full moon rising tonight in Ireland

This image is an addition of three shots. Each one was made high contrast and threshold in PS to extract just birds against white. While heavily processed, it is not un-representative of being there in person considering it is before sunrise, a few days past the full moon, and quite cloudy.

As the groups of Sandhill cranes become aloft, the sky is filled with ribbon after ribbon of cranes going different directions at different altitudes. The vocalizations are quite distinctive, carry a long distance, and very memorable. Cornell Labs says this about their calls: "The Sandhill Crane’s call is a loud, rolling, trumpeting sound whose unique tone is a product of anatomy: Sandhill Cranes have long tracheas (windpipes) that coil into the sternum and help the sound develop a lower pitch and harmonics that add richness."

A Trumpeter Swan paddles and flaps furiously in order to fly.

With clouds. The first full moon in January has often been referred to as the Wolf Moon for centuries. Its origin comes from Native Americans who often heard wolves howling during cold winter nights at this time of year.

...at Alresford, Hampshire

This building was originally erected in the 13th century, and was luckily saved from demolition in the 1950s after going into disuse in the 19th century.

Fulling is the process of tightening and shrinking cloth, which was done by human feet in the shallow waters here, until water power came along, which allowed hammers to the same work of people.

Alresford is on the edge of Jane Austen country near to Winchester, and is also at the centre of the watercress growing industry. The chalk streams that you see in this shot are perfect for the the cultivation of cress, and this valley (of the Alres river) along with the river test are festooned with watercress farms.

Whilst researching about this wonderful building I found this:

Of course the standard laser shot had to be done during our visit. I did place a green laser behind the grotto but it was just not powerful enough.

I don't generally go out of my way for full moon photos but I took this the same night I was out with the photography club. What I like about it was I actually captured an airplane (lower left quadrant) that I didn't see until I downloaded the photos. OH it was COLD that night!!! 3 layers of clothes didn't prevent me from getting cold! LOL Just thinking about it makes me want to go put a sweater on! Have a great day everyone!

And a sleepless night ;)

All those golden autumn days the sky was full of wings. Wings beating low over the blue water of Silver Lake, wings beating high in the blue air far above it . . . bearing them all away to the green fields in the South.
