Enthralled by the f.64 group, about a year ago I took it upon myself to try and create an image in their impeccable style.

The most difficult project I ever undertook! Finding the right subject matter and having it presented was the first task; Cauliflower after cauliflower - it had to be sliced right. and mind you, I don't eat cauliflower regularly... finally one evening, preparing dinner I made the right cut.

The light was wrong, the shadows placed wrong - bring out the butter and let's eat.

A month later, another good slice, another failure.

I wanted to bring the intensity and BW harmonics which Weston did in his "cabbage" image or Davis did with his "artichoke" photo.

One day it all came together - the cut, the form, the design. A leaf ! Through my previous failures I knew to shoot it in dull lighting with a thin piece of paper over the light. I knew where I wanted it's shadowing and scattered dark zones. I wanted to span the zones and nuanced gray areas, and then quite unexpectedly the cauliflower started to sweat.

We look for that singular moment in street photography when everything is in perfect alignment. Little did I expect that same alignment would be necessary to achieve an f.64 photo.

I know (it's f/5.0). and yes, I could have made tis crystal clear in Photoscape, but there's more to f.64 then simple sharpness.

Now, can I do the same with film as they did?

Possibly impossible.....

I was inspired by PimpExposure to get a beach shot! Lovin all of his Jersey shore shots! Oh and I enjoyed this little beach so much that I went all weekend!

In Ancient Greek tradition, coins would be placed over the eyes of the dead so they would be able to pay the toll to Charon, ferryman of the River Styx. Occasionally the coins would be placed in the mouth instead.

I know this isn't for everyone but I shot it for round 1 of F64 Challenge: www.flickr.com/groups/flickr64challenge/discuss/721576804...

Playing with back-lighting and overexposure. Not quite the expression/hand position I wanted but the best of the series.

365 Days (self portraits): Day 134

Dead and dried out teasels, I got some strange looks as I searched the grass verge at the side of the road for dead plants.

This image was taken for the F64 challenge group, with a theme of bone dry.

The image is three shots taken with flash in 3 different positions and merged in photoshop.

And then converted to B&W.

Some photos taken at Santa Pod Raceway back in August. First is this lovely Golf, which has hasn't seen much use in past years. Current owner since 28/08/2024 which was three days before this photo was taken.

A couple of Dad's slides that got missed 10 or so years ago. Both of Light Pacific 34066 Spitfire taken on the 29th of August 1964.

The loco is seen here on the still existing Meldon Viaduct at the head of the 11.15 from Waterloo to Bude and Padstow.

New in September 1947 as 21C166 the loco was withdrawn in September 1966 and cut up at Buttigieg's in Newport in January 1967.

Firstly we are at Halwill Junction and the loco is on the 08.10 service to Wadebridge. New in September 1947 as 21C166 the loco was withdrawn in September 1966 and cut up at Buttigieg's in Newport in January 1967.

In 2024 34072 was renumbered as 34066 at the Spa Valley Railway for a weekend.

I forgot again.

To take my “shot” that is.

It’s not like I really forgot. I brought my gear with me where I was going yesterday evening and fully intended on taking my goddamn shot of the day.

But… okay yeah I guess I forgot.

I mean I talked about it.

“Fuck I need to take my shot”, I said to my company as they heard and didn’t care.

Why should they? I’m the only one that really and should give a shit.

But when I woke up at 4:00 AM to go to work on a Saturday morning because I am dirt poor the first thought that blurred out of my mouth was:

“I missed my shot!!!!!!!!!!!!”

“You’re getting lazy”, said my company as I walked out the door in the middle of the night.

I looked around as I walked to my car. Quick. Hurry. Do it now bitch. It’s just a few hours late. It’s still nighttime. Come on dude do it.

I love photos at night. They are so mystifying and eerie. Only freaks come out at night man.

And oh boy do I love freaks.

Anyway I was walking to my car and all these ideas of photos came FLOODING into my brain.

I think I feed off of pressure. Actually I know I do.

Which is kind of funny. Some days when it’s the middle of the day with many hours to spare I couldn’t come up with a shot I am happy with to spare my life. But yet when I wake up crack of before dawn with the pressure of my shot is missed post 4 hrs into the negative I flip out and have ideas flowing into my brain like a flushed toilet.

This shot? It’s me in the middle of an extremely hilly and most typical Oakland street. Hard to tell by the shot I took, but my eye first caught how fucking fascinating the hills and curves were that seemed to carry on in the background in every which way seemingly forever.

I wonder who is down that manhole?
