The sunrise that appeared on the morning I spent on the backwaters of Kerala was in pastel faint colors! The lake was peaceful as the light fell on the water lily pads and the reflections of the clouds.

And where there is no echo there is no description of space or love. There is only silence.

Drowsy caterpillars are transforming into moths with a cunning skill - producing their own cyanide.

Plump in their yellow cocoons, caterpillars of six-spot burnet moths have been pupating in the Museum grounds.

And this common British species has started to emerge, complete with eye-catching red and black wings.

The red spots are a sign of a deadly talent. The moths are able to produce hydrogen cyanide - a chemical compound that gives them a bad taste and, in large quantities, can kill a predator. With dark, faintly iridescent forewings bearing six bright red spots, the burnet moths (Zygaena filipendulae) are easy to spot against green grass.

The species is widespread in Britain and Europe, and it has hydrogen cyanide at every stage of its life cycle. The caterpillar food is birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), a grassland plant that grows in the Wildlife Garden. When caterpillars feed on its leaves, they are able to metabolise toxins found inside the plant for their own use, without being harmed.

If the caterpillars do not get enough hydrogen cyanide from their food, they can produce it themselves.

The cyanide is also used as a mating tactic. Females can release plumes of the chemical, which is likely to combine with normal sexual pheromones and help attract males. Males can also transfer the cyanide to a female during mating. The six-spot burnet moth thrives in grassland, and visitors to the Museum will be able to see it fly and lay eggs during July and August.

Caterpillars will then start feeding in autumn, before hibernating through the winter and pupating next spring.

Unlike many species of nocturnal moths, the six-spot burnet is active during the day, relying on its striking wings to warn off predators.

A group of red-crowned cranes were coming down at Kikuchi Farm, Tsurui, Hokkaido, Japan. Since it was late afternoon, the tips of their wings were faintly pink, receiving light from the back.

Been inspired by so many profile pictures I saw recently, so I felt to take another "headshot" and played afterwards with the color presets. Just B/W was to "white" in my opinion so I left a slight part of red.

I'm really happy with the result, what do you think?

The historic taxonomic status of Harlan's hawk has been quite erratic, sometimes it has been classified as its own species, B. harlani to the opposite extreme that R. S. Palmer (1988) classified as it (perhaps improbably) as a mere western color morph. Most modern authorities recognize as a valid subspecies. Harlan's hawk is markedly different from all other red tails and can be identified nearly 100% of the time by an experienced hawk watcher. Throughout the morphs of this subspecies, the plumage is predominantly blackish, lacking any warmer or brownish tones (save the tail). Harlan's hawks usually have faint streaks on the sides of their head and about their chest with a little gray mottling or speckling on the scapulars. Apart from a variably white-streaked throat, their underparts are usually mostly black with variable white streaking and barring on the thighs or crissum. There are up to four main variations from the typical one above: extreme dark morph (where even the throat is black and no pale streaking is present), dark morph (with barring still present from the tarsus to the underside), rare pale morph (with few blackish blobs on the belly and generally a whiter head) and perhaps even rarer types where the base color is grayish. Unlike most red-tailed hawks, generally immatures are similar enough than adults that it can be difficult to distinguish them. On average, immatures have more extensive pale streaking above and mottling below, but much individual variation has been recorded. The typical tail of a Harlan's hawk is white with a thick black subterminal band but individuals may vary considerable and the tail may be reddish, dusky, whitish or gray and can be longitudinally streaked, mottled or barred.

Job 4:12-17:

A secret was told to me

in a faint whisper,

when I was overcome by sleep

and disturbed by dreams.

I trembled with fear,

and my hair stood on end.

A wind blew past my face,

and it stopped and stood still.

Then a form appeared—

a shapeless form.

And from the silence,

I heard a whisper:

“Can a mortal be more righteous than God?

Can a man be more pure than his Maker?”

Good time to go through photos now that it's been cloudy 24/7. This was taken earlier at our summer house. Faint northern lights can be seen in the north between clouds.

Sometimes things go wrong, but end up right anyway.
