One of my all time favorites and one that started my focus on Italian motorcycle items back in 1996. The 50th anniversary of the Vespa Scooter. The stamp is based on a poster from the 1950's. Very cool stamp.

Last weekend the motorcycle section of the Vintage Car Club of NZ ran a reliability trial and invited the Canterbury Classic Trials group to put on a demonstration and also take part in their event. The trials area also attracted members from the Vintage Club on suitable machines who tried the obstacles. These were largely man-made and included pallets (Thanks Palletmakers in ChCh), fence posts, tyres, a bank, tree stump, and logs. Due to the range of machines lined up for the reliability trial these sections were easier and included tight turns, tree roots, and banks. As well as trials bikes other contenders included trail bikes, 1970’s Vespa and Honda scooters, 1960's Royal Enfield and BMW motorcycles , 1937 Ariel, 1927 AJS, 1924 Triumph, as well as a Velosolex. A laid back and fun day mixing two groups both interested in classic motorcycles. Enjoy the photos.

Queens Birthday Weekend saw Pioneer Motorcycle Club run the 76th edition of the Kaikoura 3 Day trial. The Club was rewarded with a large entry of 93 riders from across New Zealand including 5 Sidechairs, 9 Twin Shocks, 9 Women, and 8 Junior riders. Day 1 was at Birches Road south of Kaikoura featuring creek sections, grassy sections and mud. Considering it is June the weather was warm with no frost. A frost did greet us for Day 2 at Dairy Flat reached after travelling a short distance along the Inland Road. Easier sections on the second day combined with a longer loop saw many happy faces. Day 3 was again fine with no frost for the last day at Mt Fyffe. For the upper grades the creek sections were the most challenging day. It was great to have three fine and warm days for Kaikoura after having some rain on the last day last year. Prize giving was held at the Whaler in Kaikoura before everyone departed for home. Overall winner of Expert was Jason Baker with a well deserved win. Thanks to everyone who travelled to the event. The Club has had some great feedback, and looks forward to hosting you all again next year. Enjoy Lynette's photos.
Rounds 3 & 4 of the 2022 South Island Trials Championship were held near Christchurch over the weekend of 21 & 22 August.
Round 3 was held in greasy conditions at Western Valley. The day started with light drizzle which turned to rain just after riders started. Thankfully this soon gave way to sunshine and the afternoon was warm. The sections were all based in and around the creek with slippery rocks, or slippery climbs. Scores ranged from 21 to 93 for the day dependent on the class ridden. The Mini riders were also in action with the riders enjoying the open sections with chances to lift their front wheels over some of the obstacles.
Round 4 was held a Kiatuna Valley and was generally drier. The weather was sunny and warm, but riders were still challenged with creek sections and the higher grades had some third gear climbs. Scores were a little higher for the day with the lowest starting at 30 and three riders making 3 digits. One, Archer Pascoe, riding Intermediate in his first trial had the misfortune of breaking the frame on his Beta so had to take 5’s for the remainder of his last round. This was an unlucky finish to a good ride. The Mini riders were also in action again with the sections being tighter and more technical.
Overall Jules took out both days in Expert as the only rider on the orange line. Brad Hibbs was second riding the red line, with David Trewin third, only 4 points behind after the weekend. After day 1 the points were very tight at the top of Intermediate with six riders within 5 points. After day 2 Glenn Smith emerged the winner, with John Ross 4 points behind and Gareth Wadsworth third only 2 points adrift. In Sportsman Shane Brons outclassed the field on Sunday including a lap of 1 to take the Sportsman class, with Ross Bristol second and Ashley Duncan a close third. In Clubman Gavin Fox took out the weekend with Keith Ruthven only 1 point behind in second. Christine Thompson took Third. A great weekend with challenging, but excellent sections. Special thanks to Derek Scott and Paul Mountstevens and the section setting teams they led, Derek Scott and Peter Hosking for the work they did leading up to, and during the event, and to the observers who gave up their weekend, as without them the event could not run. Lastly thanks to all the competitors who took part whether local riders or those who travelled some distance to support this event.
Don’t forget the New Zealand Champs in Alexandra at Labour weekend. The Southern Trails Group are working hard on the event already. They will have classes for every rider and want to achieve an entry of 100. Please support them, as this is one of the best venues to ride in NZ.

The 78th Kaikoura Three Day Trial was held on the traditional date in June, now named King’s Birthday Weekend. 76 solo entrants and 7 sidecars tackled the sections at a different property each day.
The first day was at Birches Road, Oaro, in fine weather with no frost. 3 laps of 12 sections, with no deep mud this year, and just a couple of sections in my grade that I couldn’t clean. Day 2 was held at Dairy Flat off the Inland Kaikoura Road, with fine weather and again no frost. A longer loop today with 4 laps of 10 sections. Only one tricky section in my grade, so points were low.
Sunday night saw us congregate at the Whaler Hotel for a meal and presentation to David Chambers who was riding at his 50th Kaikoura event. A great achievement and no doubt he will notch up a few more.
Overnight some periods of heavy rain could be heard on the roof of our accommodation, however this reduced to just some occasional light rain showers once we got to the venue. Half a dozen sections in the creek, with 3 laps of 12 sections in total. Some higher scores on this last day, but easier sections in our grade this year compared to previous.
Then to prize giving before disbursing for home. The event is supported by riders throughout New Zealand with a large number travelling from the North Island as well as regular competitors from across the full length of the South Island. A notable point is the number of families taking part with two and even three generations competing at the event. The large field of 10 Junior riders completed the same sections and loops as senior riders on all days. Seeing this number of Juniors completing the weekend, and their riding skills is great for the future of the sport.
The placings for each class are on the Pioneer Website. Stand out rides were Finn Pearce riding the red line and looking great on the bike. Each time I see him his riding has improved and he must surely be a future champion. A great ride also by Stuart Lawton on a 70’s Twin Shock TY taking first in Twin Shock, but also first in Intermediate. The Sidecar classes also saw some new pairings and new outfits this year. Stand out ride must be John Lawton who, with Conner Newton in the chair both had large smiles all weekend.
The 2020 Marlborough Motorcycles New Zealand Trials Championship was held over Labour Weekend using three different properties on Banks Peninsula near Christchurch. Challenging sections and hot weather on the first two days were followed by challenging sections and cool, and at times damp, weather on the third day. 68 riders entered which included 13 mini riders. This was the second year mini riders had been included riding on separate sections, the riders demonstrated some excellent skills on tricky sections and variable terrain. Enjoy the photos
Another great day of classic trials in Canterbury, New Zealand as last weekend Travis hosted our trial at his property in North Loburn. A warm day and great sections helped the large turnout enjoy the day. Thanks to Brent and Shirley for putting the sections in and Peter for the BBQ. The slippery parking area nabbed a few fives at the end of the day as vehicles tried to leave. Perhaps we should have added that to riders scores. Kendall had the chair out after the trial and had a couple of different passengers. Special mention to Paul who rode clean all day and to Dick who celebrated his birthday on Monday. The 78th Kaikoura Three Day Trial was held on the traditional date in June, now named King’s Birthday Weekend. 76 solo entrants and 7 sidecars tackled the sections at a different property each day.
The first day was at Birches Road, Oaro, in fine weather with no frost. 3 laps of 12 sections, with no deep mud this year, and just a couple of sections in my grade that I couldn’t clean. Day 2 was held at Dairy Flat off the Inland Kaikoura Road, with fine weather and again no frost. A longer loop today with 4 laps of 10 sections. Only one tricky section in my grade, so points were low.
Sunday night saw us congregate at the Whaler Hotel for a meal and presentation to David Chambers who was riding at his 50th Kaikoura event. A great achievement and no doubt he will notch up a few more.
Overnight some periods of heavy rain could be heard on the roof of our accommodation, however this reduced to just some occasional light rain showers once we got to the venue. Half a dozen sections in the creek, with 3 laps of 12 sections in total. Some higher scores on this last day, but easier sections in our grade this year compared to previous.
Then to prize giving before disbursing for home. The event is supported by riders throughout New Zealand with a large number travelling from the North Island as well as regular competitors from across the full length of the South Island. A notable point is the number of families taking part with two and even three generations competing at the event. The large field of 10 Junior riders completed the same sections and loops as senior riders on all days. Seeing this number of Juniors completing the weekend, and their riding skills is great for the future of the sport.
The placings for each class are on the Pioneer Website. Stand out rides were Finn Pearce riding the red line and looking great on the bike. Each time I see him his riding has improved and he must surely be a future champion. A great ride also by Stuart Lawton on a 70’s Twin Shock TY taking first in Twin Shock, but also first in Intermediate. The Sidecar classes also saw some new pairings and new outfits this year. Stand out ride must be John Lawton who, with Conner Newton in the chair both had large smiles all weekend.

Queens Birthday Weekend saw Pioneer Motorcycle Club run the 76th edition of the Kaikoura 3 Day trial. The Club was rewarded with a large entry of 93 riders from across New Zealand including 5 Sidechairs, 9 Twin Shocks, 9 Women, and 8 Junior riders. Day 1 was at Birches Road south of Kaikoura featuring creek sections, grassy sections and mud. Considering it is June the weather was warm with no frost. A frost did greet us for Day 2 at Dairy Flat reached after travelling a short distance along the Inland Road. Easier sections on the second day combined with a longer loop saw many happy faces. Day 3 was again fine with no frost for the last day at Mt Fyffe. For the upper grades the creek sections were the most challenging day. It was great to have three fine and warm days for Kaikoura after having some rain on the last day last year. Prize giving was held at the Whaler in Kaikoura before everyone departed for home. Overall winner of Expert was Jason Baker with a well deserved win. Thanks to everyone who travelled to the event. The Club has had some great feedback, and looks forward to hosting you all again next year. Enjoy Lynette's photos.
The first classic trial for 2021 in Canterbury, New Zealand, was hosted by Brent and Shirley at their property in Swanannoa just north of Christchurch. A warm day and great turn out of riders to try the sections. Once done we had a shared BBQ lunch sheltering in the shade of a large shed as the temperature rose. Enjoy the photos. Thirty two riders headed to North Canterbury in the South Island of New Zealand for the Marshmans Road Classic Trial. Held in extremely hot conditions, everyone was pleased that most sections had some shade under the trees. A couple of sections included some tight turns to steel a few points from most of us, and section 3's two trees separated by a tight turn also gathered some points. An enjoyable day out with some excellent rides including Paul managing 2 clean rounds riding A+. Peter and Tui also had good rides, which may suggest their recent trials riding trip to Tasmania gave them some valuable experience.

The first post lock down trial run by the Pioneer Motorcycle Club was held at Graylees Road on Banks Peninsula in the South Island of New Zealand last weekend. Great to see a good turn out, and continued support for the kids classes on separate sections. Wet weather when setting the sections out, as well as rain forecast overnight, meant the sections were set on the easy side given the expected dampness. However as conditions were better than expected is was great to see riders trying the harder lines and in the end everyone went home happy. Great to see a couple of new riders, who both rode very well, and thanks to Simon and Kahu for setting the trial. It is good to be running events again after a three month break.

Pioneer Motorcycle Club's May Trial was held at Omihi in North Canterbury. As others experienced up North this weekend, the weather behaved on Saturday while Simon and Kahu put the sections in, however the rain was steady on Sunday making the sections quite slippery. Despite the weather we had a great turn out of 30 riders who slid around the sections. It was certainly an advantage if you rode the sections quickly to get around before they cut up.
Special mention must be made of the five Mini riders who all rode the Clubman B line. While this was a bit harder than normally set for Mini sections, each rider rode really well, thou Koby was handicapped by his smaller wheels. Thanks also to the parents who stood in the rain for a few hours encouraging our future champions, and Lynette also standing in the rain capturing these photos.
Now we have had a wet trial we look forward to riding three dry days at Kaikoura. Entries are out on the Pioneer web site now.

Queens Birthday Weekend saw Pioneer Motorcycle Club run the 76th edition of the Kaikoura 3 Day trial. The Club was rewarded with a large entry of 93 riders from across New Zealand including 5 Sidechairs, 9 Twin Shocks, 9 Women, and 8 Junior riders. Day 1 was at Birches Road south of Kaikoura featuring creek sections, grassy sections and mud. Considering it is June the weather was warm with no frost. A frost did greet us for Day 2 at Dairy Flat reached after travelling a short distance along the Inland Road. Easier sections on the second day combined with a longer loop saw many happy faces. Day 3 was again fine with no frost for the last day at Mt Fyffe. For the upper grades the creek sections were the most challenging day. It was great to have three fine and warm days for Kaikoura after having some rain on the last day last year. Prize giving was held at the Whaler in Kaikoura before everyone departed for home. Overall winner of Expert was Jason Baker with a well deserved win. Thanks to everyone who travelled to the event. A perfect sunny day for our May Classic Trial. Held at Greendale, inland from Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand. Thanks to the section setters who got the mix just right with sections that looked difficult, took a few points, but were all ride-able. Great also to see a number of new riders out to test themselves against the sections - It does get easier.
Finished the day with a barbecue and stopped for some amber liquid on the way home.
The 78th Kaikoura Three Day Trial was held on the traditional date in June, now named King’s Birthday Weekend. 76 solo entrants and 7 sidecars tackled the sections at a different property each day.
The first day was at Birches Road, Oaro, in fine weather with no frost. 3 laps of 12 sections, with no deep mud this year, and just a couple of sections in my grade that I couldn’t clean. Day 2 was held at Dairy Flat off the Inland Kaikoura Road, with fine weather and again no frost. A longer loop today with 4 laps of 10 sections. Only one tricky section in my grade, so points were low.
Sunday night saw us congregate at the Whaler Hotel for a meal and presentation to David Chambers who was riding at his 50th Kaikoura event. A great achievement and no doubt he will notch up a few more.
Overnight some periods of heavy rain could be heard on the roof of our accommodation, however this reduced to just some occasional light rain showers once we got to the venue. Half a dozen sections in the creek, with 3 laps of 12 sections in total. Some higher scores on this last day, but easier sections in our grade this year compared to previous.
Then to prize giving before disbursing for home. The event is supported by riders throughout New Zealand with a large number travelling from the North Island as well as regular competitors from across the full length of the South Island. A notable point is the number of families taking part with two and even three generations competing at the event. The large field of 10 Junior riders completed the same sections and loops as senior riders on all days. Seeing this number of Juniors completing the weekend, and their riding skills is great for the future of the sport.
The placings for each class are on the Pioneer Website. Stand out rides were Finn Pearce riding the red line and looking great on the bike. Each time I see him his riding has improved and he must surely be a future champion. A great ride also by Stuart Lawton on a 70’s Twin Shock TY taking first in Twin Shock, but also first in Intermediate. The Sidecar classes also saw some new pairings and new outfits this year. Stand out ride must be John Lawton who, with Conner Newton in the chair both had large smiles all weekend.
