Some 80% of Scotland’s land mass is under agricultural production, making the industry the single biggest determinant of the landscape we see around us. Scotland’s farmers, crofters and growers produce output worth around £2.9 billion a year, and are responsible for much of Scotland’s £5 billion food and drink exports. The export target for 2017 is £7.1 billion.

Around 67,000 people are directly employed in agriculture in Scotland – this represents around 8% of the rural workforce and means that agriculture is the third largest employer in rural Scotland after the service and public sectors. It is estimated that a further 360,000 jobs (1 in 10 of all Scottish jobs) are dependent on agriculture.

The agri-food sector is now the UKs largest manufacturing sector.

Around 85% of Scotland is classified as Less Favoured Area. This is an EU classification which recognises natural and geographic disadvantage.

There are large numbers of farms in north west Scotland, but these are significantly smaller in terms of the numbers of livestock/area of crops grown than farms elsewhere. Sheep farming is the predominant type of farming in the north west and there are also many sheep farms in the south of the country. Larger cereal farms are concentrated in the east. Beef farming takes place throughout Scotland, but is particularly common in the south west. This area also has the bulk of the dairy industry.

This is how silly I am. On the bike Thursday, on my way to Nynäshamn I noticed the farmers out on the field at Hammersta. There are a couple of old oaks there and I snapped a few photos of the oaks a while back. Seeing the tractor I knew that I had to get a photo with at least one oak and a tractor, and this is it. Then on Sunday, I took the same road and took even more photos of the oak, but those photos are still on the memory card.

Platte Valley Farming community around Greeley, CO. USA

Northeastern Colorado depends on Irrigation for most of it's farming communities. In the early days, Ditches were cut and used to pull water from the South Platte River basin and it's tributaries. Many of these ditches ran for miles and miles. Along the way, Farmers could use water out of the ditch, based on the exiting Water Rights. There were heated disputes, and many times battles arose over Water Rights.

As time Passed, Irrigation Wells were put in, and the water was channeled thru local ditch systems. And finally, the Pivot Sprinkler systems became popular. Pivots require a lot less work, and usually cover 80-160 acres. Water Rights in Colorado are still a Big Issue, and there are specific laws that regulate the water distribution to Individuals, businesses, and Farmers.

Many a times, when we travel to other destinations, we do not have the luxury to wait for the opportune time to take the best shots.

Anyway, I had to bring up all my experience in both Lightroom and PSP-X2 to enhance this picture. Compare it to the actual picture captured in jpeg as shown below and you will realize that it is not an easy task to edit this picture!

if at first you don't succeed, look in the trash for the instructions,
