Within the smoky mountains tourists often come for the grand vistas, the unending cascades of mountains, the aw inspiring look at nature. The big animals, like bear, or elk, but sometimes the real beauty to behold is a tad bit smaller. Overlooking the fields at one of those aforementioned grand vistas, watching elk graze in the field, under the watchful eye of the ranger and the big bull, I noticed another scene playing out. Rows upon rows of purple wild flowers sprouting along the edges of the field, and right there, dancing butterflies. I dare not approach the scene, I dare not change lenses, I was looking for a shot of the elk. I hurriedly put the scene in my viewfinder and clicked away, before the two butterflies, simply fluttered away in the changing evening light.

This week's theme - 'Up Close/Macro' was chosen by Andrew ( www.flickr.com/photos/ajhaysom/ )
There is a vacant block of land in our neighbourhood so I ventured onto it with the macro lens on today. Lots of insects and I noticed that some of the metre high grass had begun to flower.

It's not usually easy to get a photo of a flowering yucca as the flowers are normally up high and on a difficult angle to photograph but I found this one which is quite nice.
While it's been warm with lots of rain this past week, the flowering quince has gone nuts! The shrubs are covered in pink buds & blossoms. Chorus frogs are in a roar and Spring peepers are starting to chirp. And the blue hydrangeas are greening out too early as usual. And I stopped to talk to the Green anole sunning on the downspout ... turned his brown eyes blue ;-)
We've got a string of frosty nights ahead - the last 2 weeks of January are our coldest days of the year. North Georgia
I love the white flowers that explode from purple buds. Crotons are the most popular of South Florida's colorful foliage plants, with brilliantly-colored leaves shot with gold, red, orange, green and even pink.
This easy-care shrub features color and low-maintenance for any size yard. They feature many leaf types and sizes - from swirly, narrow ribbons to wide, flat leaves.
Some cultivars such as Gold Dust, Corkscrew, Sloppy Painter, Red Bravo and Stoplight, can get as tall as 10 feet...these varieties are best kept to 4 to 5 feet.

My flowering quince just started blooming this past week - so the buds & blossoms had to ride out a couple of days below freezing into the mid-20's. They made it! I needed sun to get shots and finally got sunshine yesterday.
Been worried about our friends to the west hit by the snow & ice - from Alabama to Texas. I think Dave had the coldest temps in Nebraska. You all be safe ...

Thanks for taking time to comment, fave and look at my work. I really appreciate.
A second round of blooms from our magnificent cactus.
I like to imagine what it would be like to explore a world full of beautifully bizarre flora and fauna (and not be some creatures lunch).
