A Tennessee Warbler seen during early fall migration.

Taken at Great Hollow Lake

Monroe, CT

On Monday, I decided to see if there were any interesting birds in Lake White since fall migration has begun.

I saw and photographed various ducks. I believe the majority of them are mallards, but since I saw some of different sizes, I am hoping that I am wrong and perhaps there are some migrants in the flock. However, I need help from others, as my duck and bird identification skills are a work in progress.

The "deep" part of Lake White is so large that it is hard to distinguish birds that are far out on the water, even with my lens at 400mm. (I should have brought my extender.)

The lake is currently lowered and will continue to remain low while the earthen dam and spillway are being rebuilt. So this does allow for the possibility of some wading birds in the "deep" part.

Had a brand new bird show up in my yard during this Fall migration season. It was after some little white bugs I didn't know I had on my crepe myrtles. I knew it was some kind of warbler but after research and consulting a bird id group, found out it was a Nashville Warbler. It was only here for one day.

Second warbler of the season. It was gone too fast.

This is an artic sandpiper, breeds on the artic tundra and winter in the artic ocean. When they migrate it normally is over the ocean, not land. This bird caused a sensation in the birding community when it showed up at the WRL dam base a couple of weeks ago. Probably the only one I'll ever see in my life. First time ever seen in Dallas county. When something like this happens, it is usually a juvenile that got lost. I was lucky I got some shots after hearing about it.

American White Pelicans winter every year at White Rock Lake then migrate away in the Spring. These three were the first to show up this year, about mid September. The black on top of the head is their eclipse plumage. It will turn solid white as winter deepens.

I think this is a Bay-breasted warbler. This makes 16 warblers for this fall.

The water seemed to be grabbing and reluctant to let go of both the bill and the foot of the dowitcher.

This flicker found a nice hiding spot.

These birds summer in Canada and Winter here and other states. Mine always show up in November and disappear in April. Glad to see them back.

I love fall migration time with all the new birds it brings. Warblers are the hardest to identify, they don't stay still and I know I've had many of them here briefly but was unable to get a photo or identify them. Just got lucky with this one.

Found a beautiful little fall warbler right above my head at the lake. The colors of the bird blended perfectly with the colors of the autumn leaves.

Photographing birds in the rain is a challenge however the richness of colors and saturation of hues make the effort worth it.

The bird was a long ways down at the base of the dam so no one got a close up of it. I saved several different views for documentation purpose.
