Union Pacific FEF-3 Northern oil burning 4-8-4 steam locomotive # 8444 led 12 car Railfan Excursion train is seen while stopped at the station in Sterling, Colorado, Summer 1980. This train was turned at Sterling for the return trip back to Denver. Prior to turning the locomotive, the tender was being filled with water and the crew was oiling and lubricating the locomotive. There was a large crowd out and about to see the steam locomotive and there was a full load of passengers on the train. Sterling is situated in North East Colorado. Today this steam locomotive wears its original number # 844. Situated in the center background behind the train is a group of MOW cars and equipment.
First Aberdeen operated Mercedes-Benz Citaro O530G BG58 OMF - 11111 - is pictured on Union Street with a service on route 1 towards Danestone.
This vehicle wears the First Aberdeen Urban livery with red route branding for routes 1 & 2 applied so it's a tick in the allocation box here! This was one of 9 of its type in the fleet but as of March 2025 end they have all been withdrawn from service.
Behind the Citaro is Wright StreetLite DF SN14 FEF - 63207 - with a service on route 23 towards Heathryfold. This bus wears the First Olympia livery.

Union Pacific FEF-3 class ALCO 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive is stopped on a main line with its railfan excursion train in Colorado, 1980. Photographers and observers got off the train to take photos and to watch the photo run-by. The train had a full load of passengers and was sold out. This excursion train went to Sterling, Colorado, where it was turned around for the return trip back to Denver, Colorado. You can see the fireman in his cab window looking back on the train with a 2-way radio in his hands..

Union Pacific FEF-3 class 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive # 8444, is seen leading a rail fan excursion train along the main line on a photo run-by in Colorado, July 26, 1980. While I am taking an on coming action photo, others are preparing to take a going away photo. Many of the passengers and other rail fans not involved in photography are still aboard the train and you can see them leaning out of the baggage car doors and the vestibule dutch doors.

Union Pacific FEF-3 class ALCO 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive # 8444, is seen while stopped on a rail fan trip out of Denver, Colorado, July 26, 1980. The rail fan trip operated from Denver to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and then with a return trip to Denver, Colorado, all in the same day. The trip was sold out and I purchased tickets about six months in advance. You can see a cab crew member leaning out of the gangway with a radio.

A few of the cab members cab crew have their heads sticking out of the cab. Seen in the background standing on a hopper car are two railfans with cameras.
Union Pacific FEF-3 class Northern 4-8-4 oil burning steam locomotive # 8444, just led a rail fan excursion train on a photo run-by in Colorado during the summer of 1980. The train passed by this location during the photo run-by and then had to back down to this location again, after the photo run-by was completed to load the passengers, of which many were photographers. The track was line up with people for almost one half mile.

Shortly the train will move ahead to another location where it will be turned for the return trip back to Denver,

In questa storia che vi voglio raccontare
Vi parlo di un Amico, che non viene dal mare
Lui quando parla non ha peli sulla lingua
E quando scatta foto sembra proprio che dipinga.
Il primo pianto, in Via Marcello Federici
Vicino a casa mia e a quella di tanti altri amici
Io costruivo frecce, archi e cerbottane
Con le piastrelle lui giocava, o con le figurine.
Come tutti i bambini di Campo Parignano
Correva al forno, il forno di Piuccio
Comprava il pane, il pane quello buono.
Poi giocava a nascondino, proprio dietro la Chiesa
E a pallone, lì alla GIL, era forte in difesa.
E lì nessuno si faceva male
E mai nessuno finiva all'Ospedale.
S'intrufolava in Palestra, per guardare i suoi fratelli
Che saltavano leggeri tra parallele ed anelli
Erano Angeli senza ali, ma riuscivano a volare
E lui faceva capriole, felice, come al mare.
Si arrampicava a perdifiato, su alla Montagnola
Con la merenda ancora in tasca, appena uscito dalla scuola
E le farfalle gialle e nere, scappavano volando
Quando sentivano o vedevano che lui stava arrivando.
Come tutti i bambini di Campo Parignano
Con un capello, da grande esploratore
Andava al fiume e con la fionda in mano
Catturava lucertole, ranocchie e girini
Spaventava i passerotti, col fucile a piombini.
Ma mai nessuno si faceva male
E mai nessuno finiva all'Ospedale.
All'improvviso, un bel mattino, si è risvegliato grande
Le Elementari, dopo il ponte, alla Malaspina
Le Scuole Medie alla D'Azeglio e poi alle Industriali
Ora il ragazzo è quasi pronto per battere le ali.
E poi l'Amore lo sorprende, quasi come una scossa
Forse per colpa del gran caldo o della terra rossa
Ora con Anna, la sua storia diventa ancor più bella
Una casa, una famiglia ed è Lei la sua Stella.
Ma come a tutti i bambini di Campo Parignano
Gli è rimasta quella luce negli occhi
E quella voglia di correre lontano.
Con quelle foto che lui posta su Facebook
Cambia le idee pure a chi non ce le ha più.
Così nessuno si farà più male
E mai nessuno finirà più in Ospedale.
