In 1977 the French performance artist Orlan caused a great scandal at the FIAC in Paris when she turned herself into a slot machine. By inserting 5 frances in the life size photograph one could buy a french kiss from the artist who sat behind the photograph of herself.
This article from Century Magazine (vol 48, 1893) praised Armstrong's design for this book on landscaping.
