Treehouses face wind forces normally found only come late summertime in the Florida keys. Reinforcing key joints means everything stays in place.
This is my little entry for Texting While Sewing 2. When I first read about the contest coming back, I was actually on vacation, so I wasn't sure I would be able to participate...But the temptation was just too strong!
The challenge this year was to sew a bag or pouch that incorporated a zipper and used text fabrics creatively. I don't usually actually read my text fabrics, but when I sat down to do so, it seemed like a newspaper was the best block for me to design. I'd been holding onto a small scrap of Heather Ross's farmer's market print for years and years, and decided I finally had a project worthy of it.
Drafting the paper-piecing block was interesting and an exercise in working backwards. I decided what pieces I wanted in the block, and then I measured the finished sizes of the text pieces, and then allotted space for it on my pattern. (That probably sounds completely unclear...)
The pouch pattern itself is Anna Graham/Noodlehead's tablet case from Handmade Style (just a touch smaller). I'm really really pleased with how this came out! The one thing I'm not that keen on is the bias binding -- I think I chose the right print, but diagonal prints always come out a little boring when you cut them on the bias!
Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday!

My extra little dead Clawdeen that got from Requiem. Clawdeen doesn't utilize red nearly enough. Hoping one day there'll be a clawdeen fashion with some red in it. Little Dead is way to pretty to change.

Their usual drab military paint enlivened with bright pink stripes and numbers, three National Guard Blackhawk helicopters have been located to a helibase in Auberry, CA to assist in fighting the Creek Fire. The Blackhawks will be used to drop up to 650 gallons of water or retardant at a time by using devices called Bambi buckets which are suspended under the helicopter from cables and are filled by dipping them in water while in a hover. Two CH-46 Chinooks have been dedicated by the Guard to also support the fire. Those helicopters will be based in Fresno and will respond as needed.
The white pearl on the left side of this Picture of the Week is one of the Exoplanets in Transits and their Atmospheres telescopes — ExTrA for short. Located at ESO’s La Silla Observatory at an altitude of 2375m, ExTrA is a French national project comprising three 60 centimetre telescopes that are working towards one goal: to detect Earth-sized planets in our home galaxy, the Milky Way.
ExTrA focuses on planets around very small stars, with a radius down to a tenth of the Sun. It relies on the so-called transit method, looking for slight dips in the light emitted from a star when a planet passes in front of it, like a tiny eclipse. The smaller the star is, the larger the dip an Earth-sized planet will cause. Each telescope observes a target star and four reference ones to calibrate the effects of Earth’s atmosphere. The telescopes can observe either the same patch of the sky or different ones; the light they collect is sent to a single infrared spectrograph that breaks it up into different colours or wavelengths, thus combining the classic transit method with spectral information.
Not only do ExTra telescopes make great exoplanet hunters, they also make pretty good picture frames. Just kidding, but can you see the telescope peaking through the frame of the door of the dome? It’s the ESO 3.6-metre telescope. Also, ExTrA are not the only triplets at La Silla: in this image we can also see the three BlackGEM telescopes.

A bottle of Achel Extra Bruin from Brouwerij der Trappistenabdij De Achelse Kluis in Hamont-Achel, Belgium.
Achel Extra Bruin is 9.5% abv quadrupel style beer from the smallest and newest trappist brewery in Belgium. After closing their brewery during World War I, the monks at De Achelse Kluis decided to start brewing again in the late 1990s and received help from the trappist monks at Westmalle to get started in 1998. Today, they brew just 4,500 hL beer annually - even less than the rare Westvleteren.
This bottle had been in cold storage for several years, it listed a best before date of April 2013, so it was well aged by the time it was opened on New Year's Eve 2012. It poured a dark golden brown color with a beige head. When it warmed up I got a rich aroma of dried fruits and caramel. Mouthfeel was medium to full bodied with a soft carbonation. Flavor started out with a good malt character, again caramel but also dried fruits - such as dates and prunes , which lingered in the long aftertaste. A rich and well balanced quadrupel, simply delicious.

LANDOVER, Md. -- Kirk Cousins still has thrown for more interceptions than touchdown passes in the NFL. And it's going to take some work to get his 4-9 record as a starter above the .500 mark.
At least the earnest, soft-spoken, fourth-year quarterback for the Washington Redskins now has a signature victory, thanks to a fourth-quarter comeback and a zero-turnover performance.
Cousins capped a 90-yard drive with a go-ahead, 4-yard TD toss to Pierre Garcon with 26 seconds left Sunday, lifting the Redskins past the Philadelphia Eagles 23-20 on Sunday.
"That final drive -- I wasn't capable of doing that when I came in the league as a rookie. It takes time. It takes failure. It takes learning from experiences," said Cousins, who earned the starting QB job ahead of 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III in preseason. "A culmination of, I guess it would be, three-plus seasons' worth of work got me to a point where I was able to make the necessary plays on that drive."
Sam Bradford threw three second-half touchdown passes for the Eagles (1-3), who trailed 13-0 at halftime. Their new kicker, Caleb Sturgis, missed an extra-point attempt and a 33-yard field-goal try -- four big points in what turned out to be a three-point, back-and-forth game.
"It's tough knowing I didn't do my part," said Sturgis, signed last week to replace the injured Cody Parkey.
Starting at its own 10 with a little more than six minutes remaining, Washington (2-2) used a balance of runs -- five for 41 yards -- and passes -- Cousins went 6 for 10 for 44 yards -- to work its way down the field to take the lead for good.
"A lot of dinking and dunking and shallow crosses and running game," Eagles defensive coordinator Bill Davis said.
Cousins' last three completions went to Garcon, for a total of 32 yards.
"He is one of the greatest competitors on this football team," coach Jay Gruden said about Garcon, "and people feed off of that."
On the winning score, the Eagles sent a blitz at Cousins, but he put the football in a tight window, and Garcon did the rest.
"I felt hits from all over, from everybody," said Garcon, who played the closing minutes despite what Washington said was a sprained knee. "I looked and I was glad I was on the other side of the (goal) line, instead of, you know, a yard short."
Cousins finished 31 for 46 for 290 yards, the one TD -- and, most importantly for a guy with a pair of two-interception games already this season, no turnovers. He did fumble a snap in the first half at Philadelphia's 1, but recovered it and plunged forward for a touchdown, with the help of a push from running back Matt Jones.
It was the first rushing TD allowed by Philadelphia this season.
Bradford was 15 for 28 for 270 yards, with touchdown passes of 62, 39 and 10 yards. He entered the game with three TD tosses all season and hadn't completed a pass of at least 40 yards until one that went for 45 to Nelson Agholor in the second quarter. Symbolic of the way things are going for coach Chip Kelly's much-ballyhooed system this season, though, Agholor couldn't handle a pitch from Ryan Mathews on a reverse on the very next play, resulting in a fumble.
DeMarco Murray, who missed last week's victory over the Jets with a leg injury, gained 36 yards on eight carries. He voiced disappointment with the way he's being used by Kelly.
After leading the NFL in rushing last season for Dallas, Murray joined Philadelphia as a free agent, and has 47 yards on 29 carries so far.
Asked if he's getting the ball enough, Murray replied: "No, I'm not. I don't think I am. But it's how the plays are being called. I love this offense, I love playing with these guys. It's just how it is."
