“We are proud to be bringing our expertise to such an important project, which can make a real difference in the fight against HIV, TB and malaria”

This photo shows the day I stood up at the Global Fund’s Sixth Replenishment Conference and announced the support of the Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF) for the Breaking Down Barriers initiative. It was a key moment that marked the beginning of a stellar collaboration.

The aim of the Breaking Down Barriers project is to strengthen reporting skills among journalists in Eastern and Southern Africa. By doing this, we can help ensure free flow of accurate information to those who need it most and those who can effect change. We are proud to be bringing our expertise to such an important project, which can make a real difference in the fight against HIV, TB and malaria.

The Global Fund and the TRF share a common approach and a common goal. We both believe in fostering global partnerships to harness expertise and achieve maximum impact. We both have a vision of advancing human rights to shape a prosperous world where no one is left behind.

There is still a long way to go to realize this vision. Access to lifesaving services and medicines is blocked for half the world’s population, often because of stigma, ignorance or prejudice. The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated these inequalities.

With the help of the TRF’s unique combination of media and legal interventions, some of these insurmountable roadblocks can be torn down. Fair and balanced news coverage is critical to informing public opinion, while the law is essential in protecting human rights. Combined, they are key to unlocking systemic change.

This is a short and long report, I made over three years (2013, 2014 and 2015) on the characteristic votive-religious manifestation held in the Sicilian town of Calatabiano (Catania), which is known as the "Descent of St. Philip "in honor of its patron saint and protector St. Philip Syriac. This year the celebrations have had a particular resonance because it fell on the anniversary of the 250th anniversary of the ancient rite (1765-2015), with summer festivities that are coming in fulfillment. Every year, on the Saturday eve of the third Sunday of May the church of SS. Crucified at the Castle at 18,30 o'clock starts a spectacular, not without its dangers, descent of heavy float (13 quintals) bearing the reliquary bust, supported by devotees along a steep - slippery - steep path - with a step supported (each year is commented on the greater or lesser speed of gait), which includes a dangerous curve (nicknamed by the popular imagination "death curve") in which the float must be able to make a sharp turn at the end of the route steep showing all the expertise of the carriers still in the lead with the float-boss, thus reaching the outskirts of the village in the place called "the First Cross" here where the race ends with a stop during the which the saint is gold suit, then the float is brought to the Mother Church of Calatabiano. The following Sunday, the so-called "eighth" (similar to the feast of St. Philip of Agira Limina - Messina) back to life the ritual, with porters, at 19.00 o'clock starting from the Mother Church to climb up over the Castle Mountain (so named for the presence of a well-preserved Norman medieval castle), thus restoring the heavy fercolo in the Church of SS. Crucifix, located directly below the castle. The "descent" and "ascent" are carried at a brisk pace (not a run, as it is sometimes called) to want to echo the vehemence of the Saint Exorcist, in expelling demons ( Philip was born in Syria in 40 AD, during the Roman domination, and was educated from childhood to the new Christian religious principles).

The many devotees crowding on the hill above the steep path, many of them are adorned with ribbons of woven of the three colors red-yellow-green (every year the colors of the shirts of the carriers change, bringing each time one of three colors), such ribbons or "measures" are the beard of the saint, in fact, legend has it that the young Philip went down to the underworld to tie the devil with his beard, that would explain why the saint is depicted in black, in fact he burned himself during " descent "and the fight against the Forces of Evil.

Meanwhile the Athens News Agency has a report in my regular digest of stories from Greece [No.2975, 6 Oct 2007]:

[33] Agriculture ministry promises tough action against crooked forestry official

Deputy Agriculture Minister Costas Kiltidis on Thursday pledged that the ministry will closely monitor the case of senior forestry service official Panagiotis Kanellopoulos - who currently faces a charge of bribery - and stressed that the ministry would not allow 'even a whisper' of suspicion regarding the existence of corrupt transactions in the forestry department. 'What must at last prevail is the morality of responsibility' Kiltidis said, adding that the response of the authorities would be 'ruthless in every direction'.

He was answering a question raised by main opposition PASOK MP Theodoros Pangalos in Parliament, who pointed out that Kanellopoulos had already been granted two postponements in the hearing of the case against him.

According to Pangalos, the whole Markopoulos area where Kanellopoulos served as head of the local forestry service was 'abuzz' with his activities. 'He operated in two ways: either by removing the designation of land as forested or public land and acknowledging it as private land, in return for bribes, or by blackmailing and raising issues that land was forested that he finally gave freely to be converted into building lots in order to earn money,' Pangalos claimed.

The MP further noted that the accused and a team that quite likely assisted him were rumoured to have earned huge sums in this manner, while pointing out that Kanellopoulos had a highly luxurious residence and lived in a 'scandalous' manner.

Pangalos also commented on the fact that the same forestry official had let it be known that he was extremely highly connected and could expect support, and that his brother was a trade unionist that was very well known at the agriculture ministry.

'I am not suggesting that this constitutes some sort of responsibility but it is undoubtedly an interesting dimension that must be treated carefully. It would be better if postponements of his trial did not continue,' the MP added.

Kiltidis noted that the forestry official was being prosecuted by justice and through internal disciplinary proceedings and that the Public Administration Inspectors and Comptrollers Corps had been called in to investigate any cases that Kanellopoulos had handled.

Thanking Pangalos for his question, he said that the entire government and leadership of the ministry were determined to uphold the law, according to the prime minister's orders.

Kanellopoulos was arrested on September 24 after he accepted a bribe of 5,000 euros in pre-marked notes from a woman to give a favourable opinion in a property case concerning her husband.

I am quoting this material because this is not just a Greek problem. The market for Greek land is global. I, with my love for Greece, and our property ownership in Corfu am among the millions of those who consume the dream of 'a place in the sun'. It seemed to me, being only partially frivolous, that this juxtaposition of an academic expert clearly committed to implementing rational and progressive land use policies in Greece with a corrupt forestry official accused of taking bribes from those who want to build on land intended for trees, echoes the familiar tension that has run through modern Greek history since the War of Independence, between klephts and constitutionalists. My apologies if this is an offensive analogy but it was the one that occurred to me. How i would like to see a conversation between forestry official Panagiotis Kanellopoulos (not to be mistaken for the Greek statesman of the same name) and academic Professor Helen Briasouli. What could they say to one another? It is an impossible conversation - and has been for a long time.

The L’Oréal Paris Dermo-Expertise series holds a large range of Youth Code products, all of which are designed to make your skin look smooth, appear more radiant, and makes your features look more rested. Designed for those around the ages of 35-40 years old, the Youth Code range has anti-wrinkle technology and contains collagen to even out the appearance of wrinkles. I’ve been trying the Night Recovery Cream after receiving a whole bunch of samples for it – although not really sure why because I’m in my early 20s! However, I’ve decided to try it as a form of night-time moisturising and I’ve really impressed with it. I understand that I’m not in the recommended age range, but here are my reasons why I liked it:

The cream feels very smooth. It’s a clear white colour which can be gently applied to the skin. It spreads really well and it feels really nice on the skin, but not like normal creams. It has a slight texture to it that feels almost elastic, except it doesn’t retract when applying to the skin. It’s hard to explain, but it does have a really nice texture that rubs in well and feels really good when you cover the skin with the cream.

The other thing is that the cream smells really nice. It’s lightly fragranced with a pleasant and elegant smell which isn’t overwhelming or irritating on my skin. Nor is the cream itself – it didn’t clog up my pores or cause spots, but left me with skin which felt and looked extremely smooth and clear, and also radiant and well rested. I was really pleased with the out come, and I was impressed how well the cream spread over my face.

One thing I would have liked to be different is that the instructions clearly state to avoid the eye area and its surroundings. I have bags under my eyes (too much to do and too little time!) which I would love to have annihilated, but I can’t really do with this cream. As such I have had to find an alternative eye moisturising solution. The rest of my face feels really lovely though, and in the morning I’m left with fresh looking and feeling skin which looks nicer than any other cream I’ve tried. Although I can’t comment on the anti-wrinkle capabilities, I’m still very pleased with the outcome, which isn’t bad for around £16 a pot.
