)...but sadly, that paper has now discontinued it.
i buy flowers for myself every Saturday.
i used to buy cigarettes by the carton every Friday ( but i quit).
i am a natural redhead, although, sometimes i dye it to be a different shade of red to fit my mood.
i taste great AND i am less filling.
my favorite jelly bean flavor is marshmallow.
i am anal about balancing my checkbook.
i don't just like the band Journey, i love them.
if i know when your birthday is, you can be sure i will think of you on that day every year for the rest of my life..and if we are still talking, i will call or write to wish you the happiest of birthdays.
i like guacamole, but i don't like avocados.
i know when to hold them. i know when to fold them. i know when to walk away. i know when to run.
i have never eaten a pb and j sandwich.
i might trust people too easily with information about my life, but i rarely trust someone with my heart.
i have a shopping problem i think (anything satin, scarves, ear muffs, and so much more).
i enjoy taking a bath/shower after a nice glass of something.
i was the first girl to wear a bra in my class at school and i hated it so much, i would take it off before i made it on campus.
i have been known to snort when i am laughing hard.
i never learned how to ride a bicycle.
i have no tattoos.
i have no piercings, not even my ears (*update: 6/3/07 i got my ears pierced for the first time)
i tend to pass out at the doctor's office.
i believe in learning from your mistakes. i make mistakes. sometimes over and over again. i am not always so good at life.
i took ballet, tap and jazz for 12 years.
i am currently taking piano lessons WITH an 8 year old child with autism.
i believe confidence is sexy; but vulnerability is sexier.
i am generous to a fault.
i like to wear the old school athletic socks with stripes.
i am not a carrie, a samantha, a charlette, or a miranda. i am simply jennifer.
i sing shamelessly in traffic.
i dance spontaneously in my house as long as i am alone.
i see something interesting in just about everything.
i find something good in just about everyone.
i wanted to be a string bean when i was a little girl. i wanted to be a math teacher when i was a bit older. i wanted to be a dancer when i was a pre-teen. i wanted to be who i was in high school. i wanted to be better at school when i was in college. i wanted to be exactly what i am now. i want to be a carpool mom one day.
i describe myself as mrs. garrett ( from the facts of life) with sass.
i will hold your hand when you are scared.
i am loyal and affectionate like a dog, and independent and free-thinking like a cat.
It was an unusually quiet evening at the Gabor compound, when the Misfits tuned into the ever so popular Lin-Z Pierce show to catch the latest news in Rock music. The top story of the hour was an exclusive report on Tony Cassini's Rock fashion competition and the details mentioned that the show would take place in Venice, Italy, by invitation only. Lin-Z continued that the top winners would appear in Cassini's ambitious Rock 'n' Roll music video! The contestants were chosen from all parts of the world. Though the American contestants weren't yet decided, the existing bands included the Limp Lizards, the Misfits, and Jem and the Holograms. Then, in a surprising appearance, Cassini himself announced his choice and decided to invite both the Misfits and Jem and the Holograms to compete in Venice! After flicking the off-switch on the television, Pizzazz turned to Roxy and Stormer in anger. She couldn't understand how the Holograms stood a riverboats chance down Niagara of winning, since the Misfits had famed designer, Bobby Stark, as their stylist, and the Holograms had only Shana. Roxy agreed and decided to call Shana over the phone to shake her up with Pizzazz and Stormer joining in on their end. Shana, being the respectful darling that she is, told Roxy to cram it, and banged the phone down on its receiver! The next morning, the Misfits touched down in Italy and quickly began with a plan to steal Shana's clothing designs, and brought along Zipper to provide extra manpower by disguising himself as an oarsman to escort Shana across the water long enough to snatch her fashions! Things got out of hand during the ride and the gondola flipped over while Zipper leapfrogged from boat to boat with her sketches in hand! Pizzazz and her girls quickly pulled up in a speedboat to assist him in his escape, but as Zipper landed inside of the boat, the long capsule holding Shana's designs collided with the clutch, sending the speedboat flying across the Venetian lagoon and directly into the star designer, who was still standing stranded in her boat! Then, by a miracle, the speedboat swerved around her as the Misfits laughed while speeding away! Moments later, at Countess Danielle du Voisin's palazzo, Shana explained to her that she had lost her trunk with her fashions. While Jem, Kimber and Aja assisted her with drying off, an oarsman entered into the room with her designer trunk and set it down in the middle of the room. With the worst behind her, Shana took a huge sigh of relief as she realized that everything was back on track. Then suddenly, they heard something crashing around inside the valuable trunk and quickly investigated. As they gathered closer, a voice chirped out from inside, then out popped their foster daughter, Ashley, who had smuggled herself inside of the trunk to join them on their trip! Ashley revealed to the group that she had switched capsules back at Starlight Mansion, substituting her own designs with the sketches that were in Shana's possession from the start. It turned out that Zipper stole Ashley's designs instead LOL! Meanwhile, in the hotel room, Pizzazz cracked open the long cylindrical capsule only to discover Ashley's designs and cackled while criticizing Eric for paying Zipper a flat fee for absolutely nothing. The next day, the Misfits click-clacked into a ritzy shoe store where Shana and Ashley happened to be shopping for heels and confronted the famous drummer while kicking over boxes of shoes and cavorting wildly with several salesmen, all with the false narrative that Pizzazz’s a “designing woman”, and has what it takes to make “her own” breaks. After purchasing a few boxes of glossy, designer pumps, the Misfits made their point very clear, then walked out the department store and slammed the door behind them. Back at the hotel, Shana, Jem, Kimber and Aja decided to check in on her designs, so they approached her room and opened the door only to discover that her costumes were gone! Zipper, operating on his second wind, was at it again by opting to lower himself into Shana's room through the skylight with a grappling hook to steal the actual outfits for the competition! Looking to profit from Shana's hard work, Zipper arrived at Eric's villa and presented all four suits to the Misfits, but Pizzazz wasn't pleased with the colors and demanded a seamstress to dye the outfits black. Just outside of Eric's villa stood Jem and the Holograms poised and prepared for action. Then Jem summoned Synergy to transform her into a seamstress so she could blend in and nab their belongings from the miserable Misfits. Once inside, Jem rescued all four garments and made a break for the servants stairs, but Eric caught her as she reached the balcony to toss the outfits down to the Holograms who were just under the window in high alert! The commotion on the balcony caught the attention of Pizzazz, Roxy and Stormer, so Jem and her team fled on foot towards the Rialto Bridge while they were chased by the wrathful shock-rockers. Furious and looking to even the score, Pizzazz moved in closer to sink her hooks into a jacket that Kimber was holding and the two battled for ownership. The war reached the top of the Rialto Bridge and continued with Pizzazz switching over to Aja, while Roxy attacked Kimber, and Stormer threw down with Shana AND Jem! There they all were, prestigious, award-winnin', record-breakin', chart-toppin' professional recording artists, locked together in mortal combat. Due to the hardcore struggle (and their high heels), the Misfits were thrown off balance and overboard while hanging onto each article of clothing for dear life! Pizzazz, the “fearless” leader of the group, shrieked out for someone, ANYONE to help, but the fabric for each outfit began to deteriorate. Now preparing for the big splash, the Misfits tried pulling themselves up to safety, but the clothing continued to separate and the rockers became airborne while departing for the water! With his speedboat engine racing, Zipper, who firmly believed that one hand washes the other, rushed in like Galahad to save them from the dip. Still standing at the top of the bridge, the Holograms got in the last word, when Kimber exclaimed that they nearly got killed just to rip them off! Unconcerned about the incident, the Misfits sped away in triumph and felt quite satisfied about ruining the outfits...but little did they know, Synergy had Shana's designs stored in her memory bank from the very beginning. That night, at the Rock fashion contest, the Misfits strolled in and glided towards center stage with conviction. Then, in a flash, Ashley noticed Shana's creations and informed Danielle that they were stolen by the Misfits. While on stage working up a spectacle, the three thieves posed with full confidence. Then suddenly, in a brief moment of ego-trippin', Pizzazz stepped out of character and turned to ask a judge whether they're hot or HOT! Backstage behind the curtain, the Holograms, with the help of Synergy, prepared for their entrance by morphing into their high-styled fashions, and then they ran on stage and struck a pose for the audience. During the announcement, Roxy began spewing acid at Shana as the rightful winners from America, but the judges had another group from America in mind—Jem and the Holograms! Shana received more exciting news from Mr. Cassini who mentioned that she had earned two designing credits on his Rock 'n' Roll fashion video, one for Jem and the Holograms' costumes, and one for the Misfits. Still down, but certainly not out, a delusional Pizzazz howled that Shana didn't deserve credit for her own designs, and that it was her idea to make the material black! The disturbance fell on deaf ears as Tony Cassini set her straight by explaining that, if the costumes appeared in HIS video, then Shana, the designer/creator, would indeed receive full credit. After experiencing a difficult time gulping for air, and struggling to clear the lump in her throat, Pizzazz was left standing “In Stitches”, and suffered one harsh lesson in high-fashion: Never risk humiliation and/or DEATH by fighting over clothes that aren't yours to begin with! Why, in the immortal words of Pizzazz herself: “The world belongs to the major movers, the ones who keep up a relentless pace. If you ain't up to the fast maneuvers, you're gonna wind up in second place. You're gonna wind up with egg on your face.” BLOOP!
This marks the third Pizzazz doll from Integrity Toys. Well, actually, this marks the fourth Pizzazz doll if you're counting the quick-switch head provided for this particular set. I will be the first to admit that I wasn't too thrilled with the idea of Integrity rereleasing all four dolls, which is why it has taken me a few months to finally make up my mind on whether or not I really needed them to complete my collection. As time went by, I began to change my mindset and I finally decided that I will let it slide this time around and snag all four, anyway. Those who are aware of my undying love for my Jem collection know that I really adore the Phyllis Gabor dolls. This trash-talkin', cash-stalkin', flashy-walkin' tyrant is absolutely fearless and bigger than life on the show, but such a helpless lil' feline in doll form. I just think that it's so cool to actually hold the Queen of Saturday Morning Animation in the palm of your hands literally! Everything looks great with this set. And how cool is it that we get the unreleased ‘88 head/makeup to own and enjoy?! I placed this doll and the extra head in the light for a second and noticed the difference between this version vs past editions, and I concluded that DW Pizzazz has such a lovely distinctive hue of neon green hair! It's obvious that Integrity came equipped with several new ideas this time around. I like her purple paint she purchased, in “Sucker Punch!”, which starts on her forehead and drives downward along the sides of her nose, then surrounds both eyes! There's a faint outline of shimmery light “Crusin' for a Bruisin'” violet shadow that trails around the purple paint, and it also shows up on her eyelids. For this special occasion, instead of using her white paint for highlighter, she decided to create two thin V-shaped designs on the areas of her eyebrows. She's also wiped away the violet lines from her cheeks and replaced them with two long, yellow triangular shapes on each side. Pizzazz piled on her black “Danger Zone” eyeliner and “ill-Tempered Tarantula” mascara to electrify her blue eyes, giving her enemies that serious, no nonsense-type glare she's most famous for! Originally, I didn't care for the color of her lips and nails, but considering her Japan skin tone, I'm now in love with her orange “Killjoy” lipstick! The color kinda makes her appear more happy, more inviting and exciting lol. There's an ample amount of accessories to enjoy, all the finest threads needed to fill the closet in her dressing room, and a top compartment to hold her heels, jewelry, and filthy stash of cash! Always thinking outside the box, Ms. Gabor decided to pair up her black sleeveless dress with an oversized orange dress shirt. She then decided to top it off with her expensive, knee-high designer heel-boots and huge matching purple belt! This outfit is one serious flashy hit, but in all actuality, it's the black and white animal-print dress that truly epitomizes the word FASHION! Now, if we are talking OUTFITS and FASHIONS from the show, then I could go on for hours with my picks...
My first pick would have to be her glittery, light gray jumpsuit with the black and white animal-print minidress, from “The Talent Search, Part One.” I have a deep desire for that outfit!
Second, the black leather jacket/miniskirt combo, from “The Music Awards, Part One.” A true must-have!
Third, her unique tan and black ensemble with matching black hat as depicted in the beginning of “In Search of the Stolen Album”...one of my all-time favorite outfits, and another must-have on my list!
Forth, and probably the most interesting of the bunch, a “Welcome to the Jungle” gift set with all four Misfits, wild makeup, original outfits and accessories. Just my opinion, but we really need more Misfits fashions from the music video segments.
Lastly, I'll take it way back to Season One, when she FIRST appeared in her yellow jumpsuit, black headband, and number fkin' 1 earrings! That trendy jumper is what I like to call the “B***h, look at me! I'm casual, but bad” outfit lol.
This gift set is everything it appears to be, and I am more than satisfied with both new Pizzi's! 💚
Part of an overdue art trade with Rage these are her two characters Cane and Mazzy
I actually drew this concept first but I returned to it later and started tinkering with it. For instance I desaturated Cane's jacket and it just kinda looked better black so I kept it that way ^_^"
Also I want to mention that in my art trades while I keep the main colors I often mess with the outfit design a little. Please understand this is not out of disrespect but just ....well I kinda like a little fashion designing ^_^"
wow I always wondered if a guy could say that and still escape with their masculinity intact XDD oh well hope you like it Rage ^_^

There wasn't much to watch on the tube during that warm September's night other than a marathon of “Oldies but Goodies” on MTV. Granted, the Pop stars adored the music of Duran Duran, Michael Jackson and Rick Springfield, but the omission of Stevie Nicks was a deal breaker. So Kimber joined the Starlight girls in an evening of slapstick comedy as they gathered together to watch Nickelodeon. Then 8:00 rolled around and the girls clicked the remote to watch 24 hours of video power on VTV. Within seconds of viewing the show, word traveled through the television speaker from Lin-Z of a Rock fashion competition in Venice, Italy, and she reported the full list of requirements and credentials. Then her host, the promoter of the event, Tony Cassini, revealed his top two picks to compete. When Jem and the Holograms discovered that they were one of two bands chosen, they nearly flipped the couch with excitement! Lin-Z went on to mention that the contest was Shana Elmsford's opportunity to demonstrate her fashion-designing expertise. Minutes later, the pressure from the announcement consumed the bronzed beauty as she sat still at her drafting table in her bedroom questioning her capabilities and whether she was good enough to exceed the expectations for a worldwide competition. Kimber and Aja walked in to check on their best friend, and Jerrica followed with a reminder of how amazing of an artist she's been to their group, and that a successful collection of clothing depends on the mood of the model and designer. Now, with the worst of her worries behind her, Shana was prepared to bring her A-game to Italy! A few neighborhoods over, up the stone walkway of Gabor Mansion sat the Misfits who, after watching Friday the 13, Part 6, were already tuned into Lin-Z's report and practically snubbed their own victory. It wasn't that Pizzazz didn't care, she just knew that there would be a lot of talent involved, and scoffed at the thought of creating her own work. So she smuggled Zipper into Venice where he accepted a small cash bonus to help the Misfits with stealing Shana's sketches, which he did twice throughout the trip! After one failed attempt, he came through the second time with flying colors, and the Misfits had what they needed to create their own version of her creations. To spruce up the wardrobe with her own personal touch, Pizzazz decided she would dye the bright material black to match their rock-star personas. Ms. Elmsford wasn't going to stand for any funny business, and she tried all she possibly could to rescue her work, eventually hightailing it to the Misfits' hotel with Jem, Kimber and Aja to confront everyone involved! A tornado of shredded clothing passed through as the Misfits noticed their rivals, and out broke an all-new battle of fabric with a lengthy foot chase to the top of the Rialto Bridge, some tug of war, lots of screaming, clawing, fighting and thieving, all leading up to Jem and the Holograms' victory in the Rock fashion contest, and the Misfits' disgraceful reputation as a colossal international flop!
Season One's “In Stitches” episode has to be one of my favorites by reason of my love for Shana, and for fashion! The animation is also an important factor, and it started to look absolutely flawless around this time in the show. Right now, I'm finding it difficult to take my eyes off this set. It's unbelievable! Almost too much for words. Just like the “Who is He Kissing” gift set, we have another decorative box that's used to house both dolls, and an awesome slipcover to hold it all together. For this duet gift set, Integrity's created a turquoise blue cover that resembles a strip of fabric with a pair of shears cutting through, “Jem and the Holograms” on one side, and “In Stitches” on the other in purple font. As I lift the lid to the box, I'm thrown back by the appearance of both dolls! A double-headed stage light is shining down on both characters and their slammin' outfits, so I'll zoom in on Jem first and start with her newly styled hair. One startling fact is that she's rid herself of her straight, sharp-layered bouffant and has made a conscious decision to use a mild perm to give herself long pink locks with massive curl and bounce! Her product pictures were so on point with her appearance in person, and I never once doubted the outcome. The curly/wavy style was never even considered an option in the show, and she's only ever had pin-straight hair as a fashion doll, so the new hair pattern only boosts the authenticity of this version and sets her on a pedestal in the collection! Jem's also wearing a curly, more fuller set of bangs that lay overtop her brown eyebrows and pink monochromatic eyeshadow which she purchased in “Sweet Surrender”, and it covers the entire area of her eyelids and brow bones. Then, in typical Jem tradition, she circles the shadow around under her lash lines. The one-toned shadow she uses also matches both her pink lined lips coated in “Like, Whatever!” And her fingernails are neatly painted with “Totally Tubular” nail polish. Also, her black “Party Over Here” eyeliner is simple and runs neatly around the shape of her eyes without flying off track. This version of Jem has a side-eyed stare with blue feathery-soft eyelashes that are teased with “Sassy Superstar” mascara, and she flutters them at Pizzazz as her casual way of telling her to kiss off! The outfit magnetized me right from the start. I'm impressed at how identical it looks to the show! Both her long shiny lavender jacket with pockets and shiny blue skinny-pants were created with the same fabric, and turned out exceedingly well. She wears a short yellow sleeveless minidress under her jacket and it's made with a scratchy dull-like material, not bad at all, just less shine to it. The outfit brightens back up again with her matching blue belt with golden chrome lining and a circular buckle. I haven't seen such a stylish belt in the collection since Video Montgomery's. I also never thought Jem would get the grand treatment with her high heels, at least not like the pair she has with this set. THEY'RE FANTASTIC! The style takes my breath away. I swear, Jem's shoe collection just shot through the roof with these pink imported heels. Could they be any cuter?! Just look at the craftsmanship on the pink insoles, the tan outsoles, and that classic cut on both sides separating the toe area from the heel. YEOW! And I love how she's barefooted with only her tan skin peeking out from between the vibrant pink. She loves flashing her red star-shaped earrings for fun, making Pizzazz jealous and leaving her to question their power. Too bad because she'll never know the truth, and it's none of her business anyway! Jem's the type of fashionista who has to match her outfit with her accessories, so you have to assume her wireless microphone to have a lavender and golden finish on it, just as her jacket and hot belt. And after a brief scuffle with Pizzazz over Shana's sketches, she's managed to strut away with two important pieces—far from Pizzi's unfinished version—and she will protect both mini drawings with her life! Starlight Music's melodist is dressed to impress. She's comfy, adrenalized, and ready to rock Venice AGAIN!
Who's that sweepin' through the night sky with a trail of neon green exhaust shootin' from her broom, and her silhouette seared into the full moon? Why, it's Misfits Music's wicked witch of Rock 'n' Roll, Phyllis “Pizzazz” Gabor! The biggest ball-breaker on the West Coast, Pizzi holds herself at a high standard and swaggers down the avenue with her “don't-f**k-with-me” attitude. She's the enforcer of violence and intimidation—standing shoulder to shoulder with some of the burliest men alive and wrestling around with them for sport—and if she can't handle you alone, she calls on her gang the Misfits to take you down like a group of bloodthirsty tigers! To cross her path is like being engulfed in fire and brimstone, and it's important to have an escape route because once she welcomes you to the jungle to rumble, there's NO turnin' back. She's careless, selfish, underhanded, unable to be swayed or played, and you would have to rise at the crack of dawn to pull one over on her. She's Pizzi G!—like it or not. Sheesh! When I really stop to think about it, she's pure evil lol. I'm real big on respect, fairness, right/wrong, simply treating others the way you would want to be treated; it's been that way for as far back as I can remember. So when I used to watch the show during its run I'd always cringe at the Misfits' behavior, and wondered why Jem hardly ever fought back. Seriously, IT IRKED ME TO THE MAX! But, hey, in Pizzi's defense, she's had a tough childhood as was explained in her backstory, and that's the ONLY THING which saves her from me writing her off completely lol. Nah, I'll admit she's actually funny in the show! Her words have a certain flow that I love. I also get a thrill out of her sudden outbursts of anger when she screams and throws temper tantrums lol. My goodness, is it possible for someone to be angry throughout every waking moment of their existence? Surely she has at least one shred of decency within her body?! I'm almost certain that, under all that war paint, there's a mellow, upstanding human being waiting to appear. I think I'm getting a little ahead of myself lol. Anyway, she's here in doll form and I've now seen the greenlight lol. No doubt she belongs to a group of degenerates, but none of that matters when it comes to her fashion doll. “In Stitches” Pizzazz is positively perfect! There's not one blemish or a strand of hair out of place. While I'm on the subject of hair, I must commend Integrity on their decision to give her a thicker mane compared to her first wave edition. It's a pinch longer in length, her bangs are fuller, and boy is it easier to style. I'm loving the green color as well! It's almost hard to believe that she was born with green hair, but, in the world of Jem, anything's possible...just ask Purple People Eater, Clash Montgomery lol! As I investigate her insane makeup I begin to slowly fight back the possession of its hypnotic allure. You don't need to hold her close to your face or use a microscope to view the details of her cosmetics because the only thing that's required is a quick observation at eye level, and BIG BAM BOOM, it's all right there. She's a tigress on the loose, a creature on the prowl, and she's gettin' ready to HOOOWL! I know that the mere thought of her rockin' a face full of paint that resembles Twisted Sister may sound a bit scary, but the wild designs accent her skin tone with a playful tease, never once appearing to be unpleasant or unwelcoming. After all, this is the lead singer of the Misfits we're talking about here. Hell, if she can't glam up her face with funky designs while demanding respect at the same time, then who can?! She's totally snatched with purple lines, in “Kingdom of Terror”, that curve downward from the center of her forehead and veer off outward to where her eyebrows should be! Pizzi then added a visible amount of white highlighter on her brow bone areas, in “Ghost Town”, and dragged it upwards to the tips of her lash paint. Feelin' frisky with her work, she decided to confine the highlighter with “Paralyzing Pink” eyeshadow that rides across her eyelids, outwards to the tips of the purple and white paint, and then back around again, settling along the entire length of her bottom lash lines! Boy, oh f**kin' boy, I love my angry, green-haired rebel lol! She looks as though she just won a fight with a can of light purple paint, resulting in a single scratch mark downward on both sides of her cheeks. I really have to take a minute to give her black eyeliner special recognition. For starters, it comes in “Flatlined”, it has a slightly different design than her first edition, and looks bolder and thicker! The liquid liner shoots across her top lash lines and makes a sharp turn backwards with a slight dip, and then races along the remainder of her bottom lash lines. There is danger in her eyes! Her emerald green pupils move in on her prey. If Jem's smart, she'd keep out of her way because Pizzi's throwin' her a side-eyed stare that could turn her to stone. I'm loving her lips, too! They're covered with dark pink “Good Girl Gone Bad” lipstick, lined with red “Thrill Seeker” lip liner, and coated with “Slippery Vertigo” lipgloss. Pizzazz is proud to wear an outfit that was never her brainchild to begin with, but she wears it well, so I suppose that's all that matters. The long shiny black jacket is a true stunner, and comes fully equipped with left/right side pockets. She assumes since she dyed it black, it's hers, and if there's one thing I know for a fact, it's that you simply DO NOT argue with Pizzi G! Ms. Gabor has paired the color of the jacket with a glossy purple sleeveless minidress, and it too looks great. You really do have to bow with respect to her shiny red skinny-pants with light purple tiger-print designs. I mean it when I say she's a fashion guru in her own right! She even created a shiny red neck choker with golden circular studs to match her damn pants. But did she halt there? HELL NO! Accessories are her forte, and nothing brings her more joy than to brag and flaunt her style in front of Jem as she's doing right now with her matching black belt with golden chrome lining and a circular buckle. She then bawls up both fists, extends her arms pointed at Jem, and gives her an up-close-and-personal view at the details to her golden gloves, which are separated into 2 pieces: a pair of long shiny golden cuffs that cover her wrists, and a set of golden chrome hands that are interchange! And she stokes the flames of her fierce fashions with a pair of purple hoop earrings that match her glossy minidress. The Misfits' head mistress is burnin' up with unbridled desire, and seeking every strategic move in the book to grab the attention of Rio, so she slipped into her pair of shiny black heels with their blood red insoles and black outsoles to turn him on. Unlike Jem's heels, Pizzazz's were imported in glossy black with a classic cut only on the inner side, separating the toe area from the heel, and then covering the outer area in traditional style! As I said before, this rock 'n' roller has an eye for mixing and matching accessories, and would never pass up the chance to outshine another woman with her flashy sense of style, as she's proven here with her shiny red/golden wireless microphone that she personally created to match her pants and belt! Modern music's Rock and Pop genres have melded together for the “In Stitches” duet gift set, offering a bigger bang for your buck, and Pizzazz and Jem the opportunity to join forces in partnership. But, at the end of the day, Pizzi's still a Misfit, so, of course, she couldn't resist stirring up a pot of mischief by stealing a sketch from Jem that belongs to Shana and concealing the mini drawing inside her accessories compartment. Whatever you do, don't ask her why because she's not the least bit ashamed. Damn thief lol!
Kudos to Integrity Toys' success in bringing this gift set together! Of course, my comment was not meant to suggest that Jem and Pizzazz are good friends or confidants, but it's refreshing to see them in close proximity of each other. Early in the series, Pizzi labeled herself the “Queen of Rock 'n' Roll”, and even wrote/recorded a hit song to make her message clear. Rarely is she credible, but, for once, she's absolutely right, seeing as how Jem's more Pop-oriented than hard-edged Rock! With all things considered—and I do mean ALL THINGS—I gladly give my stamp of approval to this set! In my opinion, there are no winners here, for neither singer outshines the other. The scuttlebutt is that both entertainers think they're better than the other—and that may very well be the truth on the charts—but if the banter has anything to do with this gift set, then the position of QUEEN is a title they both share! 👑

PERSONAL FUN FACT: I simply don't know that there are words to describe how much these outfits took my breath away. I was intrigued by Yasmin's design the moment she was released. It was unexpected--usually Yasmin's signature look is something bohemian/hippie like. But these ensembles made Yasmina appear business chic. Although one would expect the Collector Bratz to have more traditional styling, I like that they are different. Why have more of the same?!!! Honestly all of these pieces look like the kind of thing a real person would wear...a very stylish one that is. Everything about them is extra luxurious, down to the accessories. My favorite piece is probably the long jacket. I don't own anything like it in my collection thus far, and that's saying something as I have oodles of Bratz clothes. It's very fitted, and if it were styled differently, it could be worn on a detective (Yasmin Holmes anyone?!!). I thought that the lace was attached to the jacket, as trim. However, when I went to undress my doll, I realized that the lace was part of the bell sleeves of her top!!! This top is far more impressive when you see the entire thing. I love the careful consideration into how everything would look when layered together. My only trouble is that the sleeves like to roll up Yasmin's arms when I put her jacket on. So I have to delicately slip her thumbs through the lace, to ensure that the sleeves will stay in place. Her brown skirt reminds me of something from the 2003 Style It! collection, only updated for 2018. It's a very classic piece, and I can definitely envision any Yasmin doll wearing it. As for her pin striped extra outfit, it looks very presidential. Yasmin could wear it in the office for her fashion designing job, or she could run in the election! I have to say, I LOVE this outfit almost as much as the main one. Both pairs of the shoes are also unique. But hands down, the plum colored flocked ones are my favorites. I've never seen anything like them, and they blend seamlessly with her velvet socks that have lace trim. The clothes themselves are elegant, but when you pair them with the shoes and accessories, that brings Yasmin's look to the next level! MGA also included in a few extra accessories, like a fancy golden makeup palette, some glamorous golden earrings, a very chic choker, a faux leather pageboy cap (very Bratz), and this purse which could dual as some kind of business bag.

This picture is #94 in the 100 Strangers project.
Recently on a short vacation to India - had a 5 hour stopover in Dubai. Decided to use some of the time to see if I could find some interesting strangers for the project. Had two false starts - for different reasons. The first was a hijab clad lady with fantastic eyes -who I approached after much hesitation. Though she politely declined due to cultural reasons, she was extremely friendly through the interaction. Tanya who I met at a perfume store immediately after actually agreed for quick few pictures (albeit with a little initial surprise) . However the less than ideal light conditions within the airport shops didn't help - I promised Tanya I would not post her pic if it did not do justice to how she actually looked - and since I don't think she would like how the pic actually turned out I am not posting it. Soon after that I met Hauwa who was walking close by - and her strong personality and her traditional attire caught my attention. After a quick introduction, Hauwa agreed to a few quick photographs. Accompanied by her friend we walked towards the windows to get in some natural light and quickly got a few pictures. Again the lighting in the area was not great (one of the reasons for the B/W) but I am still grateful to the lady for her patience.
Hauwa is from Nigeria where she is engaged with fashion designing and runs garments business in Nigeria. She was visiting Dubai related to the same to make some purchases (appeared to be a frequent visitor). She also loves cooking especially baking and is looking to expand her business in that area too.
Thanks a lot for your time Hauwa. It was nice meeting you and I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to do these pictures, and wish you a lot of success for the future

Yves Saint Laurent was a brilliant designer.
I don't have a single high fashion item in my closet, but I very much appreciate the art that goes into fashion designing. Understanding fabric and cut and how that works within the line of the human body is beyond my capabilities. I tend to highly admire those minds that I just can not begin to jump into.
I chose Laurent to honor for my We're Here - Art Parody shot. Plus, he and I had the same hair and glasses. He just had a better jawline.

Lately, it has been a little difficult to get out of work and go stranger-hunting. The thing about outdoor lighting that I like is that there is a very brief window of say, 30-45 minutes, when the sun is almost setting, but not quite, when people are neither wearing sunglasses nor squinting. Even when I do step out that these times, most people are headed home from work and are either hungry, on the phone, or both. Mhmm. Anyway, I've whined enough about it.
Meet Haruka! I walked past her once. She was enjoying an ice cream cone by the sidewalk. By the way, Big John's in downtown Berkeley have amazing $1 scoops (with waffle cones for an extra $0.65). I did not want to bother her simply because I do not like being bothered while I'm working on my ice cream. But then again, I did not want her to finish the ice cream and walk away because then, I would look like an idiot (or worse) chasing after her. So I did what had to be done, i.e. I apologized for making her stop eating her ice cream. When I asked her if I could take her portrait for the 100Strangers project, she got very excited and handed her ice cream (chocolate-vanilla, I think, or maybe coffee-cream) to what seemed to me to be her mom, adjusted her hair and was ready in a flash. We took a couple of pictures and she was very happy with the result.
Haruka is originally from Osaka, Japan. She wants to go to college to study fashion designing.
This is Portrait #26 in my 100 Strangers project. Please visit the 100strangers group page on Flickr www.flickr.com/groups/100strangers/ and check out some amazing portraits by some very talented photographers.
