On March 14th the Harzer Schmalspurbahn hosted the last public runs of their mallet locomotive 99 5906. On this day the HSB put the 5906 in regular service on the Selketalbahn where the locomotive served much of it career. After more than 100 years of service the locomotive was retired the next day due to the expiration of its boiler certificate. For the moment there are no plan to return it to service due to lack of workshop capacity and the high cost of keeping the aging locomotive operational. I had never photographed the HSB mallets before so decided it could well be now or never. I had mixed luck during the day and was cloud skunked on the last trip up the hill out of Gernrode. For the last trip however all came together. Here the 5906 heads towards Gernrode for the last time through the blooming rapeseed fields just north of Bad Suderode.

The San Michele Cemetery has been Venice’s principal cemetery since its creation in 1807. The cemetery is located on the island of Isola di San Michele between Venice and Murano.

In addition to the main consecrated Catholic burial ground, there are separate Protestant and Eastern Orthodox sections catering to non-Catholics. The Jewish cemetery of Venice is located on the island of Lido. Both the cemetery and the island are named after the church of San Michele in Isola built in the 15th century on the island, dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel.

Established in 1807, San Michele has been under continuous use as the main burial ground of Venice for over 200 years. Space is tight, and therefore cemetery management puts graves up for lease for 12 years, recycling communal plots following lease expiration by removing skeletal remains to be transferred to an ossuary.

Another photo from my archives before Covid when so much was taken for granted. The annual Festival of Sails which is the highlight of Labor Day weekend in the San Diego harbor is usually attended by approximately 125,000 people over the three-day event. I'm hoping the pandemic will have run its course after over two years and the festival will again resume this year.

In researching The Pilgrim, I was shocked to discover that in 2020 while it was docked in Dana Point it met its demise. "One of the most iconic visuals at Dana Point Harbor is no more, as Pilgrim, the resident tall ship at the Ocean Institute dock, keeled over in her slip overnight, it was announced on March 29. Pilgrim’s useful life was rendered over as a result."

Pilgrim, which measured 98 feet in length and had a beam of 24.6 feet, arrived in Dana Point as a replica in 1981.

I guess we all have an expiration date, even a Tall Ship.

I gathered more little weeds than one page could handle so here they are, the second batch.

we went out to breakfast this morning and then to the PO to mail off the defunct Diana Instant.

I had lunch with my daughter and then home again.

so it was a quiet day..

no weeding

however, the bear showed up night before last at 11:05 pm, close to the time Boo goes out for her second pee.

we survived.

last night he showed up again at 9:45 pm, even closer yet to Boo's time out front. I warned Leon, and when I went out later I tippy toed out with the flashlight and rushed her in.

the culmination to a couple of bad days would be being eaten by the bear.

He not busy being born is busy dying.-- Bob Dylan

A page from Lake's book:

There are so many adages written about life, death, and the importance of our time on this earth.

One thing we all know for certainty is that we are born with a physical expiration date.

However, I'm one who believes that the divine energy that sustains our souls never dies. It continues to ascend and travel into other dimensions.

On the sixth of August, 2024, a very good friend of mine passed away. He was young, full of life, and he died prematurely and unexpectedly. It took a few days for this news to knock on my door. I used to feel extreme sadness at the passing of a loved one. And while it still weighs heavily on my heart, my belief in going to a better world when we die is unshakable, and that gives me strength. Did I cry for the loss of my good friend? Yes. Did I raise a glass and wish him glorious travels to his next dimension? Heck yes!

David, thank you for all our conversations about life, sports, relationships and the world. You were a true gentleman, a caring man. Your jovial personality and your shining smile were like magnets. You were one heck of a sportsman. I will miss seeing you play hockey.

One last goal for you, my friend.

I will see you again.

Peaceful travels.

R.I.P.

If you want to make good resolutions (don't forget: it will soon be that time again) or adopt a new habit, it is helpful to tell others about it in order to increase your commitment to yourself. And what applies to a good resolution or a new habit may not be a bad idea for a project that requires a little more endurance and where difficulties and delays are inevitable.

Well then: Secretary grew up in Germany. But next year it will be a quarter of a century since his then young family moved to Switzerland. And this year he has begun preparations for a completely crazy project that will keep him busy for the next year and at least a good part of the year after that: He wants to visit the smallest settlement in each of the 26 Swiss cantons and take photographs there. And to increase the level of craziness even further, he will carry out the project on film and expose exactly one roll of film in each of the places he visits. 36 pictures, no more and no less.

Currently, Secretary is in the process of researching the locations in question (which is very easy for some cantons, but not as trivial as one might think for others) and has obtained 30 identical color negative films, as not all film material is still available. 26 rolls of film are needed for the shootings, and four serve as reserves. After some consideration and consultation, he opted for a classic: Kodak ColorPlus 200.

Secretary does not yet know what he will ultimately do with the pictures. Ideally, some of them will make it into a coffee table book.

Incidentally, the purchase of the film rolls also sets a theoretical end date for the photographic work. Their expiration date is August 2027...

I haven't done an abstract shot for quite a long time, and yes, this was completely by accident. Thanks to the inspiration of other macro photographers, I was scrutinising the moss growing on the trees locally, happened upon this unusual plant growth from a pocket of moss and so, on the Nikkor 55-200mm I affixed the DCR250 and thanks to the awkward focus points, I had to switch to manual, rocking on my ankles I got this shot, in PP I noticed it looked so Alien and yet ghostly at the time.

Thus it got me thinking, albeit all things are energetic wave form information, be in one realm of any given dimension, 3D, 4D, or 5D, spirits are absolute, so thus, isn't it unusual how we categorise Aliens and Ghosts into secular partitions? An Alien can surely have a spirit thus upon expiration of "physical" life, can go on energetically to the next realm as a Spirit. Concluding that Homosapiens, Aliens and Ghosts are in fact one and the same thing, acutely a conscious multiplicity of differing, interchangeable and energetic Interdimensional, waveform information constructs of infinite awareness.

Psst: Guess what? You never actually die.

I hope everyone is well and so as always, thank you! :)

It's either not done enough...or way past expiration... jury is out.

Another test with an expired film somebody gave me. This time an Agfa XRG 100, performing pretty well 27 years after its expiration date. I overexposed it two stops and did not have to do a lot of post production work in Lightroom. Amazing!

Winter is almost over now

I spent most of the year

Dreading you

You are a curse that always

Lasts about 2 to 3 months

Though, each year I'm alive

Your visits grow shorter

You remind me of death

Everything will leave us in time

All living entities have an Expiration

Not all dates are readable or Predictable

But winter comes and takes so much away from us.

It is hard to even appreciate Autumn

When you think about

All of the beauty dying.

All of the colors drying out.

And the Withering…

The challenge to find beauty

In less expected places.

The air, although it seems, crisp at first, becomes

Far more chilling, and intolerable.

The greater the years I am alive,

The more brutal it feels.

It gets to feeling like

I have no skin at all.

But now, I realize

Spring is actually coming.

Spring is a hopeful time yet

Will I ironically miss the dread?

I feel remorse for the fact that

I have no excuse to stay

Inside, isolated, and depressed.

This feels much more like my

Genuine human state.

I cannot resist the world in Spring when life is reborn

I literally have no reasons left

To not go outside.

The experience of the world is

Waiting for me.

Am I ready?

I was wondering - how long does fixer last? I know how to test fix that's been diluted to see if it's been exhausted. But several unopened bottles of Ilford Rapid Fix have come into my household recently, without expiration dates (also true of the most recent bottle of this chem that I bought). Is there a way to know whether it's still good, without risking a roll of photos? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

This is Big Stump Beach in Oregon, home to a remarkable relic of nature—the massive stump of a coastal redwood tree, estimated to be over 1,200 years old. This stump marks the northernmost point where a coastal redwood has ever been observed. Its presence is a testament to resilience and decay, a poignant symbol of the cycles of life.

This image was captured on Orwo 125 film, a medium long past its expiration date by over two decades. The use of expired film underscores the themes of impermanence and transformation, mirroring the ephemeral nature of the tree itself. Life and creation, emerging from the ocean millions of years ago, now return to the elements.

In the distance, a solitary figure stands fishing against the vast expanse of the ocean, bringing a quiet, meditative harmony to the scene. The image connects the viewer to the cycle of life and the profound interdependence of all things.

Choosing monochrome was essential for this photograph. The absence of color distills the moment to its essence, emphasizing texture, contrast, and emotion. It invites reflection on the passage of time and the beauty found in decay.

This photograph is a narrative of life, death, and the enduring spirit of nature.
