Exercise 'Phoenix' held at Sandwell Hospital Saturday, January 10 2009.

15 fire crews from West Midlands Fire Service and Staffordshire FB attended along with staff members and NHS workers from Sandwell Hospital.

Emergency crews, chemical experts and decontamination teams were put through their paces dealing with a mock chemical incident at Sandwell Hospital.

The ‘incident’ involved a bus full of passengers arriving at the hospital after an unknown chemical was released onboard. They had to be treated and decontaminated, while the chemical had to be identified and dealt with.

Getting to know the new "gym"

THE biggest live exercise of its kind ever held in Greater Manchester – Exercise Triton II – came to an end this morning (Friday, July 16, 2016) after months of intense planning.

Around 36 organisations across the region and nationally have been taking part in this major emergency planning exercise which saw dozens of emergency vehicles at sites across Greater Manchester and Chinook helicopters flying across the skies.

The complex scenario used was designed to test how local authorities, emergency services and other partners are equipped to tackle a major emergency working together.

Participating ‘players’ also included the military, government, health and utility companies, as well as voluntary agencies.

The exercise started on Monday, July 11, 2016, with ‘warnings’ from the Met Office regarding adverse weather and from the Environment Agency about the growing risk of regional flooding.

The emergency services, including Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), and partners put procedures in place to ensure that where possible properties and critical infrastructure were protected and the public were warned. This theme was carried on through Tuesday, July 12 and Wednesday, July 13, 2016.

To ensure that both players and plans were tested to their full, a dramatic scenario developed on Thursday, July 14, whereby the bank on the Dove Stone Reservoir in Oldham was breached and water cascaded through a number of boroughs within Greater Manchester.

This meant that evacuation procedures had to be put in place and rest centres set up. Later in the day, a coach ploughed into the River Tame in a mock crash and a full-scale search and rescue operation was carried out.

Paul Argyle, GMFRS’ Deputy County Fire Officer and Chair of Greater Manchester Resilience Forum, said: “Exercise Triton II was a hugely complex emergency planning exercise and I would like to thank all of the agencies that have taken part this week.

"This was a very detailed scenario which had impacts across every part of the region and necessitated a full range of partners taking part.

"The scale of the destruction and chaos in the exercise was deliberately designed to test the region at full stretch.

"We have to do this to ensure we are well prepared to deal with any future real-life event or disaster that might occur – and it is also invaluable that those taking part got the chance to practise essential response skills that would be used during a major incident like this.

"I would particularly like to thank all the volunteers who took part in this exercise. The patience and understanding of local residents and communities on Thursday (as response plans went into effect at 'live' sites) was also greatly appreciated.

“All players have now been 'stood down'. Our next task is to evaluate how the exercise went, step by step. We will want to find out what worked well and crucially to identify and learn any lessons that could help us in the future in real-life situations. I would like to point out that incidents as extreme as this are highly unlikely, but ensuring we practice our response means that we are ready to respond to a variety of scenarios."

On times when the economy is down, we have to save money on everything that we do and one of this is car detailing. It does not only save money but this is also a good form of exercise.

Car Detailing the Interior of the Car

By using a vacuum, clean the floor mats and carpets. Remove the stains from the floor mats and carpets by a mild soap or a stain remover. Use a brush if necessary so that the dirt and sticky particles will be removed. Clean the upholstery next, and remove all the stains using a carpet stain remover but be sure that it is compatible with the material of the upholstery.

Clean all dirt found in the doors and other small and tight areas using a cotton swab or a small brush. Carefully wipe the dirty surfaces with a rag and soap solution. Use liquid cleaning fluid and a rag to remove the slimy, heavy and ugly markings on the interior areas. You may need to use a toothbrush or cotton swabs in cleaning intricate ornaments found in the interior. Always use dry cloth in drying the surface interior. The window should be cleaned with window cleaning fluid, soap solution, toothbrush and cotton swabs to the column of the steering wheel. After cleaning, spray the surface with a spray on protectant. By using the rag and soap solution, clean the center console and dashboard.

Car Detailing the Exterior of the Car

Use car cleaning detergents that are designed for cleaning the surface of car exteriors and soft cloth or chamois. Use generous amount of water in cleaning and rinsing the car. Make sure that the water you

are using is clean. Change the water when it becomes cloudy. Rinse the car right after washing so that the detergent will not sit on the pain which will cause oxidation. Wipe and dry the car with a soft towel.

Pre-Car Detailing Procedures

If you are a professional car detailer, it is a prerequisite to evaluate the car first together with the owner. This is necessary for the owner must know and you should bring to their attention the damages that you saw and document it. The damages could be dings, dents, scratches or scuffs. Make it a point to walk around with the owner if the car and point out all things to the owner of the car, for the owner may not know the other damages. For vehicles that are heavy with dirt, wash the vehicles first before the car evaluation and the cost of car detailing.

There are instances that the owner may not be around when you do the evaluation of the car. You have to continue with the walk around evaluation and take not of all the damages. Before even starting with the car detailing, call the car owner and report to him all the damages that you have seen so that you will not be held liable. The owner must confirm to you the damages that you saw before you even start with the detailing. Same should apply if you are in the middle of the work and you saw some more damages, take time and report this to the owner.

One reason for the evaluation of the car before undergoing car detailing is in determining the price of the job and how long it will take before the completion of detailing. Have a listing of all the things that need evaluation, both interior and exterior of the car. All of the things items in the list will need looking after and it will cost your time and chemicals which are the determining factor in giving the price for your customer. Give the list and quotation to the car owner so that he has an idea of how much it will cost him and you at the same time can explain the things that you will do to his car and why you need to charge that amount.

If the car owner is not agreeable to your price, ask your client if they not want to get some of the things done from your list so that you can come out with the price that is both beneficial to you. This is the best way that you can do instead of just decreasing the price of car detailing.

Sitting at a computer for long periods often causes neck and shoulder stiffness and ocassionally lower back pain. Do these stretches every hour or so throughout the day, or whenever you feel stiff. Photocopy this and keep it in a drawer. Also, be sure to get up and walk around the office whenever you think of it. You'll feel better!

Protesters demonstrating peacefully for a ceasefire in Gaza filmed by the police

I should state that from my limited observations, these particular police officers appeared to be acting (at least from the perspective of their official remit) in a thoroughly professional manner and I never saw them act in an unfriendly way towards myself or anyone else. However, even if it might be argued that protesters should be filmed in case anything happens for which legal evidence is needed, it is deeply worrying to think of how those in government and those in the command of the police might potentially use such footage.

I should also add that I have no reason at all to suspect that any of those filmed were doing anything but exercising their democratic right to peaceful protest. I also have no reason to suspect that any of them had any knowledge of what occurred at the Ministry of Defence later the same afternoon, which appears to have been an action taken by a small number of activists.

On Wednesday 10 April, activists from Palestine Action and Youth Demand as well as other protesters marched through central London, to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an end to the two way arms trade with Israel. This particular image was taken in Victoria Embankment Gardens.

Writer and social activist Lisa Minerva Luxx, writing for Al Jazeera, observes that "since October (2023), our government's steadfast support for Israel has ushered in a new age of state coercion, exposing in its wake the artifice of democracy in Britain," adding that the government has "expanded police powers and moved to weaponise concerns over so-called "extremism". Its leading figures referred to peaceful protesters exercising their democratic rights as "mobs" and "hate marchers'', classifying any and all opposition to Israel's war and occupation as hate and racism" and that "our group, Palestine Action, is also facing the threat of being labelled as "extremist" due to the principled actions our front-line members have taken to put an end to Britain's complicity in Israel's occupation and ethnic cleansing of Palestinian territories."
