Union Pacific FEF-3 class 4-8-4 Northern modern oil burning steam locomotive # 8444 is seen with UP EMD SD40 locomotive # 3004 ahead in the yard at Denver, Colorado, 1980. The steam locomotive is being readied for it's following day's railfan excursion. Seen in the foreground is a locomotive service and maintenance pit. This dual service steam locomotive was built by ALCO and delivered to the UP in December 1944, and it has never been retired. When the diesel electric locomotives took over the steam locomotive assignments on passenger trains this class of locomotive then went into freight service. After that the locmotive went into railfan excursion service for some years, but now it is a goodwill ambassador for PR tours and other railroad activities or functions.

Union Pacific FEF-3 class 4-8-4 Northern steam locomotive # 8444, providing a view of pilot wheels and cylinder in yard at Denver, Colorado, Summer 1980. The locomotive was just brought into the yard for service, maintenance, repair, fuel & water and cleaning prior to it's next day railfan excursion trip. This locomotive use a single guide crosshead assembly.
