Heliopsis...like the sun. helianthoides...like a sunflower. Whatever you want to call it, it is most impressive with the tall height and bright yellow flowers.
These plants look just like strawberry plants, but they have no strawberries. The brilliant yellow flowers are a compensation, though.

Looks to me like an onion: the leaves are unusually broad, but the flowers, in detail, are very onion-like. I can't pin down this color combination, though. Sunny shoulder of a trail (former road) through young forest, sandy soil.
But, Gravitywave pointed me in the direction of western false asphodel, Triantha occidentalis occidentalis. Not much relationship to the onions.
