House Special Braised Yellow Fish
- yellowfish, soy, chilies, sugar
This was deemed the best plate of the entire meal by everyone at our table - fish was absolutely fork tender and braised to perfection. The flavors were extremely complex and balanced, with sweet overtones taking a lead, however. Aromatics, chilies, spice and flavors mixed in harmony, and delivered a taste sensation like I have never had before.
Word of caution: yellowfish has a decent amount of small bones, so this plate is better suited for adults only.

Scrambled Egg with Chopped Chinese Toon Leaves
- eggs, Chinese Toon/Xiang Chun Ya
This is one of the classics, apparently. I have not had a chance to taste the aromatic leaves of Chinese Toon before, and it was unlike anything I can possibly describe. This dish is really the kind that needs to be tried, as my words simply can not justice to how complex and interesting the flavors on this plate really are.

Pork and Chinese Cabbage Cake

Just like Mama use to make. These cakes reminded me of the Russian "pirozki" - deep fried (or sometimes baked) dough pockets stuffed with all kinds of goodies. Yet another beautiful plate of food.

The simple mix of onions, celery, carrots, garlic and ginger made for a perfect flavour base for my Curried Lentil-Rice Potage.
Super healthy with all the beta-carotene present in the carrots and pumpkin, the curcumin in the curry powder and turmeric and all the fibre in the protein-rich lentils and brown rice, this thick vegan soup doesn't skimp on flavour either!

Fried Yam Wrapped with Syrup
- fried, yam, chinese dates/jujube, sugar strands
Truly unique dish, and as Cheeryvisage described it, a "time-sensitive" one. Served piping hot, the idea is to pick up fried yam with your chopsticks and to stretch ( and to cool) sugar into thin strands, somewhat similar to cotton candy. Although we were planning to have this plate as a dessert, it was served with the savory dishes - still, it did fit in with the other plates quite well.
This plate has to be eaten immediately as it served, otherwise sugar will caramelize and make separating yam pieces virtually impossible.

"What Mommy Wants..."
....mommy gets! After months of taking slices of different loaves of my homemade bread to work with her for snacks and lunches, my mom casually commented how she missed the bagels I used to make for her in the past. How could I say no? I did a little bit of pantry exploration and came up with this recipe - dried cherries and tart cherry concentrate from Michelle's Miracle, ground almonds, minced pecans and a crushed All Bran cereal bar. Boiled up and baked in a hot oven, they're perfectly dense, filling and wholesome rings fit for breakfast or anytime at all!
Sour Cabbage Dumpling (Steamed)
Golden Palace features quite a few dumplings, including "Lamb Dumplings" and "Loofah Dumplings" (which unfortunately they did not have on the day of our visit). Lamb is a staple of Dongbei cuisine, by the way. Also, in case you are as curious about what Loofah is, just like ettible and I were - it is Ridge Gourd (aka Chinese Okra).
I am not certain if these dumplings were house-made, but it would be a safe guess to say that they were ( frozen dumplings are also available for purchase, according to the menu). Again, another well-made dish - very tasteful.
Noteworthy: Dongbei shares a border with Siberia, where steamed dumplings are considered a local specialty - as you may imagine, harsh winters call for warming food, and dumplings definitely qualify as such.

I was planning to make some maple-laced, whole grain croutons to serve with the potage too, but it was so thick and velvety on its own that I didn't have the heart to mess with the texture.

Baby Chicken with Mushroom
- chicken, mushrooms, glass noodles, spices
This appetizing dish came form the "Casserole" part of the extensive Golden Palace menu. I am not certain about ingredients or even spices in this comforting and aromatic stew, but it was rather rich on umami flavors and masterfully seasoned. Dongbei cuisine typically features vinegar in many of its dishes, although I don't think this casserole had much, if any, of it. Still, it was perfectly balanced.

Created a new set-up for my Big Green Eggs and placed them in a small cabin. So basically it is now the outdoor kitchen 2.0. Well for us,.... always nice to improve your set-up

Pickled Shredded Potato - this was one of the "canapes", it was served with another plate of pickles and tea.
Pickled potatoes is something Golden Palace Restaurant is famous for, and rightfully so - potato shreds had a touch of a nice bite, but none of the starchy texture.'

Spicy Pickles - another pickled "canape". Out of four of us at the table nobody could discern the primary root vegetable, it may have been some type of radish, I think. This canape packed some heat, but it was nicely balanced by the other flavors.

A slab of my "tester" pie recipe that I'm planning to use for the blueberry pie bake-off at the Evergreen Brick Works blueberry festival on August 14th. Not being able to taste it myself I'm relying on others to give me honest, constructive feedback, and so far I've been getting raves, especially the wheat germ and Grand Marnier-spiked crust! Turns out I'm pretty good at gauging sweetness and viscosity levels in the filling, which is amusing because I don't even like blueberry pie!

A slab of my "tester" pie recipe that I'm planning to use for the blueberry pie bake-off at the Evergreen Brick Works blueberry festival on August 14th. Not being able to taste it myself I'm relying on others to give me honest, constructive feedback, and so far I've been getting raves, especially the wheat germ and Grand Marnier-spiked crust! Turns out I'm pretty good at gauging sweetness and viscosity levels in the filling, which is amusing because I don't even like blueberry pie!
