The reason this breed of horse went extinct is that it didn't eat enough.

Monarch butterflies, so familiar throughout my life, are now classified as endangered, or "not extinct." I was happy to see this one recently.

Am I right that 'point and shot' cameras are about to disappear as they are replaced by smartphones?

This maiden is an Ultra-Orthodox Jew, and as such do not own a smartphone (in which she might, dangerously, surf); therefore, she still uses this tiny camera.

Incredible to think that future generations will see things like this in museums!!!

Just before Flickr was down for maintenance on 23 May my total views were just about to pass 16 million. But when Flickr returned the following day my views had dropped by more than 2 million, to well below 14 million. But now they are just over 15.8 million, yet I have only had 165,000 views since 23 May. So I am still about 350,000 views short, but nowhere near as bad as it was. But I don't look at my stats frequently so I don't know when they (largely) returned.

Anyway, back to the photograph which shows a Razorbill flying straight towards me with its wings and feet splayed. It was flapping furiously when I took this, even though it looks like it is soaring on thermals. It was taken at 1/1600 and you can see that even at that speed the wing tips have motion blur. I took the photograph at Bempton Cliffs in East Yorkshire.

These birds have been known as Razorbills (or Razor bill) since the late seventeenth century. Prior to that they were simply known as Auk (which is now a generic term for the Puffin, Razorbill, Guillemot family). So the extinct Great Auk was so named because it looked like a giant Razorbill. I always thought the name Razorbill came about because the bird's beak looks a little like a cutthroat razor, but it was named because the edges of the bill are remarkably sharp.

Tronador is an extinct stratovolcano in the southern Andes, located along the border between Argentina and Chile, near the Argentine city of Bariloche. The mountain was named Tronador (Spanish for Thunderer) by locals in reference to the sound of falling seracs. With an altitude of 3,470 m, Tronador stands more than 1000 m above nearby mountains in the Andean massif, making it a popular mountaineering destination. Located inside two National Parks, Nahuel Huapi in Argentina and Vicente Pérez Rosales in Chile, Tronador hosts a total of eight glaciers, which are currently retreating due to warming of the upper troposphere.

Taken this morning after having to leave my house at 2.45 to get there in time for a sunrise. No sunrise but got some lovely mist which hung around just long enough to fire off a few shots before it was burnt away by the rising temperature.

Bodiam Castle is a 14th-century moated castle near Robertsbridge in East Sussex, England. It was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight of Edward III, with the permission of Richard II, ostensibly to defend the area against French invasion during the Hundred Years' War. Of quadrangular plan, Bodiam Castle has no keep, having its various chambers built around the outer defensive walls and inner courts. Its corners and entrance are marked by towers, and topped by crenellations. Its structure, details and situation in an artificial watery landscape indicate that display was an important aspect of the castle's design as well as defence. It was the home of the Dalyngrigge family and the centre of the manor of Bodiam.

Possession of Bodiam Castle passed through several generations of Dalyngrigges, until their line became extinct, when the castle passed by marriage to the Lewknor family. During the Wars of the Roses, Sir Thomas Lewknor supported the House of Lancaster, and when Richard III of the House of York became king in 1483, a force was despatched to besiege Bodiam Castle. It is unrecorded whether the siege went ahead, but it is thought that Bodiam was surrendered without much resistance. The castle was confiscated, but returned to the Lewknors when Henry VII of the House of Lancaster became king in 1485. Descendants of the Lewknors owned the castle until at least the 16th century.

By the start of the English Civil War in 1641, Bodiam Castle was in the possession of John Tufton. He supported the Royalist cause, and sold the castle to help pay fines levied against him by Parliament. The castle was subsequently dismantled, and was left as a picturesque ruin until its purchase by John Fuller in 1829. Under his auspices, the castle was partially restored before being sold to George Cubitt, 1st Baron Ashcombe, and later to Lord Curzon, both of whom undertook further restoration work. The castle is protected as a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Monument. It has been owned by The National Trust since 1925, donated by Lord Curzon on his death, and is open to the public.

Little game? Brown bears or white bears, which will become extinct first? Today I'm sour, I feel the breath of the circus on my neck like a lion (and in fact my sign is lion).

Partitina? Orsi bruni o orsi bianchi, chi si estinguerà prima? Oggi sono acida, mi sento sul collo il fiato del circo come un leone (e infatti il mio segno è leone).

This Butterfly is officially extinct in the UK, but there is a small colony in the West Midlands at the moment in a small Nature Reserve. They have clearly been released there by someone.

Merci beaucoup pour vos visites et commentaires ♥

Énorme oiseau blanc à long cou et bec entièrement noir.

This is another version of my recent picture Prehistoric Sunset on the Marsh. I removed the dinosaurs from that one and replaced them with balloons. At least balloons aren't extinct...although after this picture they may have to go into hiding for a while.

Bonorong is a Sanctuary for wildlife run by a passionate team of like-minded people. We’re a social enterprise: a little business with a biiiig heart. The skills and funds generated through the Sanctuary allow us to proactively address problems in our surrounding environment and communities.

A visit to Bonorong is a chance to come closer than ever to something wild and fragile. You’ll come face to face with animals that went extinct long ago in other parts of Australia — the same animals we’re working hard to protect now.

. . . unless collectively, we all agree to save the planet that supports us.
