In May of 1995, a former Santa Fe F45 (blt. June 1968) was rebuilt by MK in Boise and leased to the Utah Railway Company for six years. Here the 9013 basks in the warm morning sunlight at Martin, Utah, awaiting a call to serve on the swing helper to Soldier Summit on July 15, 1995. Late in 2009, the locomotive found rebirth as a Luxury Locomotive Lodge in Essex, Montana, interior components removed and painted in Great Northern Sky Blue paint, and available for rent.

BN train #77 (Houston to Seattle) passes Train 178 (my train) at the east switch for "Wade" siding, headed by an F45 + six units including another F45, two SD45's, two U33c's, and an SD40-2 (6619....) We had left the yard at Laurel a few miles back, and paused on the steady climb out of the valley of the Clark's Fork of the Yellowstone River. After the meet, the climb would continue to "Warren" at the Wyoming state line, and commence a fairly steady downhill race to Greybull, our home terminal. New Year's Day of 1980 would find me doing what I did for most of the next 32 New Years celebrations...running a train! I actually did my one and only bar-hopping New Year's to bring in 1979, in Alliance, Nebraska, and all I recall is that it was 35-below-zero and all the steam blowing out on to Box Butte Avenue as the bar doors were opening and closing! This was a better way.
WC had just bought the "ore lines" a few days prior to this shot at Little Lake as 6653 and 6522 bring 64 loads east at Little Lake on February 9, 1997.

A new local cat that has started visiting the garden. Shot through the kitchen window in very low light but with an obscenely priced lens I’ve current got to test with. Very impressive for 1/50th hand held at 800mm equivalent!
Extra BN 6610 East F-45 the old fashioned way. This train ran against the current Newport to St.Croix Tower thus here where no train order rack. Let's do it manually. That's 1st tricker Don doing the honors. I did it the standard way, touch the hoop to the rail then extend up to window. Puts you closer to train, but not requiring brakman to climb down there. I can always step back. This no longer necessary with radio track warrants, computer,PTC, Sputnik dispatching, etc.
WB with F45 6643 and another F45 meets a train coming out of the yard at Savanna, Il, with U33C 5750 and U25C 5663 at what they called stock yards which was the east end of double track ABS and the start of single track CTC.
After the Ex DSS&A line was abandoned east of Raco this location went from Soo Junction to Raco Junction in the SOO's nomenclature. To this day most locals refer to it as Soo Junction. Anyway in mid October 1995 WC F45 6654, along with 6501, 2401 and DMIR 171 head an SPLD east with 51 cars at 9AM. I was invited aboard and ran from here to Trout Lake. Later on near the end of the WC I ran this big wagon again and it turned out to be the last unit I ever pulled a throttle on. If ya gotta go at least I went out in style:)!
A bitter 1992 winter's morning finds the latest horsepower for the Wisconsin & Southern, sitting idle on the dolly in Horicon. Former Transisco Tours F45 would soon go to the WC at North Fond Du Lac for mechanical work and a new crimson and gray dress. Running the F45's on the WSOR, was like riding a wild bucking horse. In 1994, the 1001 was sold to the MRL and became MRL391.

Train 34 used to be a late evening job at Trout Lake and this late August shot would be one of my last of 34 until the following spring in Trout Lake, but what a way to end! 6655, 4505 and 4009 lead 69 cars into the evening sun near milepost 448 on August 29, 1996. As added interest there is 2-3 bright red ballast cars about 5-6 cars deep in the train that appear to be former ore cars from somewhere.
High on a cliff near Hawk Junction F45 6655 leads 6507, 6597, 6004 and 2252 downgrade a few miles south of town. This is train 11 the overnight freight from Sault Ste. Marie making its morning arrival at Hawk with 90 cars on May 3, 1998.....and yes the black flies were BAD!
WC's F45's looked good year round but I always thought they looked great in the snow with low winter light. It was late February 2007 when I shot 6653, 1761 and 2005 working west of Trout Lake with a heavy SOGBA.
A closer view of the power on Amtrak #3, the Super Chief, with three Santa Fe units for power and steam FP45 5944 in the red and silver paint scheme, F45 5932 in the original blue freight paint scheme, and F7B number unknown in red and paint scheme, is on the Cajon Pass south track with the 3% downhill grade coming into Cajon siding in the early morning of April 1973.
Former Wisconsin & Southern F45 No. 1002, now Montana Rail Link No. 392, leads a helper set into Helena, Montana, after pushing a train over Mullan Pass on July 4, 1994. Before a short life on WSOR, No. 392 was Transcisco No. 1002, NRE No. 6642, and was built new as No. 6642 for the Burlington Northern in May 1971.
It always made for a great day to catch an F45 leading. Today it was an F45, C30-7, and another F45 sporting the red and yellow paint scheme.

WC train ESSOA rolls down the hill west of Trout Lake with the ore loads for Algoma Steel on July 17, 1997. 6654 and 3017 have 44 loads on a warm summer morning and after a meet with there westbound counterpart at Trout Lake will be off to Soo Yard.

An F45/SD45 power set for Wisconsin Central train GBHA (Old symbol T218) has come down from North yard in Green Bay and is waiting at Tavil while intermodal ramp switch job Y1971 pulls GBHAs train out of the Oakland Avenue yard.
As soon as the full train is out on the main line the road power will ease back to tie on and with the assistance of Y1971s crew back at the rear, an air test will be performed. – June 6th, 2001 ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©
Wisconsin Central eastbound freight T178 parked behind two F45's (6655-6653), strategically next to an old feed mill I had passed many times on the train. I wanted a shot of it with a train, but Gilman is not the kind of place you drive through on your way to or from anywhere. Having to await trackwork or maybe the arrival of an opposing train in Gilman's 3700-foot siding (many ore trains would fit), I had a perfect opportunity to get the shot I wanted without blocking crossings.
