The Buffalo was one of the first U.S. monoplanes with an arrestor hook and other modifications for aircraft carriers. It won a competition against the Grumman F4F Wildcat in 1939 to become the U.S. Navy's first monoplane fighter aircraft.

Taken in Pensacola, Florida, USA at the National Museum of Naval Aviation. The F4F Wildcat was a carrier-based fighter used by the US Navy in WWII. It was introduced in 1940 by Grumman.
My original LEGO model of the F4F-4 Wildcat. It features retractable landing gear, stowable wings, spinning prop, room for a minifig pilot, and retractable tail hook. Modeled in Sand Blue and Light Bluish Grey.

The Grumman F4F Wildcat, initially known as the Martlet, was a carrier-based fighter aircraft used by the U.S. Navy and British Royal Navy during World War II. Although outperformed by the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero, the Wildcatβs durability and tactical advantages allowed it to hold its own in the Pacific Theatre. Later replaced by more advanced fighters like the F6F Hellcat, the Wildcat remained an important asset in the early stages of the war.
I believe that the Wildcat in the foreground is an F4F-3, 12290. According to Joe Baugher's serial number database, the Dauntless in the background is actually an A-24B, 42-54654.*

The Royal Navy had a high opinion of this aircraft, with the Fleet Air Arm ordering it even prior to the US Navy, initially renaming it the Martlet, though later in the war renaming it back to Wildcat.
The Fleet Air Arm eventually ordered nearly 1200 aircraft of the type.
