This cow moose (alces alces) seemed to have had her head submerged for ages before surfacing. That said, she had grabbed a fair mouthful of water weeds and disturbed a few more. She looked a little ragged because she was shedding some of her Winter coat. As many opine for the days when the Bozeman Local ran like clockwork and with clean power, no doubt people such as Mark Hemphill yearn for when the MRL #405 plied the rails as DRGW #3047. Although the tonnage on this day won't make a dent in the speed, even with a 1.9% grade ahead, the #405 undoubtedly saw mountain territory in its previous life. The #3047 was one of 22 GP35's delivered to the DRGW between 1964/65. Like most of the GP35 fleet, it lasted just about 28 years, being retired in Dec 1993 along with 17 others. An interesting note is that all 22 GP35's were made to be trailing unit only in 1972, removing cab seats, toilets and radios. I am unsure if this lasted until their retirement or if they were made lead qualified again at some point. Thanks to utahrails.net for the great details! Its an interesting note that by now the #405 has spent close to or more time on the Montana Rail Link than it did the Denver and Rio Grande Western. Time marches on!

I love stained glass windows. We arrived very early for Mass and I took the opportunity to grab a shot of one.

Happy Window Wednesday.

During last year's (2015) vacation we spent a day and night on Cape Cod. I got some good opportunities to photograph the local birds, specifically gulls. While I am no expert, I believe this one is a Herring Gull. If you think different, let me know.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park - South Unit, North Dakota

I heard someone talking in the campground about how an aurora was predicted for the coming night. I thought that since I was in North Dakota I should be able to see it. So, I went scouting for a location that had a view to the north. That turned out to be a Bison trail through shoulder high grass to the Little Missouri River. Because moonset was going to be about midnight, I got up about 11:30 to try to find my way in the darkness to the Bison trail and out into the grass. While I was shooting the aurora I started hearing loud snorting in powerful deep bass notes which was undoubtedly bison moving out into the grass. After a short while I could hear the snorting all around me. I shone my headlamp out into the darkness but never saw the shape of an animal. I have to admit that the bison were frightening me. I didn't think an encounter in the darkness would go well and was wondering how I would make my way through them back to the campground or how I could avoid them at all. Eventually the snorting drifted by and I returned down the trail without incident.

There could be bison in this picture. I can't tell but they were definitely out there in the direction this was taken. The Little Missouri River is just in front of the hills on the horizon.

A shelter for ice hole swimmers has already been placed into its position. Actually a water pump is also needed when the water will be iced to make the hole keep free from ice.

I got a great look at the stairs as for the first time as the gate was open. What I'm wondering though, is what happens after the small drop you can see - look for the post - see Note.

A wish, that to my latest hour

Shall strongly heave my breast -

That I for poor auld Scotland's sake

Some usefu' plan or beuk could make,

Or sing a sang at least.

The rough burr-thistle, spreading wide

Amang the bearded bear,

I turn'd the weeding-heuk aside,

An' spar'd the symbol dear:

No nation, no station

My envy e'er could raise,

A Scot still, but blot still,

I knew nae higher praise.

The Chatteris War Memorial and the Parish Church of St Peter & St Paul, with a cascading poppy display, all ready for Remembrance Day.

For a short time, Amtrak’s California Zephyr saw 161 on rotation. This was Amtrak’s Phase I heritage unit and replaced the previous Phase I, 156, after it hit a truck and got severely damaged. Just like 156, 161 also has been retired as a few weeks ago it caught fire in Washington D.C. and was burnt to a crisp.

Had to kill some time waiting while the car was serviced, so I dashed to the Read Rock Garden to see what on offer for this snowy spring. MANY blossoms! Got off my tush and looked it up, it's a Puschkinia scilloides (Striped Squill).

And also Happy Fence Friday.

The weather since I've been down at the shore has not been great.

It's been overcast and cool every morning.

Hasn't made me want to leap out of bed and go for an early morning walk along the beach.......I feel like I'm in a holding pattern, just waiting for the clouds to lift so I can head out with the camera.

We've been getting these small windows of sunshine, here and there though, most afternoons.

Yesterday the sun came out late day, and I took a drive back out to 2 Mile Landing where I'd seen some interesting possibilities the day before.

The lighting was beautiful when I got there, and I spent a very nice 45 minutes snapping away at several different species of birds poking around out in the marsh.

These pretty barn swallows were busy swooping across the mudflats eating flying insects.

I manage to catch this one as it briefly landed on a nearby fence, before taking off again.

Not 5 minutes after I took this shot I felt a noticeable drop in temperture, and when I turned around toward the ocean, there was a very dark fog rolling towards me. Looked like a scene out of that horror flick, "The Mist".

I quickly got in my car and headed for home.

By the time I got there, the fog was so dense you couldn't see to the end of the street.

The weather can change SO quickly on the coast!

Thanks for your time and recognition. Appreciate all kind of feedback.
