Redbridge Underground Station, 13 July 2024. The London Passenger Transport Board’s New Works Programme of 1935 proposed extending the Central Line from its easternmost terminus at Liverpool Street through new tunnels to Stratford and thence (through further tunnels) over the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) branch from Leytonstone to Epping and Ongar, which the LPTB would take over.

In addition, the New Works Programme planned for a new line through tube tunnels from Leytonstone (which would then become a junction) via Redbridge to link with the LNER Ilford – Woodford (on the Leytonstone – Epping line) branch (the ‘Hainault Loop’) at Newbury Park, which the LPTB would also take over from Newbury Park. This envisaged a completely new station at Redbridge.

Although considerable works to the extension and stations had begun by 1939, the outbreak of WWII put completion on hold. During the war the tunnels at Redbridge were used as an air raid shelter before being occupied by Plessey to manufacture aircraft components. Post war, works restarted and the first stretch to Stratford was opened in December 1946 to be followed by the Leytonstone stretch via Leyton in May 1947 and the new Leytonstone – Redbridge - Newbury Park tube line in December 1947.

The new station at Redbridge was designed by the LPTB’s consultant architect Charles Holden pre-war on a very grand scale. However, post war economies meant the funds for the stations on the new section were reduced and meant the size of the stations was likewise reduced.

What was built at Redbridge was largely as Holden envisaged but without the associated shopping parade/bus station. Platform tiling was by Harold Stabler. Although the station was opened in December 1947, it was not finally completed until 1948. It is the shallowest deep level station on the tube network but this is misleading as the single island platform was constructed on the cut-an-cover system with tubes either side.

Originally the station was to be named West Ilford, then Red House, then Red Bridge before Redbridge was decided upon. It is a Grade II listed building.

Stakeholders in the e-waste management ecosystem have come together to discuss the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines and regulations for e-waste management in Rwanda. The hybrid workshop was held in Kigali and online and brought together representatives from public and private entities working to advance proper e-waste handling in Rwanda.

Extended producer responsibility (EPR) is an internationally accepted policy mechanism applied in e-waste management programmes under which producers are given a significant financial and/or physical responsibility for the disposal of post-consumer products.
