This is the same Flying Gurnard (misspelled in the filename) pictured earlier, but in motion with its wings extended. Blue color only shows in extended position. These used to be more common but are now rarer in shallower sites. Even our divemaster and guide for the dive (Sherman with Anchorage Whale Watch and Dive Center, Dominica) was pleased my wife spotted one.

Buckingham Country, Virginia. Shot with a Panasonic G2 camera and a Canon FD 500mm f8.0 mirror lens plus Canon 1.4x extender. Cropped to a square (full frame vertical height). The effective aperture is f11 with the extender attached, so I was shooting at ISO 400 and 1/250 second shutter speed.

Part of my extended project on trees, their forms and shapes, their beauty, their caducity and vulnerability. This one still looks sound but closer inspection reveals that it is ill - like almost every beech tree in the region where I live (due to air pollution).
