The Murdock-Whitney House which is the location of the Winchendon Historical Society

History of Murdock-Whitney House

House is located at 151 Front Street. Built 1820-1830. Rear wings added and exterior remodeled in 1901. Moved several feet to the rear in 1901. Acreage .165.

Always the home of members of one of the most successful and longest standing families, this residence is among the most impressive remaining in town. Although principally Colonial Revival in its redesign, Victorian elements are also employed as in the angled, engaged tower on the east elevation and the continuous veranda which wraps from the façade to extend along the full length of the east elevation. Wall detail is elaborate including pilasters at the corners and between the trip art window of the pediment frontispiece which projects over the veranda and a projecting, bow front bay on the west elevation with banded windows.

The hip roof is broken on each elevation by pediment gable dormers. Eaves detail includes molded cornice with modillions and dentils on the main block. Try glyphs decorated the frieze on the porch. The ambling veranda is covered on the façade with paired, Roman Doric columns on paneled pedestals. The roof is trimmed with a balustrade topped with urns at the corners. The main balustrade consists of an elaborately-executed pattern. The door surround consists of oversized elliptical fan and ¾ sidelights with tracery sided by fluted pilasters on paneled pedestals.

Fenestration is equally varied. Over sided 1/1 double hung sash overlooks the veranda on first floor. Cottage windows with tracery on the transom lights are surmounted with a pediment. Upper sash in the dormers have decorative, diamond-shaped lights. Tabbed oval windows are utilized in the pediment of the frontispiece and on the east elevation. Louvered shutters have been retained, but some are modern replacements.

This house was built by Elisha Murdock, son of Ephraim Murdock and founder in 1834 of E. Murdock and Company on River Street, Waterville.

E. Murdock and Company was the second oldest industry in Winchendon and became the oldest and largest woodenware manufacturing establishment in the country. Elisha Murdock was also the first president of Winchendon Savings Bank, chartered on March 31, 1854.

Mrs. Elisha Murdock continued to live here until 1889. William W. Whitney, the son-in-law of Elisha Murdock, had joined the firm of E. Murdock and Company in 1859. He inherited the business and this property which passed on to his son, Elisha Whitney, who had also joined the business with his father in 1890. Elisha Whitney lived here with his mother, Sophia, wife, Mary M. Whitney, and son, William W. Whitney, superintendent at E. Murdock and Company. In 1926, William W. and Adelaide H. Whitney moved from front Street to 16 Fairbank Street.

Trip to Alaska. Start Point: Vancouver, Canada. Jun/2016

Vancouver, is the most populous city in the Canadian provinceof British Columbia.

The 2011 census recorded 603,502 people in the city, making it the eighth largest Canadian municipality.[1] The Greater Vancouver area of around 2.4 million inhabitants is the third most populous metropolitan area in the country, the second largest city on the United States–Canada border, and the most populous in Western Canada. Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada; 52% of its residents have a first language other than English.Vancouver is classed as aBeta global city. The City of Vancouver encompasses a land area of about 114 square km, giving it a population density of about 5,249 people per square km (13,590 per square mi).

The original settlement, named Gastown, grew up on clearcuts on the west edge of the Hastings Mill logging sawmill's property, where a makeshift tavern had been set up on a plank between two stumps and the proprietor, Gassy Jack, persuaded the curious millworkers to build him a tavern, on 1 July 1867. From that first enterprise, other stores and some hotels quickly appeared along the waterfront to the west. Gastown became formally laid out as a registered townsite dubbed Granville, B.I. ("B.I" standing for "Burrard Inlet"). As part of the land and political deal whereby the area of the townsite was made the railhead of the CPR, it was renamed "Vancouver" and incorporated shortly thereafter as a city, in 1886. By 1887, the transcontinental railway was extended to the city to take advantage of its large natural seaport, which soon became a vital link in a trade route between the Orient, Eastern Canada, and Europe. As of 2014, Port Metro Vancouver is the third largest port by tonnage in the Americas (displacing New York), 27th in the world,[9] the busiest and largest in Canada, and the most diversified port in North America. While forestry remains its largest industry, Vancouver is well known as an urban centre surrounded by nature, making tourism its second-largest industry. Major film production studios in Vancouver and Burnaby have turned Greater Vancouver and nearby areas into one of the largest film production centres in North America, earning it the film industry nickname, Hollywood North.

Vancouver is consistently named as one of the top five worldwide cities for livability and quality of life, and the Economist Intelligence Unit acknowledged it as the first city to rank among the top-ten of the world's most liveable cities for five consecutive years.Vancouver has hosted many international conferences and events, including the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, UN Habitat I, Expo 86, the World Police and Fire Games in 1989 and 2009; and the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics which were held in Vancouver and Whistler, a resort community 125 km (78 mi) north of the city. In 2014, following thirty years in California, the annual TED conference made Vancouver its indefinite home. Several matches of the2015 FIFA Women's World Cup were played in Vancouver, including the final at BC Place Stadium.

" Work is the moving power of society development "

In Namibe, in an old garage, i saw this painted walls, with 70's communists slogans. Very few can still be seen i Angola. At this time, Cuba and USSR were supporting MPLA to fight UNITA party , supported by USA and South Africa.

In December 1956, in Portuguese Angola the Angolan Communist Party (PCA) merged with the Party of the United Struggle for Africans in Angola (PLUA) to form the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola with Viriato da Cruz, the President of the PCA, as Secretary General.

During 1975, before the official Portuguese withdrawal, the civil war in Angola intensifies. In fighting for control of the capital city, Luanda, the MPLA succeeds in driving out both its rivals. UNITA, which claims to enjoy wider popular support than the other groups, argues that Portugal must fulfil its last colonial duty and supervise elections.

But the Portuguese, eager to leave as quickly as possible, abandon the country without formally handing over control to any succeeding government. The MPLA, in possession of the capital and with guaranteed support from the USSR and Cuba, declared itself the government of independent Angola. Agostinho Neto, a distinguished poet who had led the MPLA since 1962, became president.

The Soviet Union supported the MPLA-PT as a liberation movement before independence and formalized its relationship with the MPLAPT government through the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation and a series of military agreements beginning in 1975. Once it became clear that the MPLA-PT could, with Cuban support, remain in power, the Soviet Union provided economic and technical assistance and granted Angola most-favored-nation status. In 1976 MPLA adopted Marxism-Leninism as the party ideology. It maintained close ties with the Soviet Union and the Communist bloc, establishing socialist economic policies and a one-party state.

For the first decade after independence, trade with communist states was not significant, but in the late 1980s dos Santos sought expanded economic ties with the Soviet Union, China, and Czechoslovakia and other nations of Eastern Europe as the MPLA-PT attempted to diversify its economic relations and reduce its dependence on the West. In October 1986, Angola signed a cooperative agreement with the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (Comecon), a consortium dedicated to economic cooperation among the Soviet Union and its allies. As part of the Comecon agreement, Soviet support for Angolan educational and training programs was increased. In 1987 approximately 1,800 Angolan students attended institutions of higher education in the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union also provided about 100 lecturers to Agostinho Neto University in Luanda, and a variety of Soviet-sponsored training programs operated in Angola, most with Cuban instructors. Approximately 4,000 Angolans studied at the international school on Cuba's renowned Isle of Youth. More Angolan students were scheduled to attend the Union of Young Communists' School in Havana in 1989.

Cuba's presence in Angola was more complex than it appeared to outsiders who viewed the Soviet Union's Third World clients as little more than surrogates for their powerful patron. The initiative in placing Cuban troops in Angola in the mid-1970s was taken by President Fidel Castro as part of his avowed mission of "Cuban internationalism." Facing widespread unemployment at home, young Cuban men were urged to serve in the military overseas as their patriotic duty, and veterans enjoyed great prestige on their return. Castro also raised the possibility of a Cuban resettlement scheme in southern Angola, and several hundred Cubans received Angolan citizenship during the 1980s. Cuban immigration increased sharply in 1988. In addition to military support, Cuba provided Angola with several thousand teachers, physicians, and civilian laborers for construction, agriculture, and industry. Angolan dependence on Cuban medical personnel was so complete that during the 1980s Spanish became known as the language of medicine.
