“Great things begin in silence. Find power in reflection, and the depth that follows, for it is there, that you will discover your life’s poetry.”
— Henry Asencio
We are all consumed by the dichotomies of life. Sometimes splendid contradictions, other times tumultuous oppositions. We look within ourselves, and seek peace. It is necessary to retrieve ourselves from the constant chaos of life because one must rest to be invigorated to face challenges and move forward. In the same manner, an artist must contemplate to create. It is this notion that contemporary artist Henry Asencio strives to communicate in his latest work, Quiescence. Like all of Asencio’s masterful works, we are but spectators, voyeurs, if you will, into a private world of sensual reverie. Profound in his visual language, Asencio’s female nudes are painted energy. Quiescence is a composition of classical stylization as his muse reclines spanning the entire length of canvas. Color accentuates the glow of her skin. The masterful modeling of his paint adds an unsurpassed richness and depth to his work. We are sedated by Asencio’s ability to capture beauty, and in the moment, we find ourselves enjoying respite.

It is the human condition to ponder the notion of eternity; the eternal nature of the universe, the prospect of eternal life and the hope for eternal happiness. Science, religion and philosophy alike have struggled to reconcile the notions of this abstract, yet very real idea. Perhaps it is best left a mystery. But as we contemplate time and its elusive and puzzling character we are forced to reckon with the very nature of our existence. It is an endless search for meaning, purpose and fulfillment. Contemporary artist Henry Asencio has earned a reputation for his integration of abstract speculation within his own abstract approach to painting. His lucid, beautiful figures exist amidst chaotic placement of color and texture that are divine in and of itself. In the end, the artistic is acting on the creative impulses of his soul. We relate because these creative impulses move through each of us and through the world that we create. In Asencio’s Eternity seductive hues of scarlet and crimson engulf his figure as she emerges from the light. Color pulsates like blood pumping through the heart, a vertibale life force. Her raven hair drapes across her eyes, perhaps symbolically, as the raven has often symbolized knowledge and divine providence. A delicate spattering of blue falls around her as if to cleanse, purify and refresh. Yesterday, today and forever - is there a distinction? According to Henry Asencio, one’s existence, like an image captured in a work of art shall remain timeless and eternally beautiful.

The sophisticated, sensual elegance of Henry Asencio’s artistry incites our appreciation for beauty and our yearning to discover its essence.
Although stunning at first glance, upon closer inspection we realize that Asencio’s paintings are a visual embodiment of his ideas and artistic motivations. His compelling images explore conscious and unconscious themes amidst the symbolic content in his art. His messages are ones of beauty, nobility of the human spirit and our collective struggle with transcendence.
Asencio’s mastery of the female form and ability to use color and abstraction to express emotion are testament to his refined artistic talent. His work entitled “Azure” is a perfect illustration of this communion of color and form.
Surrounded by the empty lightness of the blank canvas, a beautiful woman emerges from the abstract wreckage. Loosely draped in a richly colored azure cloth, she stands confident, yet modestly covered as if ready to bare her soul.
The artist’s use of minimal color in this electrifying composition serves to make a more profound statement. Mesmerized, our eyes are immediately drawn to her statuesque pose. She epitomizes sensuality, forever preserved as if immune from the ravages of time. Through the artist’s choice of posture and expression, we are also able to sense the underlying strength of her spirit.
Like all great art, its true power lies in the ability to preserve beauty and illicit an emotional response. Henry Asencio’s masterful portrayals accomplish this through the technique and unique vision.

What do the celebrity mothers get for Mother's Day? Who can resist the adorable attraction of baby animals- Pop Surrealist Artist Michael Summers paints "A Mother's Love", for inclusion into Distinctive Assets "Mother's Day in Hollywood 2012" Celebrity Gift Boxes. Cute!
Perhaps like all artists Henry Asencio cannot help but express his own spiritual quest in each work of his art. Reaching far beyond paint and canvas, Asencio’s abstract figurative works speak to the viewer on many levels. As he renders her body, contemplates her thoughts and paints furiously to expose her very essence we are captivated by his ability to awaken our own soul consciousness. His paintings, like any spiritual journey are a unique and highly personal experience. In Asencio’s latest image titled Spiritual Journey, he sets out to calm our minds and nurture our spirits once again. A sense of tranquility pervades the composition. Personifying the stillness of inward reflection, his muse sits quiet and alone, perhaps meditating. Her triangular pose suggests the 3-fold nature of the self: mind, body and spirit. The random and spontaneous brush strokes of Asencio’s signature style are masculine in application yet serve to create a distinctive balance amidst his femininely delicate subject matter. Here, unusually powerful and unexpected color is discernible upon her back. Layers of color emerge to the surface as if building upon the layers of existence to create a path for her personal journey. In life, metaphorically speaking, we are all given a blank canvas and the potential to create our own masterpiece. Our physical body serves as the paintbrush as we walk along the surface. Our mind - thinking, learning and knowing - reveals our personal style. Then add a journey replete with colorful experiences and textural highs and lows. The art of life, where does one fine the mastery? For artist Henry Asencio it lurks far beyond paint and canvas. And like the muse, we are all the multi-dimensional manifestations of our own minds, bodies and spirits.

Since the beginning of time, varying cultures have deified beauty in female form: Aphrodite in Greek mythology, Lakshmi in Hindu mythology and Venus in Roman mythology to name a few. Although some may argue that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, a mysterious, yet universal enchantment of all woman remains. This primal dynamic is what inspires the eminent works of contemporary painter Henry Asencio. In the artist’s most recent series entitled, Beauty Unfolding, Asencio celebrates the inherent beauty found in ethnic diversity and the way in which these subtle differences define our ideals of female beauty. The current series of five works is a tribute to women from various cultures from around the world. Through his soulful and artistic insights Asencio sets out to capture what each of these women bring to the world at large. What you may notice are the physical nuances of her charm, the tone of her skin, the shape of her face, the curve of her eyes, or the color of her hair, but it is her inner beauty defined by her heritage, culture, language, and beliefs that is the true essence. Ultimately, Asencio paints a collective portrait of feminine majesty in its multi-dimensional, natural and poetic splendor. At a glance you may recognize her, for she represents all that is beautiful culturally. As her “Beauty Unfolds” she bestows a universal grace that cannot be denied.
Proving himself as one of today’s most prolific and accomplished young artists, Henry Asencio presents yet another image from his Sanctuary Series - a group of contemporary figure studies that speaks of poetic situations and dreamlike states. Embrace, appropriately titled, is a delicate image of a woman embraced in her own arms. Asencio’s masterful use of coloration, shadow and abstraction unite to suggest a retaliatory expression of silent retreat and quiet reflection. Beyond the beauty, strength and vitality of Asencio’s chosen subject, an aura of ironic isolation overpowers the composition. As if seeking an emotional fortress within oneself, the artist consciously chose a tighter composition to articulate a heightened sense of intimacy while visually communicating a feeling of enclosure - or perhaps, a desire to escape emotional asphyxiation? Asencio insists that this work is not about one woman’s circumstance, but a universal state of mind familiar to those ever in need of self-reflection and quiet reverie. The resulting image is one that questions the very nature of what is present and what is absent. The artist’s intention to exude a powerful yet sensual undercurrent amidst a commentary of seclusion ultimately gives birth to a visually profound and truly beautiful work of art.

It has been said that the eyes are the windows to the soul. What then is the door that opens the human soul to the divine truths found on life’s journeys? Using this door as a metaphor, contemporary painter Henry Asencio has created a provocative painting infused with a narrative that embodies the chaos of unresolved ideals and the quest for one’s absolute truth. Red Door is a compelling composition that merges the mystery and seduction of complex abstraction with sensual figurative imagery. Vibrant, crimson color pervades his canvas as Asencio haunts and entices the viewers’ curiosity. Conspicuously scratched into the canvas is the word “Escalation” further hinting to the heightened quest for divine truth and the overcoming of negative forces. Adding to the intrigue, Asencio then seduces the eye to a narrow path of light on the edge of the canvas – as if a door has opened to reveal a raven-haired beauty bathed in the radiance of realization. Draped in crimson spilling over from the canvas and drawn toward the light of self-discovery, Asencio’s muse serves as the conduit in the search for enlightenment.
Throughout art history a man’s reverence for his female muse has been etched on cave walls, carved in stone, painted on canvas and written in volumes. The fascination with feminine deities, goddess iconology and pure love for a woman as reflected in art has endured for centuries. And it continues to endure. Contemporary painter Henry Asencio is acclaimed for his exquisitely beautiful and introspective renderings of the female figure. In each of his works of art, Asencio portrays women with dignity and an aura of mystery. Asencio’s “Adoration” pays homage to his ultimate inspiration. The profile captures the complexities and dichotomies inherent in all women. She serves to inspire us to contemplate the power of her essence and to celebrate her very existence. Layers of paint build the substance of this work, reflective of the many layers which comprise the woman – nurturing and tender, yet wrought with potent wisdom and resilient strength. Amid his striking color palette, Asencio’s figure is posed with her hand placed gently on her shoulder. A tender yet strong sense of confidence and acceptance is silently expressed. A quiet pose juxtaposed against a flurry of color and texture serve to convey the artist’s passionate intent. Asencio’s “Adoration” is a tribute to centuries of admiration and the commanding influence of a woman’s presence in our minds, in our hearts and in the very fabric of life itself.

Color is a powerful, visual force that has the ability to affect us on a psychological level. Artists use color to create a mood, a feeling or even express an idea in a work of art. However, great works of art can be created with very little color. And this in itself can have a profound artistic effect. A monochromatic painting is one that is created using a singular color palette and its respective tints and shades. Using a range of tonality to build up form and create a composition is by far one of the greatest artistic challenges for a painter. Contemporary painter Henry Asencio takes on this challenge in his Golden Light Series in which the artist studies the separation of light and dark. And in Asencio’s minimalist effort he shows how less can be so much more. Golden Aura is the first image in this new series. Some believe there are colors that emanate from our very being. Hues that reveal the language of our soul. This “aura”, the invisible halo that surrounds us, is unique to each individual. As a figurative painter, Asencio’s mastery of painting this unseen phenomenon is foremost in distinguishing his work from other artists. In Golden Aura, Asencio fills his canvas with varying tones of crimson infused with ochre in his effort to extract the inner beauty of his muse. Bold, yet subdued, she radiates a warm sensuality apart from her temporal existence. The diving golden energy emanating from this exquisite work of art succeeds in capturing her soul and our attention.
The masterful paintings of young artist Henry Asencio are a poignant collection of contemplative works that bring forth a depth of spiritual reflection amidst the stunning figures and abstract backdrops that serve as the vehicle for his narrative. Born in times of solace when the inner voice rings clear with messages of growth, redemption and enlightenment; Asencio puts paint to canvas and allows his spirit to create and his figures to replace his thoughts and words. Deep and powerful in artistic intention, much of Asencio’s work is about contemplation and revelation of the human spirit, yet the appeal of his paintings lies in the pure visual splendor of his sensual imagery. Epiphany is a work that exemplifies these characteristics. Giving direction to his artistic notions and providing clarity in an ever changing world of chaos and outside influences, Asencio’s muse is poised as if to lunge forward to embrace a new conception of self-acceptance. The white sheet gently falling from the figure is used to suggest the casting off of layers of limitations and outside influences to embrace a sense of freedom and ultimately, a true joy of life and living.

LOVE... the most potent of all human emotions. An emotion so powerful that it can take one to the highest heights or to the deepest depths of despair. LOVE has the uncanny ability to hear, to hurt, to come and to go. Ironically, in spite of it all, LOVE serves as the driving force of all human existence. Be it through music, poetry or the visual arts, artists have been compelled to reconcile the majesty of this emotion through their art for centuries. Contemporary artist, Henry Asencio is no exception. Noted for his beautiful forms of human expression, Asencio paints the human condition with an introspective sensuality unique to and celebrated in his work. Asencio’s Sentiments is a visual trilogy comprised of separate but beautifully related images that serve to commemorate but a few of the many dilemmas of love. From the painful longing and insatiable hunger for a lover (“Desire”), the introspection and fear that accompanies the hesitation of giving one’s heart to another (“Conviction”) to the ultimate comfort that follows one’s resignation to succumb - to give and receive love (“Liberation”). Quintessential Asencio in execution and style, the artist paints clues to his storytelling via color, posture, pose and intentional inscriptions etched into the impasto layers of his canvases. From “An acquired comfort” in “Conviction” to “Delam barat tang shode” (translated “I miss you”) in “Desire”- the artist invites us to read into his love to paint and his compulsion to paint about love. In the end, they are all “Sentiments” in which we find the “Liberation” to love.
Inspiration is the impetus for any work of art. What compels an artist to create is one of the great mysteries of human existence.
It is no secret that contemporary painter Henry Asencio is captivated by the transcendental beauty of women. The powerful force of female beauty has been depicted in art throughout the ages. For Asencio, it is his quest to portray something so profound that he feels compelled to paint it over and over again.
Beyond the physical, Asencio yearns to capture the essence of his female subjects. The artist states, “The combination of resilience and sensuality in a woman has been my muse for as long as I can remember. Women hold themselves with such graceful splendor. They possess this uncommon strength to ascend above the chaos. In times of weakness, when men turn to violence, they hover above us and soften our lives with their embrace.”
Asencio’s “Recognition” is a sensual yet powerful composition wrought with references to ascension and its ensuing redemption. Sitting peacefully, her head is tilted back as if commanding the heavens. With one hand at her heart and the other outstretched and open as if to gesture “come with me”, she recognizes the power of her spirit and its ability to transform. Asencio’s flawless figures are often placed amidst a flurry of painted abstraction, thereby illustrating her power to “ascend from the chaos”.
Asencio concludes: “It is with much gratitude that I come to realize the uncommon strength in women and how they continually inspire me and the world by simply recognizing the beauty within themselves.”
Contemporary painter Henry Asencio continues his legacy as a master in the art of delicate figure studies. Asencio’s works possess a refined sophistication as a result of the fine balance between visual accuracy, an accomplished abstract painting technique and his execution of artistic insight. It is this unique synthesis that continues to fascinate fine art collectors, critics and aficionados alike. “Afternoon Light” is a simple yet convincing composition that remains true to Asencio’s hallmark of portraying sensual mystery and visual beauty. Delicately poised and hidden beneath a veil of her crimson hair, Asencio’s muse is gently revealed and quietly reserved. The artist is loyal to his pursuit of portraying the natural beauty of his subjects. He eloquently communicates his artistic intentions through the use of minimal color, light and shadow. The figure’s intrinsic beauty emanates with a subtle elegance born of Asencio’s masterful use of the afternoon light to create the style and mood for this painting. A simplified palette of shades of azure and crimson serves to fuse the figure into the background, thereby adding an illusionary quality somehow necessary to sustain the figure’s anonymity. These subtle tonalities create an ambiance of quiet reservation and ultimately, an exquisite sensory experience when viewing this beautiful work of art.

The work of contemporary painter Henry Asencio has the ability to capture and captivate at the same time — his viewers, his subjects, and himself as well. This captivation is not only about visual beauty, but it is equally profound in spirit and emotion. Asencio claims to be spiritually moved by the mere execution of his paintings, each work of art becoming an epiphany of thought and idea. “Dawn” is just such a work of art. Loosely etched into the background of the painting the artist writes, “Relish in the dawn of the past.” Perhaps Asencio is referring to a sudden understanding of past events or the enlightenment that comes with growth through past experiences or maybe just referring to new beginnings. At its inception, Asencio claims he had no intellectual interpretation for this image, he was merely fascinated by the pure beauty of this pose. Capturing a glimpse of a woman in the midst of the dawn of a new day he encapsulates simple serenity with color and light. Using white to symbolize purity and renewal, his palette is simple yet profound. Compositionally, the anonymity of the figure lends power to a universal message. Whatever its underlying meaning, if any, the essence of “Dawn” is pure beauty and simplicity, which is captivating in and of itself.

"Baby Beach" bronze Sea Turtle vessel. Shows sea turtle hatchlings escaping their nest and dating for the safety of the ocean. One baby caught his own wave...
Henry Asencio’s masterful interplay of composition and soulful insight serves his art like words to poem. The artist is inspired not so much by what he sees but how he sees it. His paint and brush are but a conduit to a deeper meaning and higher level of consciousness. His resulting visual poetry continues to captivate and command our attention. In his work titled, Inspiration, Asencio’s muse is posed with her back facing the viewer. Her arms stretch overhead as if liberated somehow. Seemingly, she gently turns her head to look back at that which is left behind. Figuratively, Asencio paints a statement of redemption and hope: freeing ourselves of regrets, forgiving our failures and rejoicing in our triumphs. And ultimately, accepting the past as the foundation for our future. It has been said, “Make a present of the past and give something to the future.” Be inspired by Asencio’s Inspiration and paint your own future with beautiful, sensual colors of redemption, acceptance and hope.
Asencio’s work is recognized for its sensually simple compositions, mastery of abstract color application and exquisite figurative rendering. A champion of the “less is more” approach, he is an artist that possesses the rare talent of making the seemingly austere, magnificent. Though far from a minimalist, Asencio’s work is quite complex. One can surmise profound narratives in his work via his subjects’ body language, color selection, technique and artistic innuendo. Glory is a refined and sincere statement about the grandeur of simplicity. In this work he embraces mere existence in all its wonder and majesty. Symbolic in stance, the figure is poised in a seated fetal position like an asana dedicated to the purification of mind, body and spirit. She cradles her body in her arms and bows her head as if holding on to an inner sanctum, revering the divine beauty and glory within herself. Copper and blue surround the figure like a fine patina, as if aging with an artistic perfection found only in nature. Glory is a simple image with a simple message about the splendor of being alive. A glorious place to rejuvenate the spirit and find rest for soul.
A beautifully executed drawing has the power to convey an artist’s talent in the most pure and obvious way. Using only a single tool and the movement of the artist’s hand, line and form converge to bring a unique vision into focus. The most elementary of art forms, a drawing is the basis for most master works of art, yet can become a work of art in and of itself. Contemporary painter, Henry Asencio’s series of charcoal studies serve to prove this notion. These drawings are more than the essence of a painting, they are equally simple and complex works of art. Masterfully executed, Asencio’s loose, abstract painting technique is apparent in his drawings. Even in the absence of the explosive color in his paintings these works remain impulsive and dynamic. In spite of a flurry of lines that suggest movement, Asencio is ironically able to capture the sensual stillness signature in all of his compositions. Simple in color, yet complex in his use of light and shadow his drawings possess rich dimension and powerful sensuality. Asencio’s soft, heavily shaded modeling of figure and form is reminiscent of master draftsman Leonardo DiVinci’s “Sfumato” technique. A technique utilizing the blurred outline and mellowed colors of a composition to allow one form to merge with another while artistically striving to leave something to the imagination. And ultimately, it is the imagination of artist and viewer that has the power to transform seemingly simple lines into a work of art. Henry Asencio’s drawings are a testament not only to the artist’s talent but the underlying intrigue of his entire body of work.
