Low-lying fog greeted us at sunrise again this morning.
But the main cause for celebration? My IT Doc spouse managed to retrieve some 370GB of photos for the year 2016. I experienced what I thought was user error yesterday.
Instead my husband discovered a system failure probably in the external backup drive I used--for security. I have another backup drive, but that doesn't include the past three months of moving.
Are all those great photos that he retrieved great? Nope, but they're back and I'm grateful that a) I married an IT geek and b) that it wasn't user error, again.

Celebrating my husband's hours of work and the small things. Many thanks for your fun and tolerant comments.
Preparing to back up first the media on the 3TB drive, and the next day, or once this finishes the 4TB photo drive to the Drobo.
I currently have three. There probably will be an fourth M1 MacMini (rather than Intel) before the summer is over.
it was a long night/day at werk for a major feature launch. i had a few moments, so i took the opportunity to lay out the contents of my bag. see notes for details. [missing from photo: my canon a640, which i used to take the picture.]
** For the curious: the VQ 1015 Entry took the majority of the pictures currently in this set. (Noted as such in tags.) I'm in love with that thing.
31st March 2018:
All backed up. Or almost, this has got to go onto my external hard drive!
Now all backed up. :)

I haven’t done a “What’s in Your Bag?” a.k.a. “What’s in My Bag?” in years, so here’s one; more or less. I left out the gold bricks, 9,000 carat diamonds, priceless Van Gogh phone doodles and the one-pound block of the lapis lazuli that Michaelangelo used to make pigments for his Vatican fresco. I’m carrying that, too; in a box designed and hand-built by Leonardo da Vinci.
I bought this external drive on Saturday evening; Sunday mid-night, I started to transfer my images folders to this drive.
The smaller folder with 6.3GB is done with no failure.
However, when I transfering My-Photos folder which is with almost 200GB of images on it; I make sured that it is about 1/3 have bbenn transferred then I go to bed @ 4.00am.
Then @ 7.00am sunday morning, I found that the eror messgae come up image 1449 connot complete...
Next "USB device Not Recognized"
I then goes through the process to check wirring.. check MSN online help...
Check website. The manufacturer website was down. & there are scam site which attempt to get me to pay for their service.
I sent an email to the tech support of the manufacturer & hope that they would response to me in the 1st thing in the morning.
On monday; I called the manufacturer office 5 times; all the time is on the computer record messages.
finally last night; I manage to enter the site to filled up the tech support form & register warranty.. Again; I get no answer.
Tuesday morning I called 4 times. then I called the mainline & spoken to the Marketing people. They told me oh.. our office have moved.. phone number have changed..
What in the business of Information technology & internet.. all these informations are not updated ..
My lord..... thanks God..Buddha...Alah.....Lao Zi.....you name it ; I mentioned it....
The tech support guy is connected ; he then told me to send back the above to them. He said it is most likely is the USB interface broken; however, if it is drive crashed, then ask me to have 2 choice,
1. Get a replacement drive new. Without my Images folders.
2. They would return the drive to me, I have to get a Data Recovery Co, to recover the images at my own cost..
Can you imaging what kind of support policy for an brand new out of the box drive.!!
I said: Sorry; I cannot answer you this...
As in my opinion & commercial practise. You shall take care of the warranty repair. Especially , this drive already have some important images transfered..
Can you see & understand, how the commercial world evolved!!
Only back to the personal touch then company can survive...
Is a sad world for now.

Sorry to read of James's problem with his hard disk! I'm pleased to say that hasn't happened to me but should that ever happen I won't lose my photos as I back them up on a regular basis on two external hard drives ... just in case I do have a problem with one of them!
The other thing I do is upload my photos to Dropbox where they are all safe and sound and that gives me another good back-up!

Since I'm doing a 365 Project and do some sort of editing to all my photographs, I thought I'd share my Photo Lab where all the magic happens!! Just kidding folks...truth is, I really need to upgrade since this laptop is somewhere around 5 or 6 years old. Maybe one day soon...
Three bracketed photos were taken and combined with Photomatix to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop.
By the way, the photo on the screen of my computer can be seen here:

January 2, 2011 - Iomega 500GB Silver Prestige Mac, WD 160GB Red Passport Windows, WD 3TB Black Elements Windows, and WD 120GB Black Passport Windows (in background Macbook Pro with 500GB HD). Found a Free Western Digital (WD) Hard Drive Disk (HDD) Formatter on the Western Digital website called the "Quick Formatter for Windows or Mac", and used it to format the above 3TB and 120GB. Easy, fast, and does the job better than any other program out there. This will save you time and money in many different ways.
See direct link to Western Digital Website:

WD Quick Formatter to format external drives: Microsoft (Windows 7, Vista, XP) or Apple (Mac OSX, Leopard, Snow Leopard, or Lion)
If you are like me and take a lot of pictures daily, you will end up having the internal hard drive on your computer that will become slower at photo editing and processing due to all of the images you load on to it. My brother (network and help desk manager) told me to load as much data on an external hard drive to allow the computer to run the operating system and programs as fast as it can without having to read/write to different sectors of your hard drive as you work on your images. The computer's HDD spins to run programs, while the external's HDD spins to read data.
Since Mac format is a higher price for same amount of date space when purchasing HDDs with USB 2.0 connection* (it is a higher price if you purchase a HDD with FireWire connection to Mac) I felt I could save some money by purchasing the Windows Formatted WD 3TB HDD. But I had such a hard time reformatting from Windows OS to Mac OS using the Mac programs and other free on-line programs. After my many attempts to format the 3TB HDD had failed, I searched the WD website and found the Western Digital program that works without any issues or failed reformats.
*Please note not sure if all of this information is the same for USB 3.0 Hard Drives.
Something else that may help to know is that I had issues with the older WD 120GB Black Passport above (I had stopped a reformat from Windows to Mac, with Mac reformatter after about 4 hours, which caused drive to be unreadable by both Mac and Windows computers, not good). After giving up on it ever working again I thought this Western Digital program could perhaps fix it. I reformatted to Windows OS on a Gateway first, then reformatted to Mac OS on Macbook, total reformat time about 15 minutes. It works just fine now (please note that reformat erases all Hard Drive info). Taking photos with the Canon 7D I find I am using about 500GB a year due to the large files it creates, so the 120GB and 160GB will be portables for traveling and I will use two 500GB portables to be backups to the 3TB Drive (Iomega 500GB Mac eGo Red not shown in above image).

My whip-round birthday present arrived this morning, which was quite nice since it's my actual birthday today (at least, it is here in New Zealand). It's an external hard drive so I can backup my files. Hooray!
Years ago, before the cloud was called the cloud, I used remote Internet file storage sites to store my images. However, when the site went out of business, I lost all the images I had in storage. I vowed to never to use another external file storage site that was not under my direct control.
1. I now have enough SD and CompactFlash memory cards to save my original images for a minimum of one month before I have to reformat and reuse the cards.
2. I copy my original images from my memory cards to my computer’s internal solid state drive (SSD) and store them in a monthly folder. I leave the copies on the hard drive until I need the space and then I delete the oldest monthly folders first.
3. After the end of each month, I copy all of that month’s folder to a Seagate external hard disk drive (HDD).
4. I also use Western Digital external hard disk drives as backups to the Seagate.
5. At one time, CDs and DVDs were all I had for archival storage. When I discovered how unreliable they were, I transferred all my archival CD and DVD files to hard disk drives. I now only use CDs or DVDs for shipping files to different locations.
When traveling for an assignment, the minimum storage I take are a bunch of memory cards (compactflash and/or SD). The only time I travel with a computer is when I know I will be performing editing in the field because I have to give my clients edited images before I return home.
For vacations, I normally carry enough memory cards to give me a minimum of 36 images per day and an average of 100 images per day. This figure is based on the amount of images I have taken over decades of vacation travel.
I now use 4 Terabyte solid state drives to save my files.

I used to love this drive. It's got Firewire 800, 400 and USB connections. And it's rather cool looking. It's stackable too. I may get another.
And I did get another. And conveniently the first one died right after that. So as of this writing, I was down to one again. I've changed my mind. I won't be be getting another LaCie. I've read too many negative user reviews. LaCie drives seem to have an unusually high failure rate.
This just in..... both drives have now failed.
Two Seagates and a Western Digital, the Seagates are 500 GB and the WD is 1 TB, all are 2.5" and USB-powered

Top Right view of the hutch atop my desk. That yellow thing hanging down is a fly trap, which I got out of desperation. I was trying to rid this room of Biting Midges (it' didn't work). On top of the computer case is my LaCie d2 Hard Drive Extreme with Triple Interface (250 GB).
this is what my car looked like during my trip.
coupons.
bottles.
wires and wires and wires.
journal.
cds.
books.
ipod, of course.
and loads of crumbs.
time.
time is running out.
I want to see australia, new york, south africa.
I'm gonna learn guitar. I'm gonna write songs. I'm gonna date girls I've been keeping on the sidelines. I'm gonna start painting. I'm gonna pay off my credit card. I'm gonna fix my car. I'm gonna live.
I haven't been living.
I know you're thinking "what the fuck jeff, you're breathing, you're doing shit, you're alive"
there's a difference between living, and being alive.
we're all fucking alive.
but are we all living?
I think not.
I've been sititng here, saying things, talking my mouth away.
but acting?
going out there and doing it?
no.
it's time I do that.
and yeah, life's gonna throw me huge curves, but it's nothing I can't deal with.
I'm ready for you life, I've been trying to run as far as possible from you the past few years but what's the point in running? you know where I sleep.
I go to car.
As i was emptying my pockets onto the table, i realised it'd make a cool shot for my photo of the day. (and it's been ages since i shot crap scattered round the flat for my photo of the day like my wok, toolbox, or messy cables shots from around this time last year)
So i set up the light stand and velcro tied the strobe and brolly to the top (cos my clamps still haven't turned up cos of the FUCKING postal strikes, still - up the workers.) and took some test shots with the digi. after not too many attempts, i got this photo. so switched up to the film SLR, mounted the PW, and noted i had one exposure left. (and no spare 35mm film anywhere in the house)
I pressed the trigger, and..... nothing.
The Strobe had turned itself off.
What i learnt today:-
when shooting on film, (and you have none spare, and are down to 1 exposure) turn off the auto power off on the strobe.

I was organizing several picture files a few days ago when out of no where my Macbook stopped reading the content on my external hard drive. My heart dropped. All my work, projects, music, videos, and most important, the precious photos of my family and friends were on the line. Fortunately my PC computer at work was still able to read the content. I had been using a Windows formatted portable external hard drive on my Mac. Little did I know that the brand I had purchased is notorious for failing just after few years. I couldn't risk continuing to use the hard drive, so I did plenty of research and finally made the investment on a super reliable desktop external hard drive. I purchased what I believe to be the G of all drives (literally), the G-Technology G-Drive USB 4TB hard drive. The transfer rates are phenomenal. Where has this been all my life? I definitely think I have more memory than I'll ever need to use.
I've begun a Photo a Day project, you can view and read about it here.
So right after the Venice Beach Photowalk, I was having some graphics issues and I needed to take my computer into the Genius Bar to get it looked at. One thing that I forgot was to let Time Machine back up the photos that I imported that night before I put my computer in its box to go to the Apple Store. So, I've been without the rest of those Venice Beach Photowalk photos which was pretty annoying. I've gotten it back which is quite nice. : ) Now it feels and runs wonderfully. Nice and clean.
Day 8 / 365 - 8/1/10
A Timely Reminder
I figured I'd just do something sort of ad-like, sort of art-like since well, let's face it, I wanted the focus on the USB instead of the external drive. In any case, I figure I need to remind myself as much as anyone else to back up the photos! I haven't been unfortunate enough to have a HD of photos crash (yet) but my mom has. So I backup in at least 2 different places (currently working on having 3 good backups for just in case).
One of my external hard drives (I need more than one nowadays) the "G-Drive" is great and is loaded with loads and loads of my photos!
