The original image comes from my slide collection, amassed over the past 40+ years. They are a combination of my own photographs and ones acquired over those years.
I created this Photostream in 2017 for the purpose of holding my slide collection as an archive, as otherwise they would just remain in binders and boxes, not being enjoyed by anyone, myself included.

UP 4-8-4 Northern FEF-3 class steam locomotive # 8444 and its railfan excursion train is providing a photo run-by between Sterling & Denver, Colorado, summer 1980. On this trip I believe that speeds of 50 mph or greater were reached at times. Back in 1972 on a previous trip speeds of 70 mph were achieved. The locomotive most of the time is very clean burning with out too much smoke being generated, but for the photo run-by the UP cab crew attempts to generate extra smoke for the photographers. One nice detail about these earlier railfan trips is that the extra canteen cars or auxiliary tenders do not follow the tender and the situation appears to be much more normal. You can see the fireman in his cab window.

Union Pacific 4-8-4 FEF-3 class ALCO Northern steam locomotive # 8444 is being prepared to depart in the early morning sunlight with its railfan excursion train at Union Station Denver, Colorado, summer 1980. The railfans and photographer are located by every dutch door opening and at the baggage car door areas to observe or to capture the action on film. In this view you can see how the steam locomotive and tender tower over the lightweight passenger cars.

Seems rare to come across these in Diesel form now, this one looked really well cared for and incidentally I saw it parked up yesterday whilst in North West London, good to see it's still being used, I imagine it has a while left.
Union Pacific ALCO 4-8-4 Northern FEF-3 class steam locomotive # 8444, led rail fan excursion train is seen on the main line at photo run-by location in Colorado, July 26, 1980. A great plume of smoke is seen at this location as the train heads into the scene. This oil burning locomotive can really generate the smoke on demand.

Union Pacific FEF-3 class 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive # 8444, is seen leading a rail fan excursion train along the main line on a photo run-by in Colorado, July 26, 1980. Most of the herd of rail fans and photographers was located about seven hundred feet further back from my position. A better position would be at the rear end of the train prior to any other people being in the scene for a clean capture.
In October and November 2011 FEF-3 4-8-4 No 844 made a marathon tour of the West, ostensibly to celebrate the entry of Arizona and New Mexico into the Union. The itinerary was as follows, Cheyenne, Denver, Trinidad, Dalhart, El Paso, Tucson Yuma, San Bernardino, Salt Lake City, and Cheyenne. On the afternoon prior to departure for Denver, UP’s last built Northern stands outside the former diesel shop where it resides alongside ‘Challenger” 4-6-6-4 No 3985.

Union Pacific FEF-3 class 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive # 8444, is leading a rail fan excursion train on photo run-by with the herd looking on in Colorado, July 26, 1980. The train would shortly blast by my location, but I directly got into the clear after this photo was taken. The smoke was so thick that you could almost walk on it. Notice the interesting meter of sorts that's attached to the block signal.

Union Pacific 4-8-4 FEF-3 class ALCO Northern steam locomotive # 8444 with the full 12 car railfan excursion train seen while stopped at the station shortly after arriving with numerous passengers and observers seen at Sterling Colorado, summer 1980. These UP railfan excursion trips usually attracted large groups of passengers and observers, as in this situation. Water is now being supplied to the tender with the use of fire department hose and later the train will be turned for its return trip back to Denver, Colorado.
Union Pacific 4-8-4 FEF-3 class ALCO Northern steam locomotive # 8444 displays a cylinder, drivers, pilot wheels, cross-head, valve gear & main rod while stopped on a railfan excursion trip in Colorado, summer 1980. At the start of the trip all of the parts were very clean put with some running time and dirty along the route everything becomes dirty. The mechanical parts by their nature must be well lubricated and this extra oil and grease attracts dirt.
