Exploration Days, Mapping
June 19-21 at MSU, nearly 2,500 youth and chaperones from every MI county come stay on campus for 4-H Exploration Days-- a pre-college program to meet new people and experience the life of a Spartan.

Exploration, on Redcliff Quay, is the product of three artists. It was commissioned in 1991 by Standard Life Assurance.
James Blunt made the Armillary Sphere. The rings symbolise the Horizon, Meridians, Arctic/Antarctic Circles, Equator and Tropics. The broad Ecliptic ring depicts the passage of the sun according to the seasons and the hemisphere.
Philippa Threlfall and Kennedy Collings made the terracotta panels of the obelisk. Here are representations of sea monsters, fishes and serpents from the unknown deep, some based on pictures found in ancient bestiaries.

During our local art exploration, we visited with local artist Larry-Michael Hackenberg at his home to see how his place shapes his work. We briefly explored historic architecture and public art in downtown Three Rivers. We also met with local artist Fred Grunert at the Carnegie Center for the Arts, where he discussed his own work and showed us the amazing galleries and other facilities of the Carnegie.
