Union Pacific FEF-3 Northern oil burning 4-8-4 steam locomotive # 8444 led 12 car Railfan Excursion train is seen while stopped at the station in Sterling, Colorado, Summer 1980. This train was turned at Sterling for the return trip back to Denver. Prior to turning the locomotive, the tender was being filled with water and the crew was oiling and lubricating the locomotive. There was a large crowd out and about to see the steam locomotive and there was a full load of passengers on the train. Sterling is situated in North East Colorado. Today this steam locomotive wears its original number # 844. Situated in the center background behind the train is a group of MOW cars and equipment.

Deliberation Dave watches Driver Andrew bring his Barclay built engine down the 1 in 20 grade out of the colliery. With full wagons it can be quite exciting watching the move as the loco and wagons sway and bounce around at ever increasing speed, especially if the rails are wet and greasy. Dave is a brave man, for the chances of being hit by flying coal are quite high. But we were tougher in olden times.
Beryl’s rebuilt Austin 7.5 can be seen behind The Pedant & Armchair to the left. I’m not sure of the reason, because it’s not a pub she frequents as a rule, its customers being mostly dull old men with adenoidal voices who’d rather pontificate over the width of flangeway clearances than chat to a ‘gurl’. Mother warned them about such creatures. Maybe she’s just dropped by for a pint of milk for her tea, for the pub sells more milk than beer, so it’s aways fresh and it’s conveniently on her way home. But why park at the rear of the pub when she could simply have pulled up at the front? Thoughts…..
Austin 7.5, what’s that, a typo? No, not at all, for when they rebuilt the engine, they overbored it a little and modified it to run on a 50/50 mix of moonshine and ‘Super’ for extra performance, it increasing the horsepower rating from the factory 7.2 to 7.5 - though unofficially it’s nearer 10 if the moonshine is particularly volatile.

It’s Front End Friday again #FEF
The little ex London & North Western Railway ‘Web Coal Tank’ has remained at Combwich shed for the Highbridge service for almost 2 weeks now. Usually this service is very quiet outside commuter hours, but since the locomotive’s arrival in this remote part of Somerset, passenger levels have increased tenfold with up to 10 passengers on a good day, with some riding the cushions for several trips.
The little locomotive has been attracting a lot of railway enthusiasts and photographers keen to enjoy the engine so far from home. The loco is officially based many miles away at 84G Shrewsbury shed, but because its had quite a history of regular engine shed hopping often after only a few weeks, they probably haven’t noticed its disappearance in far off Shropshire.
As with my post from a week or two, the loco crews are expected to pose for photographers prior to each departure, with Derek and Deliberation Dave now striking the perfect stance for the clicking shutters.
And finally, of course attention loving Bob Geeza Cat is in on the act, hoping that he’ll be offered a little tinned spam or cheese from the many enthusiasts’ packed lunches made by ‘mother’.

Union Pacific FEF-3 class 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive # 8444, is seen leading a rail fan excursion train along the main line on a photo run-by in Colorado, July 26, 1980. While I am taking an on coming action photo, others are preparing to take a going away photo. Many of the passengers and other rail fans not involved in photography are still aboard the train and you can see them leaning out of the baggage car doors and the vestibule dutch doors.
It’s Front End Friday aka #FEF again.
Dudley and Deliberation Dave watch the little locomotive potter in and out of the colliery pulling and pushing wagons to and from the canal coal wharf just out of shot to the left.
And whilst Dudley is normally looking at his darn notebook, today he’s testing a new fangled radio control unit. He finds this easy because he doesn’t have to change his navel gazing pose too much, which is helpful seeing he’s made of 3D printed resin.
“Radio control” I hear you sniffle, accompanied with by an adenoidal grunt as you spill your cup of tea all down your white shirt mother freshly ironed for you. Well, here’s the story; the engine has been fitted with a complex arrangement of steam powered levers and other paraphernalia which allows it to be driven remotely - Dudley in this case.
Sadly, for fireman Barclay, he has to remain in the cab moving coal around and tending to the fire. But at least at breakfast time he’ll be able to enjoy the sausages, egg and bacon all to himself that will shortly be simmering on his shovel, also known as a ‘footplate man’s fry-up’. Delicious.

Union Pacific 4-8-4 FEF-3 class ALCO Northern steam locomotive 8444 is leading an excursion train that is stopped on a siding while a freight train on the main line is passing by in Colorado, summer 1980. The freight train is led by EMD SD40-2 diesel locomotive 8077. My location for taking photos was one coach vestibule behind the baggage car, which was coupled to the tender.

Union Pacific FEF-3 class Northern 4-8-4 oil burning steam locomotive # 8444, just led a rail fan excursion train on a photo run-by in Colorado during the summer of 1980. The train passed by this location during the photo run-by and then had to back down to this location again, after the photo run-by was completed to load the passengers, of which many were photographers. The track was line up with people for almost one half mile.
Union Pacific FEF-3 class ALCO 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive # 8444, is seen while stopped on a rail fan trip out of Denver, Colorado, July 26, 1980. The rail fan trip operated from Denver to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and then with a return trip to Denver, Colorado, all in the same day. The trip was sold out and I purchased tickets about six months in advance. You can see a cab crew member leaning out of the gangway with a radio.

Photographers and observers got off the train to take photos and to watch the photo run-by. The train had a full load of passengers and was sold out. This excursion train went to Sterling, Colorado, where it was turned around for the return trip back to Denver, Colorado. You can see the fireman in his cab window looking back on the train with a 2-way radio in his hands..

First Aberdeen operated Mercedes-Benz Citaro O530G BG58 OMF - 11111 - is pictured on Union Street with a service on route 1 towards Danestone.
This vehicle wears the First Aberdeen Urban livery with red route branding for routes 1 & 2 applied so it's a tick in the allocation box here! This was one of 9 of its type in the fleet but as of March 2025 end they have all been withdrawn from service.
Behind the Citaro is Wright StreetLite DF SN14 FEF - 63207 - with a service on route 23 towards Heathryfold. This bus wears the First Olympia livery.

In this seen you can see the domed observation lounge on the 12 car train. Train crew members on top of the tender are replenishing water, while other crew members standing next to the drivers are performing the lubrication tasks. In the background you can see the water tower with the city name Sterling, Colorado applied on the side of the tank. Shortly the train will move ahead to another location where it will be turned for the return trip back to Denver,

Numerous passengers, observers, railfans and photographers are on the platforms enjoying the scene. On the nearest track is the morning departing Rio Grande Zephyr that is bound for Salt Lake City, Utah. This train is led by F9A diesel electric locomotive 5771, along with two additional F9B units and a string of Budd lightweight cars that include some dome coaches.
