I think some cycling Australians can be a little uptight about their apparel - with the fashion aspect of the sport or 'lifestyle' dominated by an predilection for varicoloured lycra and Tour de France team strips. (Ok - me for one!)
In Japan cycling is just an everyday and ubiquitous form of transport, and not something people feel the need to make a fashion statement about. They want to be fashionable in a street sense, and just happen to be getting to their destination by cycling there. I saw more cyclists than I've ever seen and not an ounce of lycra.
When Sydney cyclists potter about on folding bikes wearing high-heeled calf boots, then we will know that cycling has broken-through as a form of mass transport, that people use without a further thought, just as they use their car today.
(Yes, I'm willfully ignoring the obvious cycling safety issues in this shot.)

Valentina Vasilatou, who lives in Euston, is wearing an old black t-shirt which she transformed into a skirt, a long sleeved red top from Zara, a black cardigan from Rouge, and some chunky black boots from Stratford. The 20-year-old, who is studying costume design at Central St Martins College, only got her hair braided the night before, and although “it hurt so much [she] couldn’t sleep”, she was very pleased with the final look.
