Fun Facts: Grand Teton National Park was created on February 29, 1929 and greatly expanded in 1950 due to the efforts of John D. Rockefeller, who purchased vast tracts of land and then donated over 30,000 acres to the U.S. Government.

This photo may have the appearance of being thoughtfully composed. In fact, we saw the train approaching from the over bridge, and didn't realise how quickly it was moving, so a sprint across the field was needed!

While clouds flare overhead, a large fragment of cap-rock rests alongside the trail and looks conspicuously out of place amongst the deeper red of the mudstones, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, Colorado.

Visiting this Monument was a prime objective of our recent Thanksgiving road-trip to the Southwestern part of the State. Abandoned cliff-dwellings and watchtowers blend in remarkably well with the landscape, being built from the native materials at hand, and my wife and boys and I were thoroughly engrossed while searching for them and imagining their creators out-loud, along with the way of life that existed here. Say what you will about America these days (and whatever it is, it would probably be accurate), but the fact that public land like this exists and anyone can go explore is largely due to Teddy Roosevelt's leadership. A vision like that, gifted to future generations as it was, still makes me proud to be an American today.

Even though the world is suffering for COVID and in Switzerland the situation is not very favorable. Somehow; the mountains are still accessible. When it comes to COVID; mountains are probably the safest places as in vast majority of them; you will mostly find yourself alone or with number of people good enough to keep at least 50 meters of social distancing.

Sure, you have to work a bit for that. If you take a cozy cable car; things are not the same. But if you go up walking; you can very much have the path as your backyard.

With several of my trip cancelled; this year I concentrated more in exploring Switzerland. One of my Swiss colleague told me that for the people leaving in Switzerland; exploring Switzerland in holiday is not considered as the exotic holiday to be proud of.

In fact I also realized that in past few years; I was mostly outside Switzerland in holidays. Even thought I used to go out most of the good weather weekends on the mountains.

This year; I found those mountains are probably the safest place to go. So I have explored many locations in Switzerland that are exceptionally beautiful and very much isolated if planned well.

This is one of those places. It snowed heavily few days back. So the mountains are still capped with snow with the last bit of autumn color still remaining.

This is a small lake just above the famous St Moritz. But this is off limit for cars. So I went out early in the dark. Well; I could have probably go 30 minutes later. But I have bad habit of reaching photo locations well in advance. So that I have enough time to setup, grab the right composition before someone else takes it and I am not that fast in setting up. So it is important for me to take the time in a calm way to achieve the best result.

So by habit, I looked around and setup the tripod low and started waiting for the light. The other side started becoming dark orange and the panic started. Am I at the wrong side of the lake? Shall I just run and get to the other side? Even though I like this composition way better; the sky may not be that attractive. At the end I decided not to rush and waited patiently. Some time later the color started coming on this side as well. Time to shoot. The water was calm, the sky was amazing, the tree colors started popping with the increase of light. What else do you want. Got the Nikon at work.

The color stayed max for 3 to 5 minutes before the sky went back to a bit greyish. I also did some video; but being a photographer, the best time is dedicated for photos. So the video off course doesn't have the same color; but was good enough to experience the environment.

However a recent visit to fladbury mill, on the River Avon between Pershore and Evesham the other week the lush green vegetation was everywhere and a warm streak of sunlight caught the south westerly windows of the old mill whilst the sun was beginning its descent into the night.

Roll on a couple of weeks since then and the continued warm weather has now turned most of the lush areas around where i live into brown sandy tones, reminiscent of some scorched earth 50's b-movie set not to in the distant future... if you believe the media that is.

Cool water and soothing greens perhaps I like you after all.

"Alcohol is a pervasive fact of life, but an extraordinary fact, pleasurable and destructive, anathematized and adulated, and deeply ambiguous ... the genie in the bottle." Griffith Edwards.

Ireland is undoubtedly a country associated with beer, and among all those produced on the island, the most famous internationally is without any doubt the one that bears the surname of Sir Arthur Guinness, who was its creator in the year 1759. Nowadays, its brewery located in Dublin is one of the most modern in the world, and can produce 3 million pints of this stout per day. Its flavor does not leave anyone indifferent, and even if it is not true, an Irish joke says that the beer is made with water from the nearby river Liffey.

Although you can enjoy a Guinness in any Irish pub, a different option is to go to the Guinness Storehouse to visit the museum that shows its history and production. The tour ends with a pint of the dark elixir in a bar located in the last floor of the building from which you have a magnificent view of Dublin.

Both my girlfriend and I avoid alcohol for most of the year, and we always advise consuming it in moderation. Still, we did not want to miss the opportunity to show this famous place in Dublin with our particular artistic touch.

-----------------------------------------

Some Vulture Facts.

Vultures are incredibly diverse. There are over 20 species found across the world.

Vultures are found on every continent except Australia and Antarctica.

Vultures lay only one egg every year or so.

A vulture can eat up to 1 kilogram (about 2 pounds) of meat in a single meal. That’s over 10% of its body weight!

In Asia, some vultures are almost extinct and have declined by 99% in just 15 years.

Vultures have huge ranges. For example, researchers found a single vulture using all of Kenya, northern Tanzania, and even going into Ethiopia and Sudan.

All vultures eat carrion or dead animals for at least part of their diet.

In ancient Egypt, vultures were used as a symbol of femininity.

In Germany, police have trained turkey vultures to help them find missing people.

Because many species of vultures are social, vultures are highly affected by poisoning. Over a hundred birds can be killed at just one poisoned carcass.

Vultures are the ultimate recyclers. They can strip a carcass in just a few hours. They keep our environment clean and disease-free.

Many thanks for your visit, comments, invites and favs..it is always appreciated.

At first glance this scene could be mistaken for a fantasy book illustration by Arthur Rackham. But it is in fact the "Eros" fountain in Sefton Park, Liverpool pictured on a misty autumn morning, with drama added by the bare branches of trees which have started to shed their leaves.

Few interesting facts Google told me....

Where are people moving to Sacramento from?

•Across the nation, 3% of homebuyers searched to move into Sacramento from outside metros. San Francisco homebuyers searched to move into Sacramento more than any other metro followed by Fresno and Houston.

•To date, nearly 14,000 families have moved to the Sacramento area from the San Francisco/Bay area.

Where are people from Sacramento moving to?

•63% of Sacramento homebuyers searched to stay within the Sacramento metropolitan area. Boise was the most popular destination among Sacramento homebuyers followed by Dallas and Portland.

The average cost of a house (4 bedroom/2.5 bath; 1678 s/f) is listing for selling for $530,000 in what is considered one of the “better” neighborhoods (low crime rate and above average school rating). Which puts the monthly payments around $3500 + per month.

I have been saying for years now, If I had to buy a house now, I would never be able to be a homeowner. Living in an apartment is just as outpriced as well. Average 2 bedroom apartment is running about $2200 per month. And our gas prices are just as crazy, averaging $4.50 for regular unleaded.

In Lincoln, CA where this photo was taken is just outside of Sacramento in the adjoining county. The housing market for the same size house is about 50-75K more.

My hope is things will get better.

First day of Autumn here in Sydney my fine flickr friends and I'm up at the right time, in great time in fact - so have time to check out Bondi - superflat, no clouds - drove to Tamarama - same, drove to Bronte - same so on I went over the Bondi border and in to foreign territory Coogee . Beautiful morning, lovely sunrise - however nothing too special going on down there apart from a fellow Irishman down the beach sitting next to me. He was still drunk from the night before telling me that we were on the right side of the beach and that we would end up millionaires where as everyone else on the other side of the beach would end up in Ikea. I, being Irish too, agreed with his wise beer sodden words however did not get the money shot whilst I was down there.

On the way home, stopped to get a paper and there he was crossing the road in the beautiful light on Bondi Road. I let him go, did not have the heart to tell him there was no surf down at Bondi and finally got my money shot .

Been super busy over the last few days with work and a wedding(not mine rest assured ;))) so bear with me whilst I catch up. Off now to check to my bank account to see if the millions have arrived yet ;)

Inscription above the entrance to "Kirkaldy's Testing and Experimenting Works" of 1874 (now a museum) at 99 Southwark Street, London. This institution was the first of its kind, that is, an independent organisation testing the quality and strength of commercial materials. I wonder whether Mr Kirkaldy had read Charles Dickens' novel "Hard Times" of 1854. Its first three sentences are:

"Now, what I want is, Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life. Plant nothing else, and root out everything else."

Five facts you need to know about gannets

1. Gannets are Scotland’s, and indeed Britain’s, largest seabird…

Scotland is responsible for a stunning number of these birds

Our country holds over 40% of the world’s total population of northern gannets, and around 180,000 pairs breed in Scotland.

2. Gannets give a whole new meaning to the word ‘speedy’…

Gannets feed on a variety of fish at sea, and to catch these fish they have to dive (makes sense). But did you know that when these seabirds actually hit the surface of the water they can be travelling as fast as 60mph?!

3. The chicks are.....unique …

When the young do fledge the nest, they are so chubby and buoyant that they’re not actually capable of surface diving! The fledglings will usually go without food for two or three weeks until they’ve slimmed down a touch and mastered diving. That’s what we mean by unique...

4. Gannets love to dine and dash…

Northern gannets don’t actually take off again with their prize though – they normally quickly swallow their fish before resurfacing, and never fly away with a meal in tow.

5. Colonies have quite a significant aroma…

OK, we’ll be honest with you. You’ll likely smell a gannet colony before you actually see it. It’s a mix of guano, fish and fresh sea air - on trips out to Bass Rock for example the smell of ammonia can reach you about ten minutes before you get to the colony!

Boccadasse is an ancient fishing village of the city of Genoa. The village with its houses in pastel colors, leaning against each other and wrapped around a small bay has remained almost unchanged over time, how you could see one or two centuries ago. The great beauty of this place is also due to the fact that this is not a simple preservation of the past for tourism, but a living and vital village, where still some fishermen continue their former activities.

I am usually not a procrastinator, but the SP project got away from me this week. I lacked inspiration and time. Excuses, excuses.

This one provided challenges for me. I actually had a completely different fact then when those pictures came out poorly I switched gears. This one fits anyway with the superbowl tomorrow.

Thanks to my friend Jon for the jersey loan. I do not have one in the house because I stuck to my vow! We will however watch the game tomorrow (I go for the food... I will be making doughnuts!)

Texture borrowed from ninianlif.

Despite the fact nearly all my photos are taken when he's outdoors, playing & exploring our local woods & farmland, this is how Flynn likes to spend the vast majority of his time: asleep on the end of my bed, on a big pile of blankets. I did have to be sneaky to get a picture of him snoozing though, as if Flynn notices me fiddling about with the camera, he assumes something exciting is going to happen (a walk? playtime? treats?!!) & instantly perks up!

Flynn had to be taught to relax & be calm in the house - there was definitely a point when he WAS that stereotypical hyperactive pet border collie (he'd go out & play for 2 hours, come home & be pinging off the door frames, barking hysterically)! However, once he realised the world wouldn't in fact end, if he stopped moving for more than 2 minutes, Flynn quickly became a big fan of sleeping!! For much of the day, he's as quiet & lazy as any happy house cat.

Like I'm sure nearly every pet owner does - I wish I knew what his dreams are like. I'd guess dog dreams are very different from ours - filled with scents perhaps, rather than mostly just pictures? My favourite moments are when I'm sitting up in bed, reading, or browsing online & suddenly, I hear the distinctive thump, thump, thump of a wagging tail. I look up & Flynn is fast asleep but his tail is wagging away happily :)

Sorry I deleted the first photo of her. Was bothered by the fact that her eyes appeared wonky and one of her earrings was displaced LOL

Cool Facts

The Red-breasted Sapsucker has two subspecies. The northern form, resident from Alaska to Oregon, is redder on the head and has less white on the back. The southern form, found in California, often shows the black and white face striping of the other sapsucker species, but all the facial feathers are tipped in red.

Hummingbirds of several species make use of sapsucker feeding holes and come to rely on them. The Rufous Hummingbird is closely associated with the Red-breasted Sapsucker. It nests near sap wells and may follow the woodpecker around during the day, feeding at the wells the sapsucker keeps flowing.

The oldest recorded Red-breasted Sapsucker was at least 5 years old when it was found after being hit by a car. It lived in British Columbia. Info from Cornell

So there I was, just trying to take a nice, normal thumb selfie when I get photo-bombed by this guy. But wait, that may be "fake news".... this is actually a newly hatched dragonfly that I found perched on the stairway leading to the lake and transferred to my thumb for a photo before his wings were capable of flight. In fact, alert viewers will note that his eyes remain cloudy, the protective coating still in place.

Please be advised that I neither "shoved" nor "body-slammed" him, nor did a single Russian influence me in the creation of this picture. And if the quality may be somewhat questionable, it is not because it was leaked by thousands of "anonymous sources close to and familiar with the circumstances." Rather the simple truth, without opinion, supposition, or innuendo, is that it was extremely difficult to keep the camera still with one hand while a dragonfly sat on the other. So endeth my Sunday op-ed.
