This is the father of those little chicks in they're nest in the following photos. He's not only a handsome devil to be sure but a very protective father and mate. He gets nearly right in my face, because he believes I'm getting to close to maintain security for his family and is letting me know I need to back off. Because he doesn't know what my intentions are?

But I am keeping a respectful distance from his brood, and am meaning no harm whatsoever. He flies by my face a couple of times to see what I'd do, and I didn't even raise my camera, because if I had, it might have accidentally hit him he was that close. He finally realizes I'm no threat and gives me the okay.

The Trumpeters winter in our area, they can be seen feeding in the rivers, shallow areas of the bay and resting in corn fields. I really enjoy seeing them, always a high point of my day. In this scene an adults leads a juvenile.

Rame Head, Cornwall

Following on from the 2am night shoot of the Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash – Brunel’s masterpiece and a bucket list location for me personally, our next destination was Rame Head and a chance to get some shuteye before sunrise. By the time Geoff and I had surfaced Mark was already gone and shooting… no surprises there!

It must have been all the travelling and lack of sleep (I do like my minimum 8 hours kip) that I found this location difficult to shoot and have by-passed it so far with my uploads, but there is always something to pull out of the hat. Bland into dramatic I like to think… a bit like Lyle’s Golden Syrup – out of the strong came forth sweetness.

Following the Missouri River, Burlington Northern’s Helena local passes by Hardy, Montana, on August 25, 1993. This train is traveling from Great Falls to Helena on BN’s scenic Helena Subdivision, which unfortunately is no longer in service.

Right on the heels of this mornings' Metra Rush hour was CP 470-30 with a nice GW orange leader, crossing over to #2 main off the WWD Siding. Whomever works the former DM&E shops out there does a damn admirable job of keeping all that power looking good. Any other place, that yellow pilot would be way disgusting! Rondout, IL.

“Tortitude” – The Unique Personality of Tortoiseshell Cats

Posted by Ingrid

Tortitude = tortoiseshell cat personality

Tortoiseshell cats are named for their distinctive coloring – a combination of patches of black, brown, amber, red, cinnamon and chocolate. The size of the patches varies from a fine speckled pattern to large areas of color. The term “tortoiseshell” is used for cats with brindled coats that have few or no white markings. Cats of this coloring with larger areas of white fur are called calicos. Sometimes, these colors present in lighter versions such as lilac or cream. Torties with this lighter coloring are called dilute torties. Occasionally, the typical tortoiseshell colors are also seen in a tabby (striped) pattern, and these cats are sometimes referred to as “torbies.”

Tortoiseshell cats are almost exclusively female. Tortoiseshell and calico coats are the result of the interaction between genetic and developmental factors. The occasional and very rare male tortoiseshell cat is the result of a genetic mutation.

In addition to their distinctive coloring, torties also have a reputation for unique personalities, sometimes referred to as “tortitude.” They tend to be strong-willed, a bit hot-tempered, and they can be very possessive of their human. Other words used to describe torties are fiercely independent, feisty, and unpredictable. They’re usually very talkative and make their presence and needs known with anything from a hiss to a meow to a strong purr.

My Note: I would say Ruthie is insistent! When Miss Ruth wants to be fed something new and different than what she is given, she will call with a series of rapid intense meows, in a loud demanding tone.

These traits are stronger in tortoiseshell cats than in calicos – it seems as though these traits are somewhat diluted with the addition of more white to the color scheme.

From Wikipedia:

Torties, i.e., Tortoiseshell Cats

Tortoiseshell describes a coat coloring found almost exclusively in female cats.[1][2] Also called Torties for short, they combine two colors other than white, either closely mixed or in large patches.[2] The colors are often described as red and black, but "red" can instead be orange, yellow, or cream[2] and "black" can instead be chocolate, grey, tabby, or blue.[2] A tortoiseshell cat with the tabby pattern as one of its colors is a Torbie.

"Tortoiseshell" is typically reserved for cats with relatively small or no white markings. Those that are largely white with tortoiseshell patches are described as tricolor,[2] tortoiseshell-and-white (in the United Kingdom), or calico (in Canada and the United States). Tortoiseshell markings appear in many different breeds as well as in non-purebred domestic cats.[3] This pattern is especially preferred in the Japanese Bobtail breed.[4]

Folklore[edit]

Cats of this coloration are believed to bring good luck in the folklore of many cultures.[10] In the United States, these are sometimes referred to as money cats.[11] The Japanese Maneki Neko figurine is almost always a calico cat.

Following Germany's surrender and the end of the war, the governments of East Berlin and West Berlin restored it in a joint effort. The holes were patched, but were visible for many years following the war.

Vehicles and pedestrians could travel freely through the gate, located in East Berlin, until the Berlin Wall was built, 13 August 1961. Brandenburg Gate border crossing was later closed on 14 August 1961. West Berliners gathered on the western side of the gate to demonstrate against the Berlin Wall, among them West Berlin's governing Mayor Willy Brandt, who had spontaneously returned from a federal election campaigning tour in West Germany earlier on the same day. It was closed throughout the Berlin Wall period until 22 December 1989.

Trying to find every ounce of color I can. Funny I suppose for a guy who likes BW images best.

Following a high tide and strong winds the sandy beach at Studland was littered with myriad molluscs thrown unceremoniously together amongst a clutter of tangled seaweed and beach debris. Waving in the air in an attempt to find firm ground this cockle is eager to return to the sea before the greedy gulls arrive.

Thank you all for your kind responses.

Following years of macro photography where sharpness, detail, focus stacking and DOF are all important, it's a breath of fresh air to do the opposite, it is quite hard to get an image that half way works however. Just another realisation that whatever genre you choose it can be difficult, thank you for your time.

A couple of young Bobcats following their mother along some flooded areas. The mother was farther to the right out of the shot.

According to Google Maps it was right at around 485 feet away from me, something like that, it was VERY far away.

I stacked a 1.4 and a 2.0 extender together on a 400mm lens to get this shot.

Floro made a gorgeous headdres and the hud has so many options that you can make it extremely unique to you so zoom in for full detail. I decided to give it a Byzantium-era acolyte edge by adding the facechains by Unholy and the VelvetVue Dots eyes for a bit of intrigue.

All can be found at Midnight Order and the Sabbath events right now.

Last night, following a spontaneous inspiration, I went to the Schrammsteine in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

At first, I was worried it would be too crowded up there. But during the hike,

I realized already, that most of the day visitors were already on their way back. A huge advantage for me, since I live right around the corner.

And so, despite it being a Saturday evening, the crowds at the lookout point were limited (although I was by no means the only one), and I was able to relax and enjoy the view.

On 21.12.2017, following a tip off from a friend, I made my 2nd 6 hour (round trip) drive into London to search for another rarely recorded Earthstar species. It was Geastrum campestre, the Field Earthstar. I saw this firstly at another site in Greater London on 2.12.2017

Searching the BMS FRDBI database (British Mycological Society, The Fungal Records Database of Britain and Ireland) beforehand, there were only 14 U.K. records from 1926 to 2017 !

Under a single mature cedar tree, I found a mixture of 52 fruiting bodies & eggs ; Made up of 8 fresh fruiting bodies (paler coloured), 13 old fruiting bodies but maybe only a month or two old (with the darker brown ray colouration), 10 older fruiting bodies dried with rays curled up around the spore sac, 10 fresh eggs still unopened and 12 just opening from fresh eggs with rays pointing upwards around the spore sac.

There was also a single fresh specimen of Geastrum floriforme, the Daisy Earthstar.

There are 19 species of Earthstar in the U.K. and this was the 18th species of Earthstar that I have seen during the last 4 months.

Following the gentle contours of the Ottawa Valley, a pair of G&W GP38-2s hustle along OVR's scenic North Bay Subdivision with an eighteen-car train for the paper mill at Témiscaming, Quebec. It's hard to believe that this stretch of railroad was once a part of Canadian Pacific's transcontinental mainline.
