a great new week to all of you!

The terraces were dug following the natural curves of the landscape. The thickness of the walls stores heat during the day and diffuses it at night. Thanks to this method it has been possible to obtain a different microclimate as one goes down and gets closer to the centre. An average temperature difference of 5°C was observed, whereas the difference is only 0.5°C over comparable height differences at the same location. Due to its sheltered position, each of the terraces represents approximately one thousand metres of altitude under normal growing conditions.

This isn't a planned photo. In fact I surprised Fynn when he played with the tinsel which was waiting on the living room table for my sister to come by and choose one for her tree. I could only quickly grab the camera and take this photo before Fynn remembered (a) that playing with the tinsel isn't allowed and (b) that he doesn't like the camera right now.

Mother Nature can be hard to explain, she is a figure who symbolizes our earth and the beauty of nature. Many see her as our supreme mother, who has created the wonders and gifts of nature that we are so lucky to live among.

"Mother Nature is always speaking. She speaks in a language understood within the peaceful mind of the sincere observer."

It was a wonderful experience being able to get so close to this Buzzard perched majestically in the top of a tree. My thanks to Tim Melling for explaining that it is a young bird hatched this year as evident from the streaks on its upper breast (adults have horizontal bars) and the lack of a broader dark terminal band on the tail tip; juveniles have all the tail bars narrow and of equal width.

play it again!

hard to explain...

American Coot - Foulque d'Amérique

I just realized that duck hunting is allowed til the end of January in most of the places I visited in CA. That explains probably why they are so skittish in March.

I am no fan of garden ornaments, but when the owner of this house invited me in to have a look at their latest addition, I could hardly refuse.

I was also glad I did. As she explained that it had been made from washed up driftwood found on the beaches. It makes it a far superior garden ornament.

Better viewed large and thank you for yuur favourites.

Another eagle was approaching rapidly off frame towards this eagle with its meal pulled from the river.

I can't quite explain why the background looks B&W. It was very dull at the time and the light certainly wasn't good but I find the effect quite interesting. The bushes behind the perch were certainly dark. Other than a crop this image is straight out of the camera.

Thank you to all who fave or comment on my photos it is much appreciated.

A very vocal bald eagle with its meal.

Hold me, just hold me please don't ask me where I come from

Oh what I cry these tears

Just hold me, hold me please

Let me rest in the silence of your embrace

Give me a moment and dont make me explain

Cus all I need, and all I ask for

56091 makes its presence known hammering through frosty Daresbury with 4Z19 0800 Ravenhead Sidings to Chaddesden Yard empty box wagons. Could have done with it running half an hour later but beggars can't be choosers...!

This is the first time a DCR Class 56 has worked on this circuit and appeared because there was no Class 60 available; previously a DB Class 60 was hired in as and when required. The maintenance of the Class 60's has recently been transferred from Toton to Leicester (perhaps at the end of the warranty period) so this could explain the substitution.

Originally the path to return the empty wagons to Chaddesden Sidings was in the system for Tuesday but happily the 56 was required elsewhere so the train ran on Monday to coincide (for once) with a nice forecast.

LISTEN UP! It has been almost 80 degrees all week, then it snowed last night for a few hours. Let me explain, snow here is like every 15 years and then it is just flurries - nothing really sticks. And while it isn't a LOT of snow, for here its a TON of snow. It's already melted and it never stuck to the road or driveways, etc. But this is the view from my front porch of my neighbor's house. While it was pretty, once every 20 years is quite enough of this nonsense. I had to go find a coat and brush the dust off of it to go outside. It should be 55 today then back in the 70's this weekend.

As I already explained, I only had my zoom lens on my camera when I visited Nancy. It was therefore impossible for me most often, to my great regret, to take overall views of the monuments I saw.

Here, I fortunately found a reflective half sphere placed on the sidewalk. You could admire a reflection of the cathedral there. By taking this sphere from afar, I was able to restore with my zoom lens an original overall view of this building.

I cannot. A double-exposure, the first thing one would jump to, is out. How could the second exposure on the same frame just selectively put in the three rectangular images without all the surrounding details? Very weird. I cannot possibly explain it but maybe one of you can. This was not taken through a window. I was standing out on our balcony in the open air.

Meifoor Bruges - with thanks to Jan for explaining me how to play with shutter speed!

Poinsettia, also known by Easter morning names (in Portugal), beak-to-parrot-tail macaw and parrot (in Brazil), cardinal flower-of-natal or star-of-home is a plant native of Mexico, where it is spontaneous. Its scientific name is Euphorbia pulcherrima, meaning "the most beautiful (pulcherrima) of euphorbias."

It is a plant widely used for decorative purposes, especially at Christmas time due to its leaves like red petals. As it is a short-day plant, flowers exactly the winter solstice coincides with Christmas (in the northern hemisphere - which would explain why this plant is not so identified with Christmas in Brazil).

Effectively, what many people consider to be modified flowers are only bracts surrounding pseudo-umbel where the flowers are small, enveloped by a green tissue layer and a yellow gland born only on one side of the flower.

As I explained in the description to my "Suburban Dreams" slideshow, each of these photographs are related to the other. www.flickr.com/photos/luminosity7/52638166831/in/datepost...

They are not random shots, but each tells us one more thing about the nature of a typical modern working class suburb. I always work in series, but this collection was most definitely planned. The twilight setting and light is all part of the creation of a mood. Is it possible to find things of beauty in the midst of the mundane and ordinary? That's more about philosophy than photography. And why I am such an odd fit for Flickr.
