Another one from Scalber Force, but this time the classic shot. Don’t get me wrong, I do like this one, but I’m always trying to see spectacular locations differently as to avoid the expected. If you haven’t been there, it’s a wonderful spot and when you are down in the canyon it feels like you are in a lost world. That is if there isn’t other photographers there looking for the same experience!
Housing Bubble
You've all heard of 'The Housing Bubble', but have you ever SEEN one?
This is great fun, difficult to do if there's the slightest breeze, frustrating at times and, above all, full of surprises! I had expected to see a soap bubble full of flowers, but instead ended up with a soap bubble with a distorted double reflection of the front of my house! (see the large version) The daisies are Osteospermum.
Astronomers found something they weren't expecting at the heart of the globular cluster NGC 6397: a concentration of smaller black holes lurking there instead of one massive black hole.
Globular clusters are extremely dense stellar systems, which host stars that are closely packed together. These systems are also typically very old — the globular cluster at the focus of this study, NGC 6397, is almost as old as the universe itself. This cluster resides 7,800 light-years away, making it one of the closest globular clusters to Earth. Due to its very dense nucleus, it is known as a core-collapsed cluster.
At first, astronomers thought the globular cluster hosted an intermediate-mass black hole. These are the long-sought "missing link" between supermassive black holes (many millions of times our Sun's mass) that lie at the cores of galaxies, and stellar-mass black holes (a few times our Sun's mass) that form following the collapse of a single massive star. Their mere existence is hotly debated. Only a few candidates have been identified to date.

I was not expecting to pull a bat out of the water today. This little bat was attacked by seagulls then dropped into the river. While I was looking for something to reach it the bat flipped over and started swimming for the dock. I picked it up, it was pissed, and put in in a bucket until after work. I took it to an abandoned building, in safe spot. It was still pissed when i took it out of the bucket. Seemed to be fine, other than bothered.

On the patch - Although some Eurasian Wigeon show slight bit of green occasionally this may be just beyond what would be expected for a pure one and its likely that it has some American Wigeon in its Genes a few generations back. Nice bird anyway.

You might not expect to come upon a castle while visiting Spokane, but that is exactly what you will do if you visit the Spokane County courthouse. Most of us associate such architecture with romantic old castles in Europe, or perhaps something out of the world of Walt Disney or fairy tales. To find such a building in the center of a modern, growing regional hub city such as Spokane is a bit startling.
The courthouse is said to closely resemble two famous 16th century chateaux in the Loire Valley of France, the Chateau de Chambord, built in 1519 and the Chateau d'Azay Le Rideau built in 1516. Many architects through the years have commented on the masterly replica of a 16th century French Renaissance design, its fine lines of style and proportion with regard to the towers and turrets, the sculpture, iron and brickwork which excel in pattern and craftsmanship. Detailed exterior trim such as shell patterns with wreaths and festoons and decorative arches are a few of the outstanding features of its design. The beautiful center tower, now lighted at night, is a masterpiece of detail in itself.

I did not expect to see a Pacific Wren on St. Paul Island. This Pribilof subspecies is about 30% larger than the regular (mainland) species and has a longer bill. However, they sing as loud as any other Pacific Wren :). The are permanent resident on the Island. However, when the winter is very harsh, their population decreases substantially. We saw several of them in very good conditions so I have to assume that the last winter on the Island was kind to them. We were lucky. I saw reports from previous years visitors indicating they only saw one of these bird during their visit.
Worthing Borough Council has commissioned Five Rivers Environmental Contracting to create a new thriving natural habitat for a diverse range of wildlife at the lake.
The project is expected to take 12 weeks but this will depend on the weather.
Expecting to take sunset photos of Bass Harbor Lighthouse in Acadia National Park, we abruptly needed a plan B when the parking lot and road leading to lighthouse was packed. Luckily found this marsh to catch the sunset. Bass Harbor Marsh. Acadia National Park. Mount Desert Island. Maine.

Surprise !!! Clowesia warscewiczii. There are plants you don't expect to find because you think they live in another region and suddenly they appear in situ during an 11 days tour I guided in Valle del Cauca and Cauca departments, Colombia. Moreover a genus I had never seen blooming in its native habitat !

I wasn't quite expecting this kind of sunrise when I got up at 5:30am and took the drive down here, to St Michael's Mount, on Tuesday morning. It was windy but beautiful and with the terrible weather that has followed, I'm so glad I made the effort.
I was pretty excited to get out my 16-35mm and use it for the first time since loosing it in the Lake District. Thankfully it was found and is now safe and sound back where it belongs, on my camera!
Just love the way it's taking off on little tippy toes, all I've got are deer pics from Bradgate Park at the moment, I'm like a little lost sheep in the evenings without foxes to go and see.
One of the defining features of Oswestry depot over recent years was the sheer volume of unusual or unexpected vehicles that would turn up, often for a matter of days or weeks only, but occasionally staying a little longer to enliven the scene. Here Arriva Midlands, Shrewsbury P&R liveried Dennis Dart SLF 2305 - N305 ENX is pictured while on loan at the depot, having been displaced from its home town by a batch of brand new Optare Versas.
Sometimes, fireworks don't explode where you expect them... Thanks to photoshop, I develop my own technique to put them where I want them to be plus combining this with my DRI technique.

My technique is alway the same:
Three exposures -2EV, 0, +2EV and then temperature adjustement using Lightroom and layering with luminosity mask using photoshop. Removal of distracting stuff with the stamp tool or patch tool. High pass filter to enhance details. Then saturation, contrast selectively control, dodge and burn where need...
DRI stand for Dynamic Range Increase. Three RAW files are used to achieve this. Rather than using a software like Photomatix for instance, I simply use mask to blend, my own way, the light, dark and normal shot with Photoshop and Lightroom.. To me, It looks more natural than the usual HDR treatment that I would normally applied.

DRI vient de l'anglais Dynmic Range Increase, qui pourrait se traduire par étendue dynamique améliorée. Les même 3 fichiers RAW entrent dans la composition d'un DRI. Plutôt que de se servir d'un logiciel comme Photomatix qui fait tout le travail, je me sers plutôt de masques pour filtrer l'éclairage dans photoshop et Lightroom. De mon point de vue, cette façon de faire donne une image plus naturel que le traitement HDR que j'employais auparavant.

Having checked the Watercress Line's website earlier in the week, I was expecting only diesels to be hauling trains this weekend due to the hot, dry weather and associated fire risk. That made it a nice surprise when I heard a whistle in the distance and saw S15 Class 506 heading up the hill from Alresford.

I'm approximately one year into fanning on the CP North Toronto sub and in the 13ish months, I've learned to never be suprised at anything CP does. With rumors flying left right and center about the SD70ACUs being mandated trailing locomotives, it was both suprising and not suprising (becuase CP) that one was going to be the sole power on a Chicago to Toronto autorack train. Fast forward a day, CP 2-240 is in Wolverton with CP 7058 and they decide to lift UP 4101 (Who came into Wolverton on a different train). Also; shocker, they were running light power to Toronto with a lift at Hornby. Unexpectedly (or maybe it should be expected), they lifted 3 tankers in Hornby and continued east, not stopping (aside from getting blocked by GO) until Toronto yard.
When I say expect the unexpected, its in reference to these sub 10 car trains that routinely see on "autorack" trains.

Toronto just opened its biggest new park in a generation—and it’s absolutely stunning

Toronto unveiled its largest new park in a generation on Friday and it is a stunner. This expansive park is part of a major flood protection and revitalization effort that is reshaping the city’s eastern waterfront and setting the foundation for future sustainable communities.
Biidaasige Park sits on Ookwemin Minising, a new island formed through the re-routing and naturalization of the Don River. The name Ookwemin Minising means “place of the black cherry trees” in Anishinaabemowin and reflects the landscape’s Indigenous roots. The creation of the island and park was driven by the need for flood protection in the Port Lands, one of the largest urban renewal efforts in North America.
The Port Lands Flood Protection project, which involved rebuilding the mouth of the Don River, was designed not just to safeguard over 174 hectares of land from future flooding, but to create new natural environments and accessible public space. Biidaasige Park is the first completed public amenity on this reimagined terrain.
Biidaasige Park sprawls over 50 acres.
Biidaasige (pronounced bee-daw-sih-geh) means “sunlight shining toward us,” and the park lives up to its name with bright, open spaces, extensive native plantings, and dynamic features for recreation and play. The park space is spread over a whopping 50 acres (20 hectares) today—with another 10 acres (4 hectares) coming in 2026—the park includes:
•An incredible and huge naturally contoured playground with larger-than-life animal sculptures representing Indigenous dodems (clans)
•The city of Toronto’s first-ever ziplines, which are modest but super fun
•The Badlands Scramble, a waterplay and climbing area
•Picnic grounds and two dog off-leash zones
•A pebble beach-style landing area for launching kayaks and canoes
•Fishing platforms and step-downs to the river for nature access
•Trails for walking and cycling
•Wetlands and native vegetation for birdwatching, including the Don Greenway wetland corridor
This first phase alone features over 5,000 trees, 77,000 shrubs, and two million herbaceous plants—all part of a carefully restored riverine ecosystem.
What makes the new park so impressive, beyond the playground and the amazing spaces designed for people to congregate and enjoy the area, is that it sprawls and you can explore much further afield than one might think up a first visit.
The trails actually run on the other side of the new Don River and stretch all the way to the shipping channel south of the park, which provides an incredible experience for visitors. An area rarely seen up close by anyone who lives here.
Any active types, joggers, cyclists, paddle boarders and kayakers will love this new play space, especially when combined with Cherry Beach for an epic loop option.
While Biidaasige Park is the first completed piece of public space on Ookwemin Minising, the broader vision is ambitious. At 98 acres (39 hectares), the island is expected to eventually support more than 15,000 residents, nearly 3,000 jobs, and 15 additional acres of parkland. Mixed-use developments and sustainable housing are already in planning, made possible by the foundational flood protection work.
The naturalization of the Don River and the creation of Biidaasige Park represent a significant environmental milestone. Where once stood a neglected industrial floodplain, there is now a living river valley with new habitat, green infrastructure, and public access to water—all designed to withstand the climate-related challenges of the future.
The next phase of development will see the expansion of the island community and additional parks and public amenities. The Lassonde Art Trail will open in 2026 alongside the park’s final section. And with plans to accelerate housing construction on both Ookwemin Minising and the adjacent Quayside lands, this newly accessible stretch of the Toronto waterfront is poised to become a model of sustainable and inclusive urban growth.

Arguably one of my favorite and least expected spots was this awesome 6X6 from Fürth.
I rarely get to spot cars at this hotel, but I noticed this massive vehicle from miles away. I was just quick enough to spot it before the owner would leave. The 6X6 is rare, with "more than 100" having been made. And it's far too large for German roads and expensive, too. Slowly, most of them are migrating out of Europe.
Looks like our resident deer may have more babies again this year. The deer on the other side of the tree is from her first litter and the brother was hit by a car. The two that were born from last year are no longer seen. We don't know what happened to them, it was too early for them to leaver their mother. A bit sad but I suppose that is what happens.
