Wave-particle duality

Is light a flow of particles or a wave phenomenon ? Light rays could be particle paths and they were regarded thus by Newton in his Optics. Light reflection in a mirror is then naturally interpreted with the hypothesis that particles of light, or photons, are like bouncing balls. Nevertheless Huygens argued that this phenomenon and others were better interpreted with the hypothesis that light rays are perpendicular lines to wave fronts.

Photography gives an evidence of the existence of particles of light, for traces left by light are always like impacts of particles.

But if light is made of particles how can we explain interference patterns such as those found by Young and Fresnel ? Interference is always interference between waves. It seems there can not be any interference with particles. An interference pattern is an experimental evidence that light is a wave phenomenon. It is confirmed by Maxwell's theory of electomagnetism, which defines light as an electromagnetic wave.

That light be made of particles is not contradicted by the existence of interference patterns. Here is what we can see if we look at how an interference pattern appears on a photographic plate (see photo - animated in original publication)

The wave phenomenon, interference, results from impacts of particles.

The superposition principle gives a very direct explanation of wave-particle duality. Any physical system is a particle or a system of particles, but these behave sometimes like waves because they can be in many places at the same time. The wave of a particle or of a system of particles determines its diffuse presence.

1. Quantum Entanglement

In 1935 and 1936, Schrödinger published a two-part article in the Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society in which he discussed and extended an argument by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen. The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) argument was, in many ways, the culmination of Einstein’s critique of the orthodox Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics and was designed to show that the theory is incomplete. (See the entries on the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen argument in quantum theory and the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics.)

In classical mechanics the state of a system is essentially a list of the system’s properties — more precisely, it is the specification of a set of parameters from which the list of properties can be reconstructed: the positions and momenta of all the particles comprising the system (or similar parameters in the case of fields).

The dynamics of the theory specifies how properties change in terms of a law of evolution for the state. In a letter to Max Born, Wolfgang Pauli characterized this mode of description of physical systems as a ‘detached observer’ idealization (see The Born-Einstein Letters, Born, 1992; p. 218).

On the Copenhagen interpretation, such a description is not possible for quantum systems. Instead, the quantum state of a system should be understood as a catalogue of what an observer has done to the system and what has been observed, and the import of the state then lies in the probabilities that can be inferred (in terms of the theory) for the outcomes of possible future observations on the system.

Einstein rejected this view and proposed a series of arguments to show that the quantum state is simply an incomplete characterization of a quantum system. The missing parameters are sometimes referred to as ‘hidden parameters’ or ‘hidden variables.’

It should not be supposed that Einstein’s notion of a complete theory included the requirement that the theory should be deterministic. Rather, he required certain conditions of separability and locality for composite systems consisting of separated component systems: each component system separately should be characterized by its own properties (its own ‘being-thus,’ as Einstein put it — ‘So-sein’ in German), and it should be impossible to alter the properties of a distant system instantaneously (or the probabilities of these properties) by acting on a local system.

In later analyses, notably in Bell’s argument for the nonlocality of quantum correlations, it became apparent that these conditions, suitably formulated as probability constraints, are equivalent to the requirement that statistical correlations between separated systems should be reducible to probability distributions over common causes (deterministic or stochastic) in the sense of Reichenbach. (See the entries on Bell’s theorem and Reichenbach’s common cause principle.)

A compact experiment aimed at enhancing cybersecurity for future space missions is operational in Europe’s Columbus module of the International Space Station, running in part on a Raspberry Pi Zero computer costing just a few euros.

“Our CryptIC experiment is testing technological solutions to make encryption-based secure communication feasible for even the smallest of space missions,” explains ESA software product assurance engineer Emmanuel Lesser. “This is commonplace on Earth, using for example symmetric encryption where both sides of the communication link share the same encryption key.

“In orbit the problem has been that space radiation effects can compromise the key within computer memory causing ‘bit-flips’. This disrupts the communication, as the key on ground and the one in space no longer match. Up to now this had been a problem that requires dedicated – and expensive – rad-hardened devices to overcome.”

Satellites in Earth orbit might be physically remote, but still potentially vulnerable to hacking. Up until recently most satellite signals went unencrypted, and this remains true for many of the smallest, cheapest mission types, such as miniature CubeSats

But as services delivered by satellites of all sizes form an increasing element of everyday life, interest in assured satellite cybersecurity is growing, and a focus of ESA’s new Technology Strategy for this November’s Space19+ Ministerial Council

.

CryptIC, or Cryptography ICE Cube, - the beige box towards the top of the image, has been a low-cost development, developed in-house by ESA’s Software Product Assurance section and flown on the ISS as part of the International Commercial Experiments service – ICE Cubes for short. ICE Cubes offer fast, simple and affordable access for research and technology experiments in microgravity using compact cubes. CryptIC measures just 10x10x10 cm.

“A major part of the experiment relies on a standard Raspberry Pi Zero computer,” adds Emmanuel. “This cheap hardware is more or less flying exactly as we bought it; the only difference is it has had to be covered with a plastic ‘conformal’ coating, to fulfil standard ISS safety requirements.”

The orbital experiment is operated simply via a laptop at ESA’s ESTEC

technical centre in the Netherlands, routed via the ICE Cubes operator, Space Applications Services in Brussels.

“We’re testing two related approaches to the encryption problem for non rad-hardened systems,” explains ESA Young Graduate Trainee Lukas Armborst. “The first is a method of re-exchanging the encryption key if it gets corrupted. This needs to be done in a secure and reliable way, to restore the secure link very quickly. This relies on a secondary fall-back base key, which is wired into the hardware so it cannot be compromised. However, this hardware solution can only be done for a limited number of keys, reducing flexibility.

“The second is an experimental hardware reconfiguration approach which can recover rapidly if the encryption key is compromised by radiation-triggered memory ‘bit flips’. A number of microprocessor cores are inside CryptIC as customisable, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), rather than fixed computer chips. These cores are redundant copies of the same functionality. Accordingly, if one core fails then another can step in, while the faulty core reloads its configuration, thereby repairing itself.”

In addition the payload carries a compact ‘floating gate’ dosimeter to measure radiation levels co-developed by CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, as part of a broader cooperation agreement

.

And as a guest payload, a number of computer flash memories are being evaluated for their orbital performance, a follow-on version of ESA’s ‘Chimera’ experiment which flew on last year’s GomX-4B CubeSat

.

The experiment had its ISS-mandated electromagnetic compatibility testing carried out in ESTEC’s EMC Laboratory

.

“CryptIC has now completed commissioning and is already returning radiation data, being shared with our CERN colleagues,” adds Emmanuel. “Our encryption testing is set to begin in a few weeks, once we’ve automated the operating process, and is expected to run continuously for at least a year.”

Seen in Huddersfield just as I was leaving is a really poor shot of some shat. This means, apparently (from Wiki) , Locals know it as "Shat", which appears to be an abbreviation of "Shatterers" which is what the locals were known as. Local labour was taken on during construction of the railway to break or 'shatter' rocks as well as work on the excavations. These unskilled labourers were referred to as Shatterers.[3] The Doctor Who actress Jodie Whittaker has explained the origins of the term and referred to herself as a "Shat lass".[4]

The weather forecaster explained that a hoar frost occurs when there's a frost on top of a frost that's already there (In any frozen form, frost, ice or snow). There does need to be a certain amount of dampness in the atmosphere for it to happen. So you may get icicles forming upwards or like the fine one on the photo.

The track "Maze" is taken from the sampler album "A Week or Two in the Real World" (2007). With the voices of Mari Boine Persen and Liu Sola. Listen & Enjoy it.

"Nature is my God, my guide and correction," BOINE explains. "Nature is the mirror of what is inside all of us. Without the connection to nature I would be lost."

Listening to her music is very much like listening to nature itself, something we'd be well advised to do more of.

BOINE was born in Karasjohka, a small town in the Arctic regions of Norway that are also part of what is known as Samiland, named after the indigenous people whose blood she shares. The Samis were colonised by Christians, and their culture slowly eroded until it was dismissed as worthless, so BOINE became acutely aware of notions of conformity early on. Her music has always been fiercely proud of her heritage, seeking to celebrate Sami culture while bringing it to a wider audience, fired initially by her anger at the contemporary treatment of their traditions.

But though she has not mellowed in her beliefs, convictions so strong that she refused to perform at the Lillehammer Winter Olympics in 1994 on the grounds that she did not want to be used as "an exotic decoration", she has always sought new ways to integrate her ideology into her work. Her blend of Sami folk traditions -- in particular the yoik -- with contemporary rock, jazz, electronica and other musical forms sourced from around the planet has made her a revered figure at home and abroad. From the release of her second album, Gula Gula (from 1989), on Peter Gabriel's Real World label, to 2007's collection of remixes by such acclaimed artists as Mental Overdrive and The Knife, her international status has been unquestionable.

Her songs are strongly rooted in her experience of being in a despised minority. Most of her songs are sung in Sami, speaks directly of 'discrimination and hate'. Her other songs are more positive, singing of the beauty and wildness of Sapmi (Lapland).

She sings in a traditional folk style, using the yodelling 'yoik' voice, with a range of accompanying instruments and percussion.

BOINE continue to push back boundaries, challenging listeners with bold musical initiatives and a rejection of expectations, all the time enchanting and invigorating her audience with her unearthly, haunting voice. And while the fact that she trades in a sound inspired by her cultural roots, sung largely in the language of her ancestors -- a language being slowly eroded by Western influences -- has led to her being classified as a 'world music' artist, her horizons are much greater and her appeal more far reaching than this might suggest. It is, as she herself suggests, "global music from the universal heart."

In a world that seems to spin increasingly fast, where shrinking borders are leading to the mass homogenisation of culture instead of enriching it, BOINE'S voice -- pure, worldly-wise and yet otherworldly -- is more vital than ever. Listening to her music is very much like listening to nature itself, something we'd be well advised to do more of.

Biography:

Mari Boine was born on November 8th 1956 in Gámehisnjárga by Karasjok. Educated teacher from the Regional College in Alta. Full-time musician since 1985. Her debut album Jaskatvuoda manna came in 1985, her breakthrough came in 1989 with Gula Gula .

Music can touch on strings you might not know you had. It can provide meaning, but it can also create moments which can't be defined. Moments which go to your core, that touch some sort of primal instinct, and that put you in a trancelike condition. Music can confuse you. But it can also make you feel happy, uplifted or enriched. And maybe even more whole.

Mari Boines music has this effect. You can't leave a meeting with Mari and her music untouched. That is, if you dare to let her get close. Her music is actually simple. It is in the meeting between the songs, her voice and the musicians in the band that it gains strength. And in the interaction with the listener, because you must meet Maris music with an open mind. If you dont give of yourself, you might not discover the wealth she has to offer.

Because Mari is exceptional. She is an artist who is difficult to categorize. Perhaps she's a Sámi artist, perhaps she's a practitioner of world music. Perhaps she makes music in the borderline between Sámi, other folk music, jazz and rock. Perhaps she's the sum of all this. Or perhaps she's just herself. A musician, singer and artist who's making her own mark. Who has gone down a road where she hasn't always seen the destination. And who is still travelling.

Special meetings at the UN, with many dignitaries in town and the Occupy Wall Street protests might account for the increased police presence. I still felt sympathy and kindness toward that dog I wanted to photograph more closely - reminded me of the German shepherds I had. Police officers being unfortunately made to do the dirty work of those truly responsible for this mess.

Maybe the Federal Reserve "conundrum" is getting more widely understood.

Can you explain the rain ?

Can you explain the light ?

Can you explain the color ?

Can you explain yourself ?

So like last time, I will do a explanation of what happens in the story. Also if you want to check out the previous story in this universe, (Batman: Reflection) the is an album that you can check out. Anyways, here we go.

1: Unhinged

So this photo shows what Batman has been doing after the events of Reflection, he goes on a murderous rampage and kills all of his enemies.

2: Memories

Again like the last one, this is just to clarify that batman is going insane and killing everybody. Also the grin adds to the madness that he is into.

3: Decision

So when Batman is done killing everyone, he moves onto the people that care about him most. Gordon is on the GCPD building and Batman swings down and aims his gun at him. He is torn between killing him or not. I really didn't show the result of this, but I came up with the conclusion that Gordon was shot and killed.

4: Alone

So after Batman kills Gordon, he reflects on his past and who he has killed and if killing is the right thing. But his madness still is growing rapidly and he snaps out and heads to Wayne Manor

5: Home

So I'd say that Batman has been away from Wayne Manor and the Batcave for about 4 months. So Alfred is shocked to see Bruce with a gun that is aimed at him, Batman walks down the stairs to the Batcave...

6: Confrontation

So after killing Alfred, Bruce brings the limp body into the batcave and sees Robin standing by the Jason memorial. Robin turns to see Batman, and they fight. After a while, Robin grabs the gun and points it at Bruce's head. Robin sees a man of craziness and madness in the suit; Joker. Robin is dealt with the same decision that Bruce was with Gordon; To kill him or not. Robin grip tightens...

7: Silence

Robin shoots Batman and crys over his dead body, losing a mentor and friend. In the reflection of the Jason memorial, Joker is seen gazing down onto Robin...his next victim.

So I hope you guys enjoyed this mini series and like this abstract story style. I think I'm not going to continue it because of how this ended, but time will tell.

Thanks guys for support,

“A.I. - About Apple’s Identity”

www.flickr.com/photos/stealaway/54271473379/in/dateposted...

### Will Apple Listen to Mark Zuckerberg’s Criticism?

I Don’t Think So—At Least Not for Someone Enchanted by the Apple Vision Pro.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently appeared on a well-known podcast, where he criticized Apple for failing to release an innovative product since the iPhone and for experiencing a decline in sales.

Appearing on a podcast originating from Apple and then proceeding to criticize the company might seem like a lighthearted joke, but I believe he was serious.

Why? Because he now wields a weapon—the AR glasses.

With the support of various institutions and a team of highly skilled professionals, he has likely achieved some notable milestones. Yet, as someone who has been a devoted Apple user since the PowerBook 540c, I still do not sense any real craftsmanship or identity in what he creates.

This sentiment extends to other IT giants that currently dominate the world—Meta, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Google.

Just by listing their names, readers of this text are likely already picturing their respective CEOs.

In the past, I wrote that Steve Jobs was not an artist.

What he excelled at was weaving together scattered ideas from across the world, expanding upon them, and linking them to the future.

The true creator was Jonathan Ive.

A minority of people may share this perspective with me.

However, when I see these IT moguls quickly shifting their corporate stances the moment the possibility of Trump returning to power emerges, I feel compelled to speak my mind.

The AR glasses, the cars—everything they create lacks a fundamental concept.

Call it ideology or, in lighter terms, identity.

It is true that Tim Cook and Apple’s current team have become more prone to letting slip details about upcoming products before their official release.

I have always loved music.

Artists shut themselves in a studio, cutting off the outside world, pouring their anger, hatred, joy, and sorrow into each note with intense focus.

It’s as if they are entrusting something to their music.

And when they finally release their album, they explain the emotions and thoughts behind its creation.

(Prince, whom I admire, rarely spoke about his work, so understanding his art required engaging with the final product itself.)

Until an album is complete and released, artists say nothing.

It was those artists who moved me to my core.

The faint glow of Apple’s innovation still remains within me.

Not even last year’s widely criticized "failure"—the Apple Vision Pro—could extinguish it.

In fact, it shines even brighter than the iPhone.

Because beyond its cutting-edge electronic components, I can sense a concept, an ideology.

Unfortunately, I will never feel the same from Meta’s AR glasses or Tesla’s cars.

I have written at length, but here is the key article:

**Tim Cook Donates Over $1.5 Million to Trump’s Inauguration Ceremony**

🔗 [Gigazine Article](gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...)

At first glance, this might make it seem like Tim Cook, like other tech CEOs, has sold his soul. But that is not the case.

While Cook personally donated to Trump, Apple itself did not follow the same path as other companies.

Apple refused to bow to Trump.

If asked what Apple’s ideology truly is, I would answer this:

**Apple is a group of individuals who believe in themselves.**

Steve Jobs, watching from heaven, is probably chuckling at this overly serious text I wrote.

A company that does not pander to Trump—

That is Apple. :)

8mm film of our honeymoon resurrected after decades.

youtu.be/zH-dG7bMeL4?si=yLF5_f1m-LhAVdPp

We found the 8mm film of our honeymoon for the first time in decades, and burned it onto a DVD.

On June 6, 1993, we got married, and headed straight to Nassau, Bahamas, via New York.

Our destination was the pink sand beach where the late Princess Diana went on her honeymoon.

If you're heading to the Bahamas, this might be a good reference.

The hotel we stayed at was the Ramada Hotel, which no longer exists.

My wife is showing us the hotel room.

But now you can see the beautiful scenery in real time.

When I played the DVD that arrived, it showed footage of our arrival in the Bahamas.

Please take a look if you'd like.

This time, we asked Fujifilm to make the DVD.

I'll post the link below.

### **Synopsis**

Kei Kitami, a student preparing for university entrance exams, meets Kaori Kamimura, an event companion six years his senior, through social media.

Kaori has come to Tokyo with a dream—to befriend famous artists.

To achieve this, she needs the influence of Ryo Osawa, a well-known radio producer.

During a live radio broadcast, Osawa speaks directly to Kaori:

*"I have a wife and child. But still, I want to see you."*

Meanwhile, Rika Sanjo, Kei’s classmate who secretly harbors feelings for him, is closely watching Kaori’s every move...

Main story

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

www.flickr.com/photos/stealaway/54271473379/in/dateposted...

gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...

youtu.be/zH-dG7bMeL4?si=yLF5_f1m-LhAVdPp

Photography friends on a Detroit Downtown Photo shoot.

I am not at all sure whether the small goose here is one of the four subspecies of Cackling Geese or if it is just a Lesser Canada Goose. If it is the former, it's likely to be "Branta hutchinsii hutchinsii – Richardson’s (or Hutchins’s) Cackling Goose – which reportedly intergrades with Branta canadensis parvipes throughout range in NWT and Nunavut, but this is uncertain. It is characterized by a small and rather light, pale breast....Richardson’s Cackling Goose (B. h. hutchinsii) nests in Arctic Canada and winters mainly in Texas and Mexico."

These facts would help explain how this little guy passes through Kelowna. I should note, however, that the little one's bill is a bit longer than those of Cacklers I have seen at The Coast, which are apparently a different subspecies from Richardson's....

I don't really like the movie Alice in Wonderland, (I think it has been subverted by hippies and I hate hippies), but I really like a lot of the characters from the movie. I think the movie's fatal flaw is that it's too dependent upon sensory 'captivation' and uses that as a crutch for a weak story (which may explain why the hippies like it, so they can smoke their reefer cigarettes and stare at the cool color swirls!).

The White Rabbit, Mad Hatter, Alice, Cheshire Cat, Tweedles, and Queen of Hearts are all great characters. Too bad there isn't a better storytelling vehicle to really allow these characters to shine. Then the movie would be a true classic.

The telescoping conveyor works as a system of pulleys.

Each boom section has a pulley at the front and the back, so as the front is brought further out, the rear is brought closer by the same amount.

This means that no matter how far the boom is extended, the chain always remains the same length.

This also allows it to be extended or retracted while the chain is being driven by the motor.

I can't fully explain this--it looks like a giant mat of bacteria and perhaps fungus. Because it is less than a mile downstream of the superfund site to remediate the gigantic spill of toxic mine waste from the Gold King Mine on August 5, 5015, I suspect that this is one of the many consequences of that flood. The spill went into Cement Creek, shown here, which flows into the Animas River near Silverton, Colorado. Further downstream, the Animas has a confluence with the San Juan River, which flows into Lake Powell. The yellow-orange mixture gushing from the mine flowed from Colorado into New Mexico, then through the Navajo Nation.

The flowing water is Cement Creek, and this bacterial/fungal mat leaks water into it--there is no barrier. I have worked waist deep in some fetid cow ponds, but I did not have the nerve to put a boot into this abomination.

I think I may have gone overboard with the processing. Do you feel that it's too much?

"..in his theory that man descended from the apes of the forest, but surely woman rose from the frothy sea, as resplendent as Aphrodite on her scalloped chariot.”

(Margo Datz - A Survival Guide for Landlocked Mermaids)

It's a bit of a miracle that the two ever met, much less came to depend on one another - man and woman.. Coming from such different places. But it would help explain some of the differences between the sexes. Perhaps mean don't really come from Mars, and women don't come from Venus.. It's just that they spring from different ancestry..

One thing they are likely to agree on, is that a daybed like this one, adrift on the shore should bear a woman in a flowing, diaphanous gown, fluttering in the ocean breeze that tugs at her tresses and at her soul..

Ever wonder about the orange triangle on the subway walls? It's a marker for how far the rear guard should keep watching the platform with his head out the window as the train exits the station

.. hands close to the heart, looking for words..

"This work is one of the upa-agamas and explains the supreme wisdom to be attained by mature souls and their mode of life, expounded by the Supreme Lord Siva to Devi Parvati.

It is the essence of all Agama Sastras on matters of spiritual knowledge. This is verily the boat which can rescue the mortals struggling hard, sinking and rising, in the sorrowful ocean of samsara of endless cycles of births and deaths and take them by the direct path to the shore of liberation. Let all earnest seekers after Truth, instead of groping in the dark, bewildered, and losing their way, adopt the help of this straight path and reach the supreme state to bliss and peace.

Meditate in the Heart upon Lord Ganesa -- the silent, non-dual, universal witness -- who is the nectar of divine bliss and is full of grace, shining as the bountiful flowering of aspirants following the path of spiritual wisdom revealed in Devikalottara, which was expounded by Lord Ishwara into the ears of Goddess Ishwari."

[Devikalottara]

Explain that name please. Did Transdev really just made one up for others to spot it?

The Amazing Perito Moreno Glacier.

WOW WOW WOW WOW is a line I remember saying upon arriving at this amazing glacier. The Blue colour of it's ice is breathtaking. Our Guide explained that we were quite lucky to have cloud because the blue loses some of it's magnificent colour in bright sunshine. This was actually the first time on this trip that the word "cloud cover" sounded good. As the day went on the sun disappeared even more behind the clouds making the glacier's striking blue stand out even more.

The Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia is the only Glacier in the world that grows continually, up to 450 metres a year.

The Perito Moreno Glacier can be found in the Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina. The park was founded in 1945 and consists of 13 Glaciers, an area which is 4,500 km. In 1981 both the glaciers and the national park were named to the UNESCO list of World Natural Heritage Sites.

The Perito Moreno Glacier, pictured above, was named after it's discoverer. He was an Argentinean Geographer and Anthropologist named Pascasio Perito Moreno.

The Patagonian Ice Field covers the greater part of the Los Glaciares National Park and is one of the biggest in the world, second only to the Antarctic Ice Cap. The Patagonian Ice Field consists of a total area of 4,459km, a length of 350km and a width of 50 km at it's widest point. It originates in the north of the national park on the slopes of the Fitzroy Massif at a height of only 1,500 metres. The 3 main tributaries of the main glaciers, the Perito-Moreno, Uppsala and Viedma (which we also visited) all end at approximately 1,300 metres above sea level. The melted water has formed enormous lakes which have an amazing turquoise colour, from which the edges of the glacier rise like giant icebergs.

The Icy Giant rises as much as 60 metres above the water's surface but the majority of the glacier lies below the water's surface at a depth of 130 metres. We took a boat ride along the glacier's front and just could not describe in words how enormous and impressive this beauty of nature truly is. Large pieces of fractured ice frequently breaks off the edge of the glacier. However, Perito Moreno is the only glacier in the entire world which continues to advance rather than retreat.

Zoos exist, in part, to educate the public about animal conservation. Here, Jess explains target training to a guest, while Bane stands by, hoping for more food!

You might notice that Jess also has a blue target. That's for Mutant, the female ostrich. Jess noted that ostriches can distinguish those two colors.

This little girl explains the Nightwatch to her disbelieving companion.

I was very fortunate to happen upon the Peucetia viridans, the green lynx spider moulting one evening this summer. Here's a wonderful write up The Silk Road did on the photos explaining what goes on.

The Silk Road (by Tone Killick)

The actual process of shedding an exoskeleton - called ecdysis - is very tricky for spiders. First they grow the new exoskeleton inside of the old one. The new exoskeleton is chemically the same stuff as the old one, but it is not hardened yet and indeed is wrinkled like having a large t-shirt on underneath a snug sweater. With the new exoskeleton complete, the spider dissolves the living tissue between the old and new skeletons, leaving only nerve connections to the sensory organs - touch-sensitive hairs, eyes, and chemical sensory organs (taste and smell) located on the outside of the body. One day, the spider will hang from a thread on the it's web or under a leaf, disconnect those sensory organs, and pop the top on its cephalothorax (the body part with all the legs). The body usually slides out easily, but then, the legs must follow. It is not unusual for spiders, especially large females, to get stuck. The chemical changes involved in hardening off the new exoskeleton start as the old skin is shed. Spiders not infrequently die as their long legs harden and stick before they can be completely withdrawn from the old exoskeleton. To preserve flexibility of the joints, recently-moulted spiders engage in stretching and flexing their legs in very standard sequences that are marvellous to watch.

Juneteenth was just recently signed into a national holiday, but it has been around a while. It commemorates when Union Army General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, TX on June 19, 1865 and brought enforcement of the Proclamation that had been signed 3 years prior, but was being ignored.

first, this is the older/bored dog version of all the other fun pics i've seen recently of dogs wrapped in chirstmas lights.

second - and i am totally serious about this - he loved being wrapped in the lights because they were warm.

finally, this was the first photo shoot with my new camera, so he really had no choice. and i think i'm going to like this camera just fine.

The We are Here challenge on July 21 2018 was: Conspiracy Theory

Our tour guide cautioned us not to ask any questions about spaceships and aliens, on pains of being expelled from the tour. In spite of which, there were about half a dozen questions along those lines. So, in the name of decorum, this photo leaves the conspiracy theorizing up to the viewer.

By the way, if you go to Stonehenge, I highly highly highly recommend this Special Access tour by Pat Shelley, which gives you access to the central area of the monument after the crowds have gone. [edit] - it is special not only in the ability to see the stone circles up close, which is the climax of the evening tour. Before that, Pat and his team give you a wonderful walking tour of the Stonehenge ceremonial campus - an archaeological overview, Woodhenge, Durrington Walls, the burial mounds, the Cursus, and a walk up the Avenue to behold Stonehenge as the ancients might have done.
