Luke 15:12-13
New International Version
12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.
13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.
“The fragrance of white tea is the feeling of existing in the mists that float over waters; the scent of peony is the scent of the absence of negativity: a lack of confusion, doubt, and darkness; to smell a rose is to teach your soul to skip; a nut and a wood together is a walk over fallen Autumn leaves; the touch of jasmine is a night's dream under the nomad's moon.”

The Krall Barn is believed to be the oldest existing log barn in Lebanon County. The effort to save it first kicked off in 2007, when the structure, then located east of Schaefferstown, was saved from destruction by a cooperating owner, Howard Scharff, who worked with Schaefferstown’s Bill Ross by offering to donate the barn if it was dismantled. The way it stands now, most of the exterior of the Krall Barn is nearly complete. But there are many smaller, inside projects yet to be tackled. The education center is expected to make it easier for visitors to enjoy their time at the 110 acre historic site that features three locks of the Union Canal, an engineering feat visited by none less than President George Washington himself during its construction.

There was no singing an dancing in the rain possible because of the not existing physical preconditions (no legs, no voice). Still this little vineyard snail (at least I think, that it is one) is cutting a quite good figure while it is coming out of my flowery border. If I can talk about a figure in connection with a snail. During my shooting I found out, that these are quite shy contemporaries. I needed some patiens until she/he did risk to come out of the shell.

This is our final look at the Low Head Lighthouse. It stands here in all its glory showing off the red stripe that was added in 1926. As I've indicated before, this Victorian lighthouse was built in 1888 to replace the 1833 convict built tower that was in danger of collapsing. It is Australia's third oldest continually existing lighthouse.
For those who haven't seen the entire slideshow I have posted it below with the accompanying song "Let Your Light Shine on Me".
On Saturday, we explored a popular part of Dartmoor which we have left out so far - the Bellever forest and Bellever Tor area. We mixed up the existing hiking paths to create our own circular walk and that way came across a range of interesting sights, including more fascinating Bronze Age relics. The photo is from the granite stacks of Bellever Tor. Being the highest point in that area there's fabulous 360 degrees distant views into Dartmoor. A little break in the otherwise darker day provided some nice sunlight on the rocks for my photo.
For anyone interested, here a video of our walk: youtu.be/1HLD261iI0k

Stallwang is a municipality in the district of Straubing-Bogen in Bavaria, Germany. The settlement took place around the 8th and 9th centuries by the monastery Pfaffenmünster near Steinach. The place was part of the Electorate of Bavaria, but formed a closed Hofmark of the barons of Poissl. The current political community was founded in 1818.
This chapel is located near Schönstein and it is unknown when it was erected. In 1977, a statue of John of Nepomuk from the 18th century was stolen and sold to a receiver in Regensburg. However, an existing photographic image allowed to identify the stolen effigy and to solve the case. The figure is now in the chapel St. Anton in Schönstein.
The 121st edition of the Kottayam Boat Race / Champions Boat League (CBL), held on 29 OCT 2022.
Due to covid in 2020 & 2021 boat race was not held.
Kottayam Boat Race, more popular as the Thazhathangadi Vallamkali, taking place in the Meenachil river every year. The competition traces its beginning in the existing form to 1888-90 period, when the then Diwan Peshkar (district collector) T. Rama Rao organised the regatta. The Diwan categorised the boats for the event as Chundans, Veppus, Irittukuthis and Churulans. For various reasons boat race had an abrupt end in 1986. After 12 years it was restarted. There was a time when the boat race attracted the attention star guests like the former Ethiopian Emperor, Haile Salassie, who had instituted a trophy.
Not personally, one presumes.
Built on the site of an existing Saxon hall, Corfe Castle was an early stone castle built on a natural mound, starting in the 1080s.The Normans more commonly built wooden castles (Baileys) on man-made mounds (Mottes). Corfe Castle continued in use for centuries, several English Kings residing here for short periods. It was eventually ‘slighted’ ie damaged beyond use in the English Civil War in 1648.
The site had been the scene of the bloody murder of King Edward the Martyr in 978 at the behest of his wicked step-mother, Elfrida. A plaque in the village commemorates the 1000th year since his murder. Personally, I’d rather not be murdered and go without the 1000 year plaque, which, admittedly is a pretty cool thing to have. I mean, how many people get to be commemorated a whole millennium after their death? Not many!

Every year in Spring the Common Cranes arrive in Sweden from Spain and Germany. They have arrived to perform their mating dance. It is a spectacle I have looked forward to for years and it did not disappoint. The first two days the weather was really bad, torrential rain and low visibility and -6deg C
Cranes are monogamous and most arrive with their partners among the thousands of other birds, whooper swans, coots, grebes and geese. The call and noise of these birds is deafening but a sight to behold. Day 3 finally the weather forecast showed good weather but -15C. It was a wonderful red, orange sky, aflame with thousands of birds arriving.
They flew across the flaming sky and danced, pirouetting, bowing which helps in establishing life long bonds with existing and new partners.
When nesting, Common cranes "paint" their bodies with mud or decaying vegetation, apparently in order to blend into their nesting environment. The nest is either in or very near shallow water, often with dense shore vegetation nearby, and may be used over several years.
Mythology has it that the crane, if treated with due respect, will bring luck, success and a long life. Farmers in western Sweden have a long tradition of paying homage to the bird by mimicking its leggy gait in a ritual dance around the farmhouse.
An amazing experience despite the freezing temperatures and one that I will always remember.

First offering with my new macro lens
I could not resist a chance to take some shots, and see what the new camera and macro lens can do. ;o)
I want the lens overwhelmingly for outdoor macro shooting, and ideally hand-held rather than always needing a tripod. My current 30mm macro lens is quite unforgiving when hand-held, and I rarely use it when I'm out and about. So I've been looking online and on Flickr to try to find a lens that could complement my existing macro, and add something different to my range of lenses.
The lens I decided on is too heavy for the small NEX body, so I found an older Sony A Mount camera body for it ... certainly heavy and bulky compared to the NEX! And plenty to learn and discover as I get used to both camera and lens ;o)
So when the sun shone early yesterday morning I took it out into the garden, where the new young shoots on the honeysuckle held plenty of raindrops. This is just one tiny leaf in the sunshine. And yes - the rain came back by midday!!

Red Deer - Cervus elaphus
Double click
The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is one of the largest deer species. The red deer inhabits most of Europe, the Caucasus Mountains region, Asia Minor, Iran, parts of western Asia, and central Asia. It also inhabits the Atlas Mountains region between Morocco and Tunisia in northwestern Africa, being the only species of deer to inhabit Africa. Red deer have been introduced to other areas, including Australia, New Zealand, United States, Canada, Peru, Uruguay, Chile and Argentina. In many parts of the world, the meat (venison) from red deer is used as a food source.
The red deer is the fourth-largest deer species behind moose, elk and sambar deer. It is a ruminant, eating its food in two stages and having an even number of toes on each hoof, like camels, goats and cattle. European red deer have a relatively long tail compared to their Asian and North American relatives. Subtle differences in appearance are noted between the various subspecies of red deer, primarily in size and antlers, with the smallest being the Corsican red deer found on the islands of Corsica and Sardinia and the largest being the Caspian red deer (or maral) of Asia Minor and the Caucasus Region to the west of the Caspian Sea. The deer of central and western Europe vary greatly in size, with some of the largest deer found in the Carpathian Mountains in Central Europe.Western European red deer, historically, grew to large size given ample food supply (including people's crops), and descendants of introduced populations living in New Zealand and Argentina have grown quite large in both body and antler size. Large red deer stags, like the Caspian red deer or those of the Carpathian Mountains, may rival the wapiti in size. Female red deer are much smaller than their male counterparts.
The European red deer is found in southwestern Asia (Asia Minor and Caucasus regions), North Africa and Europe. The red deer is the largest non-domesticated land mammal still existing in Ireland. The Barbary stag (which resembles the western European red deer) is the only member of the deer family represented in Africa, with the population centred in the northwestern region of the continent in the Atlas Mountains. As of the mid-1990s, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria were the only African countries known to have red deer.
In the Netherlands, a large herd (ca. 3000 animals counted in late 2012) lives in the Oostvaarders Plassen, a nature reserve. Ireland has its own unique subspecies. In France the population is thriving, having multiplied fivefold in the last half-century, increasing from 30,000 in 1970 to approximately 160,000 in 2014. The deer has particularly expanded its footprint into forests at higher altitudes than before. In the UK, indigenous populations occur in Scotland, the Lake District, and the South West of England (principally on Exmoor). Not all of these are of entirely pure bloodlines, as some of these populations have been supplemented with deliberate releases of deer from parks, such as Warnham or Woburn Abbey, in an attempt to increase antler sizes and body weights. The University of Edinburgh found that, in Scotland, there has been extensive hybridisation with the closely related sika deer.
Several other populations have originated either with "carted" deer kept for stag hunts being left out at the end of the hunt, escapes from deer farms, or deliberate releases. Carted deer were kept by stag hunts with no wild red deer in the locality and were normally recaptured after the hunt and used again; although the hunts are called "stag hunts", the Norwich Staghounds only hunted hinds (female red deer), and in 1950, at least eight hinds (some of which may have been pregnant) were known to be at large near Kimberley and West Harling; they formed the basis of a new population based in Thetford Forest in Norfolk. Further substantial red deer herds originated from escapes or deliberate releases in the New Forest, the Peak District, Suffolk, Lancashire, Brecon Beacons, and North Yorkshire, as well as many other smaller populations scattered throughout England and Wales, and they are all generally increasing in numbers and range. A census of deer populations in 2007 and again in 2011 coordinated by the British Deer Society records the red deer as having continued to expand their range in England and Wales since 2000, with expansion most notable in the Midlands and East Anglia.
The striking round tower of St Andrew’s in Letheringsett, Norfolk, was erected shortly after 1086, but the rest of the church was not added to the tower until 1234. St Andrew's is one of 124 existing round-tower churches in Norfolk. The church appears on a Royal Mail stamp issued in June 1972 as part of a set on British Architecture (village churches).
Kaikidou (開基堂) is the mausoleum of Houjou Tokimune (北条時宗). He was the 8th Regent and the donor of the Zen temple. He is supposed to be buried beneath the mausoleum. The existing structure was largely repaired or restored in 1811.
He is noted for successfully acting the Commander in Chief of the Expedition Force against the Barbarians (the official title of Minamoto shoguns). More specifically, he repelled two invasions by the Mongolian and Korean forces in 1274 and 1281.
Their invasions were on the northern coast of Kyuushuu Island, for which Tokimune dispatched commanders and warriors to the southern Island. The shogunate took this opportunity to strengthen their rule over western Japan.
Japan is one of the rare countries in Asia that could repel the Mongolian invasions thanks largely to the Sea of Japan. However, Japan's Sumo league is now almost conquered by Mongolian wrestlers.
The Jakob-Kaiser-Haus is the largest complex of government offices built in connection with the transfer of the German federal government from Bonn to Berlin. It houses the staff of the governing coalition members and comprises over 2,000 office rooms, two large committee halls, many conference rooms, extensive cafeteria facilities and a fully-equipped TV studio. The complex was designed and built by a consortium of four architecture firms. The section designed by de Architekten Cie. forms roughly a quarter of the whole complex. It is situated in a prominent location between the Reichtsag and the Brandenburger Tor.
The building encloses two courtyards, one of which has been covered with a glass roof. The resulting space serves as an entrance hall for the southern part of the Jakob-Kaiser-Haus. The wooden panelling gives the entrance hall the character of an interior room; the adjacent courtyard exudes, by contrast, a sense of external space. The two courtyards remain in visual contact with each other by a two-storey tall opening at ground level, interrupting the strictly orthogonal main structure of the master plan. The street façades reflect the theme of the interior court in two different ways. The Ebertstrasse façade, providing a view of the Tiergartenpark, presents a lively clair obscur by way of the three-dimensional effect of the natural stone framework with its recessed terracotta panels. Attached to the Dorotheenstrasse façade is an additional glass “shell” which marks the entrance and places an accent in the street with its primarily stony façades. Seen from the working spaces the glass shell creates a visual wintergarden, increasing in this narrow street the users` privacy. The previously existing building, the Kammer der Technik built between 1912 and 1914, has been entirely integrated into the new structure. From a functional viewpoint, its office spaces fit in seamlessly with the new building.

I guess castles always have a touch of Romance about them certainly Dunstanburgh Castle on the edge of the North Sea seems particularly magical. Taken a very warm July day back in 2013
Dunstanburgh Castle is a 14th-century fortification on the coast of Northumberland in northern England, located between the villages of Craster and Embleton. The castle was built by Earl Thomas of Lancaster between 1313 and 1322, taking advantage of the site's natural defences and the existing earthworks of a former Iron Age fort. Thomas was a leader of a baronial faction opposed to King Edward II, and probably intended Dunstanburgh to act as a secure refuge, should the political situation in southern England deteriorate. The castle also served as a statement of the earl's wealth and influence, and would have invited comparisons with the neighbouring royal castle of Bamburgh. Thomas probably only visited his new castle once, before being captured at Battle of Boroughbridge as he attempted to flee royal forces for the safety of Dunstanburgh. Thomas was executed, and the castle became the property of the Crown, before passing into the Duchy of Lancaster.

The Bumblebee is considered an insect of high social standards existing in colonies of normally 50 - 400 individuals which is considered small compared to honey bees whose numbers can get as high as 50,000 per colony.
Young queen bumblebees exit their nest in the fall season and after mating possibly numerous times will feed frantically to build up fat reserves prior to entering hibernation underground for the winter months. As the weather cools off the males and workers expire including the males the queen mated with. As the weather warms in spring the queens emerge from hibernation and begin searching for a suitable location to begin a colony. Once she has established her site she begins building wax cells that she will deposit her eggs that were fertilized last fall into. The first hatching will produce 4 -8 workers that will take over her duties and feeding future young leaving the queen to focus her attention on laying eggs to populate the colony.
There are over 250 species of bees throughout the world and many of them nest underground to avoid the extreme heat that can be generated from direct sunlight.
The female bumblebee can inflict a sting that is rather painful and she can sting repeatedly but thankfully they tend to avoid people and animals.
A long, hairy proboscis is used to lap up the liquid when feeding on nectar to add to their stores and pollen to to feed to the young. Our red clover crop is pretty much totally dependent on bumblebees for pollination since they are the only insect with a tongue long enough to reach the nectar.
This pictured bee displays the pollen basket adhered to the modified hind leg of nesting bumblebees for transporting pollen back to the nest.
