We can have flare Friday and/or F-unit Friday and this week seeing as I haven't posted a WC F45 in a long time I'll do that...no danger of me running out of them just haven't got around to any lately. On February 20, 1999 the 6653, 1761 and 2005 head the SOGBA by the depot at Trout Lake. With around 8000 tons already and more pick ups to be made before Gladstone this lash will get a good workout on the way west.

Utah Railway F45 6606 stands in the road’s yard in Martin, Utah. It appears to have a severe case of runny paint, or more likely, has blown oil all over its roof.

In late June 1988, I accompanied my friend Mike Devlin and his son on a railfan trip to California and Arizona. Our goal was to photograph certain shortlines and the Santa Fe. We were also seeking Southern Pacific subject matter that we would not normally see in our hometown of Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Our first day in Arizona was Sunday, June 26th. Because of a technological issue with the relatively new rear end devices, we discovered that many Santa Fe trains were operating with manned cabooses. Our time along the ATSF mainline was somewhat limited, because we had to be in Superior the following morning to catch the Magma Arizona Railroad.

We got as far east as Hackberry, catching a pair of trains there, including a 608 train led by an F45. The dispatcher advised both of these jobs he needed them to get through an area of single tracking near the Kingman airport as soon as possible, because a fleet of eastbounds was stacking up west of Kingman.

Armed with this information, we decided to go to Kingman Canyon, shoot a few trains, and then head for Superior. As I hiked up a hill to get a broadside of a 951 train heading east on the iconic "Santa Fe" trestle, the train with the F45 we had photographed at Hackberry also rolled into view. As it happened, not only did I get images of the locomotives passing, but the trains lined up their cabooses for me.

As time has passed, observers of the first image have noted that the locomotives represent both Santa Fe's failed merger with Southern Pacific, and the later merger with Burlington Northern that resulted in today’s BNSF. Finally, besides Kingman Canyon itself, there is one item from this amazing experience that is still with us today. Caboose ATSF 999465 at the rear of the westbound 608 train is now stuffed and mounted in Escalon, California.

Trailing are SD45s 6617, 6497 and 6606 on the 88 car train. Although it seemed hotter than hell this Sunday, I wrote in my notebook the Irene detector said 91 degrees as he passed..

I saw this object in the eastern sky at 0430 in the morning, it might be Venus. It was super bright and rising slowly.

After further research I found this: You’ve seen Venus before dawn, yes? You can’t miss it, as the brightest planet, rising in the east before the sun. Venus will reach its greatest elongation – its greatest apparent distance from the sunrise – on October 23.

"Venus"

A goddess on a mountain top

Was burning like a silver flame

The summit of beauty and love

And Venus was her name

She's got it

Yeah baby, she's got it

Well, I'm your Venus

I'm your fire

At your desire

Well, I'm your Venus

I'm your fire

At your desire

Her weapons were her crystal eyes

Making every man mad

Black as the dark night she was

Got what no one else had

She's got it

Yeah baby, she's got it

Well, I'm your Venus

I'm your fire

At your desire

Well, I'm your Venus

I'm your fire

Utah Railway F45 No. 6613 has been serviced and awaits assignment in Provo, Utah on Oct. 5, 1985. It was built Great Northern No. 440 by EMD in July 1969.

With three SD45s and an F45 for power, a Utah Railway coal empty blasts through Springviille, Utah on the road to mines the evening of Sept. 16, 1986.

We were dodging thunderstorms just out of Winslow, AZ, the town made famous by the Eagles. We were traveling west on the famous Mother Road, Route 66, when we spotted a headlight of an eastbound on the famous TransCon, the Santa Fe. You can see that one gully washer had just drenched the area, giving me some quick dry time to catch F45 5902 leading quite a loco consist. There's a GP30 tucked in back there somewhere. I made the stop as quickly as possible not wanting to get soaked. And also, because my traveling companions were not railfans and were threatening to have me committed.

I seriously enjoyed the WC's F45 fleet and they put in more than a few appearances up here and I never let a chance to shoot one get away. This is late evening LO-34 near my parents house west of Trout Lake with 6655, 4505 and 4009 leading 69 cars on August 29, 1996.

Santa Fe westbound #1 "San Francisco Chief" approaches W.14th St. after departing Dearborn Street Station behind FP45, F45 (5946-5932.) The SF Chief used what was known as the "southern route" across northwest Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle to the West Coast, avoiding Raton Pass and Albuquerque, but including Wichita and Amarillo. Most of its route was shared with the greater portion of Santa Fe's freights to and from the Golden State and of course it's route is now called the "Transcon." In so doing, it connected to other services on secondary lines and to trains that reached Houston and Fort Worth. This meant adding and subtracting sleepers at a lot of places along the way. The train survived up to Amtrak's takeover. Another hazy summer day witnesses the long consist of both hi-level coaches and single level cars - mostly sleepers - with plenty of power to pull it.

Morrison-Knudsen EMD F45 No. 5525 sits in Martin, Utah, on September 7, 1995, while serving Utah Railway. The paint job certainly doesn’t conceal it’s former days as Santa Fe No. 5950. M-K had seven former F45s in its fleet, with MKCX No. 5531 becoming Utah Railway No. 9013, and the other six, including this one, were eventually scrapped.

The appearance of F45s in the Twin Ports was a fairly rare occurrence so when one showed up I usually tried to get a shot, even if it was cloudy. Here 6645 (built for BN in 1971) rests on the service track at Belknap Street in 1984. By late 1986 this F45 would be retired.

WCL eastbound freight T004 awaits meet behind two Santa Fe units: F45, SD45 (5972-5341.) The Santa Fe units leading this train - my train today - from Superior to Stevens Point are on lease from Santa Fe until a lien has been paid, freeing Santa Fe to sell them outright to a power short Wisconsin Central. Here we wait on the main line, about sixty miles south of Lake Superior, for a northbound set of ore empties. Actually, I think we're eastbound and the ore empties are westbound, as the Soo Line's directional orientation was kept until the CN started closing in; then northbound and southbound came into use. The stone building on the left was a common fixture on the Soo Line, and I think they were there for pumping stations for a water tank. This would have been an ideal place for such, as we had just come up a steady nine miles of upgrade - not too severe but enough to be a workout for steam engines. AND there was a lake just to the left that would supply the water. The ever frugal Soo Line certainly thought they would make an indestructible section shed, too! After our meet was completed, we would continue our steady uphill climb for another six miles or so to the future site of "Bigfoot" siding, where we would crest over and leave the Lake Superior watershed.

Another reepost: BN eastbound freight #78's Extra headed by two F45, SD45 with 106 cars and caboose. this high priority frreight was reputedly the longest single freight schedule, from Seattle to Houston, and including what at that time was still the Colorado & Southern and Fort Worth & Denver subsidiaries.

Former Santa Fe F45 #92 heads out of the diesel shops at IRM to pair up with #6976 and lead the final train of the day. The museum has owned this engine since May 1997, when it was donated by BNSF. It was initially a static display piece until 2010, when the unit was used as a control cab. NRE in Silvis, IL later outfitted #92 with a new engine, enabling it to pull trains on its own as of 2018.

Just getting a freight on the big bridge at Montreal River Falls was a PITA...getting one with an F45 on the point was....well about nothing short of a miracle. I'd been up shooting the Hawk Junction/Wawa area and was surprised to see southbound freight 10 sitting by the depot about 9AM. This was far off schedule as 10 usually departed in late evening. Train 11 had derailed one wheel set of the last car on the train the previous evening near Frater and had spent quite awhile fiddling around trying to rerail it overnight. Finally short on time 11 had just left the offending car sitting, still off the track for this job to deal with in daylight. We could hear all this drama on our radio (Thanks Carl if your on flickr). Anyway we shot this job leaving Hawk and near Limer and Perry then decided to try for the bridge shot even though the road was often gated and was/is private. Over the years I had made friends with one of the power company(that owned the road)employees so I figured I'd just drop his name and hope for the best if questioned. In any case the chance for an F45 on the bridge called for desperate measures:). The car at Frater was rerailed fairly quickly with the help of MOW and the train proceeded south before the light was very good but here's 10 on the bridge with 6651, 6631 and 6592 leading 51 cars towards Sault Ste. Marie in late May 1996.

Wearing a coat of paint that is literally hours old, New York, Susquehanna & Western F45 6370 leads an inspection trip west across the Ramapo River in Oakland, New Jersey. This is my first view of the big yellow and black EMD, which is also the first F45 to wear the paint of a railroad that was not in the western United States. In about ten miles, the dignitaries aboard the theater car are going to get their first view of a portion of a recently-revived portion of the Susquehanna main line that has been out of service since 1968. When they arrive at the one-time interchange with the Lehigh & Hudson River at Sparta Junction, they will inspect the Susquehanna’s newest acquisition, the former L&HR main from Sparta Junction to the New York state line. The first stack train operated over this route two months earlier, but this was the first inspection of the route.

Exquisite blooms, with the sheen of satin.

When the Susquehanna won the right to run haulage trains over Conrail’s Southern Tier line between the Southern Division in Little Ferry and the Northern Division in Binghamton, it acquired five C430’s to handle the additional traffic. The Alco’s immediately became the darlings of the mid-Atlantic, and drew many railfans to the Southern Tier. The addition of stack train service created a further need for the Susquehanna to seek additional power. This need was filled by a bunch of 45-seried EMD’s, from the BN. Most were SD45’s, but two F45’s were part of the deal. Other than SDP40F’s and F40PH’s in Amtrak and regional commuter service, cowl units were the domain of western Class 1’s and never were operated by eastern railroads. Suddenly, the most desirable units on the Susquehanna’s roster were the two F45’s.

I was aware that one of the cowls had gone south to Potomac Yard on the previous day. Due to other commitments, I did not catch the train coming out of Philadelphia. By the time I could get free, my best option was to head to Allentown to get this shot of the train entering the yard. Unfortunately, due to the reversal of the train to proceed west on the former CNJ/LV, the F45 would be behind the two CSX units that accompanied it.

Former Santa Fe EMD F45 No. 5972 leads a Fox Valley & Western freight picking up cars at Chicago & North Western’s Butler Yard in Wisconsin on January 1, 1995. FV&W was a “paper railroad” operated as a subsidiary of Wisconsin Central formed to operate portions of former Green Bay & Western and Fox River Valley railroads that WC merged in 1993. Trailing No. 5972 is a Santa Fe SD45 and C&NW GP50, while a headlight from a following C&NW train waiting behind to pull forward to the yard office can be seen. WC acquired 31 SD45s and two F45s from Santa Fe in August 1994—and bought one more SD45, a FP45 and four more F45s a few months later in May of 1995.
