... over the Exe Estuary from Starcross, Devon.
See my other Starcross sunrise photos (sorry there's rather a lot of them [young children often get us up early!], but, amazingly, it's always a different scene!)
At long last, clear skies and a gorgeous sunrise this morning, hopefully preceding a fine sunny day! The Exe Estuary at low tide taken from Starcross, Devon, England. [No post-processing.]

1904 Thames Barge
Official No. 116176, 73 ton. Built of wood at Ipswich in 1904 by Orvis & Fuller
Owned by Alfred Horlock, who considered her to be a very fast barge, before she was converted to a yacht in 1932. Sold back into trade and converted to motor barge by Whiting Bros.
Passed to L.R.T.C. Owned by Dawes, Thomas and Martin. as private barge yacht until sold to Ms. Lynn Johnson & Graham Head in late 1997 and she was based at Woodbridge, Suffolk.
She moved to St Osyth in 2004, looking like she would end her days there. However, in a late twist for the barge, she was bought, patched up with plywood and motored around the South Coast under her own power to Topsham, Devon, where a restoration has been started.
She has been reframed and replanked, new hatch combings and had a new transom installed. Notably, her transom now says ‘Vigilant – Topsham’.
Being restored at Topsham Quay

... passing Starcross station, by the Exe Estuary, Devon, England. You can just see that it's a special 'double header' with the King Edward I leading the Nunney Castle (see: www.railwayherald.org/imaging.centre/classbyclass/steam/g... for others' photos on this and previous runs).
The 6024 King Edward I was built in 1930 and is run by the 6024 Preservation Society charity (see: www.6024.com/home.htm). The engines were on a three-day tour along the entire length of the Great Western Railway from London to Penzance and back to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the creation of the GWR.

Yesterday evening on the Exe Estuary at Topsham, Devon. As taken, apart from a slight crop. (I did think of removing the pylon(s) but, as I was otherwise happy with it, I wanted to leave it as taken.)
The gulls are part of the usual evening flight to roost further down the estuary and/or on the sea.

This part of the nature reserve adjoins a golf course and is private, but we are fortunate to have access for the monthly Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) high tide count which is carried out across wetlands in the UK. The Exe Estuary is important for wintering wildfowl and waders and has a number of designations: Dawlish Warren itself is a National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), as is most of the estuary as well, as well as a Ramsar site and Special Protection Area.

Drascombe Dabber
The split-rig Dabber offers 118 sq.ft. of sail in the traditional yawl rig of the Drascombe range, offering flexibility of sail plan. Should the wind drop, a small outboard is quite adequate to propel her briskly along, or she can easily be rowed from two positions.
With plenty of stowage space and easy handling the Dabber makes a great little family boat, easily trailed, and quickly rigged.
Her design is derived from traditional clinker built boats, from which the Dabber gains her seaworthiness, easy rowing and excellent shallow water capabilities, for which she is fitted with a handcrafted marine ply drop plate rudder.
The yawl rig has a standing lug mainsail, with a jib set flying with a bowsprit and a mizzen sail mounted on the transom with a bumpkin. Both are easily removed for mooring.

This is another shot I took during my pre-dawn morning on the Exe estuary. It was taken about 20 minutes before sunrise and was feeling a bit too dark to be photographing moving subjects like swimming swans, but I think it turned out OK.

A still Exe Estuary, from Starcross, Devon, England, this morning. I love the ever changing weather, light and tides of 'our estuary view', especially in the early mornings as the sun rises across the estuary (clouds and weather permitting!). It can look so very different one day, or even hour, to another. Worth getting up early for!
