LOVE... the most potent of all human emotions. An emotion so powerful that it can take one to the highest heights or to the deepest depths of despair. LOVE has the uncanny ability to hear, to hurt, to come and to go. Ironically, in spite of it all, LOVE serves as the driving force of all human existence. Be it through music, poetry or the visual arts, artists have been compelled to reconcile the majesty of this emotion through their art for centuries. Contemporary artist, Henry Asencio is no exception. Noted for his beautiful forms of human expression, Asencio paints the human condition with an introspective sensuality unique to and celebrated in his work. Asencio’s Sentiments is a visual trilogy comprised of separate but beautifully related images that serve to commemorate but a few of the many dilemmas of love. From the painful longing and insatiable hunger for a lover (“Desire”), the introspection and fear that accompanies the hesitation of giving one’s heart to another (“Conviction”) to the ultimate comfort that follows one’s resignation to succumb - to give and receive love (“Liberation”). Quintessential Asencio in execution and style, the artist paints clues to his storytelling via color, posture, pose and intentional inscriptions etched into the impasto layers of his canvases. From “An acquired comfort” in “Conviction” to “Delam barat tang shode” (translated “I miss you”) in “Desire”- the artist invites us to read into his love to paint and his compulsion to paint about love. In the end, they are all “Sentiments” in which we find the “Liberation” to love.

Acclaimed for his sensual figurative paintings, contemporary artist Henry Asencio continues to merge his own dreams and visions into artistic inspiration and visual fantasy with his latest work titled, Day Dream. Amidst the glow of the rising sun, Asencio’s muse sits delicately in a contemplative pose consumed in thought or reverie. Asencio’s choice of frantic hues serves to reflect a secret, burning desire. Has she awoken from a dream or yearning to awaken a dream of her own? Dreams are nothing more than wishes. The power of one’s daydreams or the passive thinking of quiet, subconscious desires is the basis in which great things can transpire. For what is a work of art other than a dream or a daydream expressed within a formal aesthetic. Henry Asencio’s artistic talent lies within the power of his own subconscious translation. And just as he shares his beautiful visions with us, we are empowered to contemplate the fulfillment of our own hopes, wishes and desires.

The visual poetry of contemporary artist Henry Asencio continues its quest to paint the words of the human spirit. With his signature soulful insight and sensual beauty, Asencio creates more than just stunning works of art, he is the translator of profound emotion and individual grandeur. Asencio’s Haven is a simple, yet powerful image with a message of quiet resolve. He depicts a solitary figure demurely poised in stillness. Frantic color serves as the backdrop as his muse shines before the chaos of her past. Her arms crossing in a gentle embrace, she peers out through the soft cascades of her raven hair. She is ready to face the future. With stoic-confidence, she has found a safe haven within herself, for herself. She is her own shelter, refuge and safety as she faces life’s next challenge. Resting in the moment, she is ready to accept what is without looking back. She has survived and readies to forge ahead. Welcome to Asencio’s Haven. See the beauty and feel the triumph of the past, present and future.

A deceptively simple image of refined elegance and poise, Henry Asencio’s Repose combines the artist’s signature integration of the classical ideals of figurative painting with a unique, contemporary style revered in his work. As Asencio strives to personify his artistic notions and compulsion to paint, he passionately yearns to make each new work more expressive then the last. Repose is a dramatic interpretation of a simple gesture and a quiet state of being. The allure of solitude is transformed into a captivating image juxtaposed with tension and intrigue—solace in the midst of chaos. Symbolic of the approach to his art, the mystique of the female form builds the structure of each new painting. Asencio’s use of color sets the mood and a fury of texture creates an urgency to elicit heart-felt emotion. Abstraction of subconscious thought and reality entwine to tell the artist’s story. Freedom from responsibility, protection from the negative forces that can hold one captive…escapism…for the artist and viewer it is the ultimate intention in his evocative work of art. In essence, Repose seeks to find solace in the midst of chaos.

Like a breath of fresh air, contemporary painter Asencio shares his soulful artistry in yet another exquisite painting. Illumination, as the title and imagery may suggest, speaks of ones’ spiritual quest for enlightenment and truth. A simple palette in content, yet complex in execution, Asencio fills the canvas with intense passion. With the artist’s signature use of color as metaphor, we are transported to a poignant space of personal growth and reverie. Permeating the background of this work is a seemingly frantic aura of the sun. Hot and fiery, yet filled with life-giving energy that supercedes its danger, therein lies the power to transform. Draped in crimson, Asencio’s muse reclines in the foreground as if ready to emerge from a long slumber. The effervescence of her skin sparkles against the darkness that had previously engulfed her. As she faces the light, shadows of doubt dissolve. With quiet trepidation, she is ready to embrace the truth. The quest beings, as we search for that which enlightens our life and clarifies our souls. The truth lurks inside each and every one of us. Sometimes all we need is a little light to shine to open our hearts and minds - and then we, too, will be illuminated.

Unveiling is a provocative image depicting a woman gracefully draped in a crimson robe. Facing the wall, her modesty seems obvious. Yet sensual tension, born of the artistic interplay of shadow and light, reveals an unspoken narrative quintessential of Asencio’s art. Masking an aura of intrepidation, Asencio poses and engulfs his subject in pillars of darkness to create the visual drama in this work. Strong and elegant in posture, the risk of exposure is evident, yet seemingly welcome. Earning its integrity through the subtleties of visual intensity, Asencio extracts and distills the essence of this scene through the mastery of his artistic technique. The artist’s unique combination of color, texture and exquisite form mirrors a state of awareness that serves to reveal his true intentions. Through caution and reserve the artist invites the viewer into this fictitious space in time to enjoy the splendor of the unknown. Although perhaps anticipating a glimpse of the forbidden, the tenderness of the moment is extrapolated and revered in Unveiling. As with all of his images, the sophistication and execution of Asencio’s artistic intentions cannot be denied, nor can they be ignored. Ultimately, Unveiling is a work of contemplation; for the artist, his subject and the viewer. In essence, it is an invitation into the world of Asencio.

Friendships are essential to a woman’s identity. The bond between two women can be as strong as it is delicate. In his latest painting, contemporary artist Henry Asencio sets out to capture the essence of this unique and life affirming bond between two women through color, form and style. Lovely, mysterious and evocative, the figures embrace each other with delicate strength. The women are poised, as if teetering in a moment of connection and liberation. Throughout this painting, Asencio’s women exemplify the epitome of the freedom to be oneself in the presence of another. Dramatically, contrasted in color they harmonize as they begin to intertwine in developing a bond with their bodies and spirit. A harmony and balance permeates in his painting, not only within his figures, but in contrast of texture and mood. Asencio’s power to communicate unspoken messages of loyalty, love, secrets and salvation is evident here, as is his “Celebration” of the special bond of sisterhood.

A beautifully executed drawing has the power to convey an artist’s talent in the most pure and obvious way. Using only a single tool and the movement of the artist’s hand, line and form converge to bring a unique vision into focus. The most elementary of art forms, a drawing is the basis for most master works of art, yet can become a work of art in and of itself. Contemporary painter, Henry Asencio’s series of charcoal studies serve to prove this notion. These drawings are more than the essence of a painting, they are equally simple and complex works of art. Masterfully executed, Asencio’s loose, abstract painting technique is apparent in his drawings. Even in the absence of the explosive color in his paintings these works remain impulsive and dynamic. In spite of a flurry of lines that suggest movement, Asencio is ironically able to capture the sensual stillness signature in all of his compositions. Simple in color, yet complex in his use of light and shadow his drawings possess rich dimension and powerful sensuality. Asencio’s soft, heavily shaded modeling of figure and form is reminiscent of master draftsman Leonardo DiVinci’s “Sfumato” technique. A technique utilizing the blurred outline and mellowed colors of a composition to allow one form to merge with another while artistically striving to leave something to the imagination. And ultimately, it is the imagination of artist and viewer that has the power to transform seemingly simple lines into a work of art. Henry Asencio’s drawings are a testament not only to the artist’s talent but the underlying intrigue of his entire body of work.

Throughout antiquity, a sanctuary has symbolized a place of refuge or perhaps a place to commune with God. At its most basic, it is a shelter to find comfort from the enemies of our mind and in the physical world. Henry Asencio’s “Sanctuary” is neither about a time or a place. It seeks to capture the essence of inner sanctum—the human need for reflection and meditation. And it is this notion that the artist strives to communicate in this exquisite work of art. Asencio’s signature use of color, form and texture coalesce to reveal a contemporary dialogue between the material and the spiritual—the artist, his subject and his subconscious visions derived therein. Agitated by extreme texture and intentional use of color, Asencio unravels an unspoken narrative replete with seemingly incongruent, yet harmonious ideals of quietude and fascinations of that which intensifies the moment. The rich and deeply convincing work of art serves to prove Asencio’s mastery of his chosen medium and the artist’s perpetual desire to balance a human presence amidst his sure, artistic statements. As his private passions, observations and sensitivities awaken the emotional response of the viewer, so is solace in the midst of chaos.
