Ahoy me hearties. Although it's been almost a week since my last post, that feels like a pretty quick turnaround compared to recent times. Hope to get back to being more regular about this place shortly. Thanks for all your support and faves and comments and general loveliness.
To me this shot conjures the sense of crossing a not quite safe space. Head down, walk quickly without panic or drawing too much attention to oneself and then seek the solace and anonymity and proteciton of the shadows.

During a recent trip to the South Island of New Zealand, I was lucky to visit this special place on the Otago coast. The Moeraki Boulders are a group of very large spherical “stones” on Koekohe Beach. These boulders are actually concretions that have been exposed through shoreline erosion from coastal cliffs that back the beach. They originally formed in ancient sea floor sediments around 60 million years ago. Nature is very cool!
The only times we're truly ourselves, is when nobody is watching. With this image I wanted to show someone completely vulnerable, completely exposed - with the world's eyes on them. Showering in the morning, one of the only times of the day we're naked in more ways than one. No one to impress, no one to look at us except ourselves, sometimes the most critical eyes of them all.
A gust of wind comes, and before you know it, you're exposed. All your flaws are out for everyone to see. Everything's come to light. I wanted to capture a moment of interruption, confusion before the fact, and I'm really pleased with the turnout of this image!
This was taken on today's conceptual portraiture workshop! We literally left the bath under the watchful eye of a car-scrap man for about 15 minutes, and when we came back my bath had been stolen! Sad times. Nonetheless, this was worth the rain, the bath robbery and the needle-lodged-in-my-foot (right before the workshop began) which I'm heading to A&E for now. Overall, amazing day and welldone to Raimi, our model, for freezing his butt off in the cold all for this picture :)

Concrete street gutter a few blocks from my home

About the worst aggregate I have ever seen - the concrete is much stronger with angular aggregate.
Probably from stream gravel deposits from the S. Platte River about a mile to the west. Possibly 50 to 60 years old. Today most of our aggregates come from crusher plants, so it is much sharper and more uniform.

As nurses we work in an environment that will kill us. We understand that,. We use protection and procedures to reduce risk, and we come to work with the same mission as always. Usually to save or help some ungrateful son of a bitch who doesn't deserve our assistance. Some drug using wife beating ignorant pseudo criminal who views us and health care in general with suspicion and contempt. Some ignorant person to whom knowledge and education are evil and unnecessary. And to those who firmly think nurses are a sub-class of humanity and who would "report us to administration" and "have our jobs" because we don't offer them Demerol every hour for their little aches and pains. Never mind that many nurses including myself work more hours than we sleep, often in a great deal of unmedicated pain ourselves. But I digress.....
Tonight I discovered a fascinating fact. I was hoping to find the actual infection and death rate of health care workers among the statistics at the CDC. Instead I found this statement......
"Recent experiences with severe acute respiratory syndrome
and the US smallpox vaccination program have
demonstrated the vulnerability of healthcare workers to
occupationally acquired infectious diseases. However,
despite acknowledgment of risk, the occupational death
rate for healthcare workers is unknown. In contrast, the
death rate for other professions with occupational risk, such
as police officer or firefighter, has been well defined. With
available information from federal sources and calculating
the additional number of deaths from infection by using
data on prevalence and natural history, we estimate the
annual death rate for healthcare workers from occupational
events, including infection, is 17–57 per 1 million workers.
However, a much more accurate estimate of risk is
needed. Such information could inform future interventions,
as was seen with the introduction of safer needle products.
This information would also heighten public awareness of
this often minimized but essential aspect of patient care."

I began my search for statistics this evening because I began my own personal nightmare today. I was exposed to most of the dread diseases and killer viruses that our profession has to offer. Not because I did anything stupid, but because others did. The only stupid thing I did was report to work believing that the risks were low, that the system would support me if there was an exposure, and that my personal protective equipment was sufficient.

As I continue to expose the Toxic working and living conditions in Yosemite National Park, there are those scurrying to cover it up. Here is Yosemite; management and others involved in these illegal and unethical activities, will lie, spin and blame, to cover it up. Excuses will be flying left and right (no politics intended); many of these a 10-year-old will laugh at, but will be excepted. No one will be held accountable; some may move to a different department, some may actually be rewarded.
Really America, when did we come to a point that this is excepted!
