Mixanteña de Santa Cecilia of Mexico performs at the Expedia Cultural Exchange Pavilion during the 2025 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans on April 24, 2025. The group, hailing from Santa Cecilia in Oaxaca, blends indigenous brass band traditions with celebratory processions and cultural pageantry. Photo by Gus Bennett. Mixanteña de Santa Cecilia is an indigenous brass band ensemble rooted in the traditions of Santa Cecilia, a community in the Mixtec highlands of Oaxaca, Mexico. Known for their powerful street processions and fiestas, the group carries on the legacy of Mixtec musical traditions that merge indigenous rhythms with colonial-era brass instrumentation. Often performing in celebrations honoring saints and agricultural cycles, their music is both a form of cultural resistance and celebration. Their presence at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is a significant bridge between Mesoamerican heritage and Afro-Caribbean diaspora music, showcasing the global reach of indigenous expression and the cultural kinship shared through rhythm and ritual.
