False Kiva July 3rd, 2015
A fairly obscure archaeological site in Canyonlands. It's an interesting hike to this one, a very picturesque, non-maintained trail. If it were not a full moon at the time, I would have stuck around for a try at a Milky Way photo.
While there was evidence that people had been there earlier that day (message left in the ammo can placed by the park service at the site), I had the whole place to myself that afternoon, didn't see one person on the trail either.

False Creek Ferries, the original little blue ferries are providing Vancouver & Granville Island with year-round commuter and sightseeing ferry service since 1982.
The little ferries are pretty photogenic and I couldn't stop taking pics..:-)
In the background the Art Deco style Burrard Bridge, a steel truss bridge connecting downtown Vancouver with Kitsilano, constructed in 1930 and designed by George Sharp.
At first glance this bright yellow mushroom is confusingly similar to the chanterelle, but when you look closely the differences are clear enough. Most notably, the false chanterelle has gills, whereas the true chanterelle has just wrinkles, with a few cross-veins. Also the false chanterelle doesn't quite have the trumpet shape of a fully-grown chanterelle - they can look much more alike when very small though.
False Kiva Panorama. False Kiva, a compositionally perfect place and a photographers dream. It is an alcove in a cliff face in the canyon wall, looking out at the magnificent buttes of the Island in the Sky district in Canyonlands National Park.
A kiva is a room used by modern Puebloans for religious rituals by modern Hopi and most other Pueblo peoples, today kivas are square-walled and underground, and are used for spiritual ceremonies. Similar subterranean rooms are found among ruins in the American Southwest, indicating ritual or cultural use by the ancient peoples of the region including the Ancient Pueblo Peoples. Those used by the ancient Anasazi were usually round, and generally believed to have been used for religious and other communal purposes.

Back-lit fresh Japanese Maple leaves (Acer palmatum) - Suburban New Jersey, 25 miles west of "The City" (NYC)
A shaft of light penetrating the canopy back-lit these leaves like a neon sign. It's hard to believe (looking at it now), but some of the "shadows" of the leaves aren't really shadows, but the dark undersides of the leaves that were sheltered from the sun by the leaves over them.
Possibly one of the most poisonous fungi Amanita virosa (Kegelhütiger Knollenblätterpilz) or Amanita citrina var. citrina , False Deathcap ?
A fallen fungi provided a clear view of it`s gills next to the standing specimen

As my first posting of 2011 I thought that I'd put up something special. Not that the photograph is anything extraordinary (although I do admit it's probably in my top 10 personal favourites), but the place and the view certainly are extraordinary indeed.
This is False Kiva in Canyonlands National Park in Utah. It's the unique setting of an Anasazi ruin which forms a stone circle set within a large alcove in the cliffs below the mesa top. It's not the easiest location to reach and as a class II archaeological site it is not shown on any of the official park maps. It's absence has been the subject of some debate, but the rangers will let you view some rather brief instructions on how to get to the site if you ask at the Visitor Centre. It's not clear whether the site is of spiritual importance and/or was the site of a dwelling, as there do appear to be some small grain stores behind the stone circle. However, if you visit False Kiva you will be left in no doubt of it's spiritual and almost cathedral-like ambience which certainly suggest to me it was of great importance to the native Americans.
Don't be put off by the vastly overestimated time to reach this location quoted on some web sites, it can be reached easily in an hour from the road but does include some rock scrambling. But please do give this magnificent setting the utmost respect it deserves and leave nothing but footprints. It really is magnificent.

False garlic is a perennial plant, producing a rosette of leaves about 45cm tall from an underground bulb.
The bulb is sometimes gathered from the wild and used as a substitute for garlic. It is sometimes grown as an ornamental.
Native from southern Mexico to western South America, the species is used as an ornamental plant due to its showy inflorescences and the fragrance of its flowers.
